A Day of Island Escapades

Today was all about embracing the coastal charm of Hinchinbrook Island. After a week of settling into the rhythm of solo travel here, I was eager to explore some of the smaller islands nearby and soak in the unique atmosphere each had to offer. It turned out to be a day filled with stunning views, tranquil moments, and a deeper appreciation for the natural beauty of this region.

The day began with a hearty breakfast at the Hotel Hinchinbrook. It's always nice to start the day with a good meal, especially when you know you'll be spending most of it outdoors. Fuelled up, I set off to explore Haycock Island.

Haycock Island is a short boat ride from the mainland, and as we approached, its unique shape immediately caught my eye. I learned that it's sometimes nicknamed the 'Scout's Hat' because of its resemblance to an oversized scout hat. The island is a protected national park, and it’s easy to see why. The landscape is dramatic, with steep, rocky cliffs rising from the turquoise waters. I spent a couple of hours hiking around the island, taking in the panoramic views of the Great Barrier Reef. The trails were well-maintained, and I even spotted a few wallabies along the way. The island is also a nesting haven for Bridled Terns, which was pretty cool to see.

Sometimes, the most rewarding journeys are those that lead us to discover the hidden corners of our planet, revealing the untouched beauty that lies just beyond the horizon.

Next on the agenda was Agnes Island, another gem in the Hinchinbrook region.

Agnes Island is a small island a few hundred metres east of Hinchinbrook Island. At low tide, it can be accessed from nearby Banksia Bay. The island is only 13 hectares in size. To the west of Agnes Island is an open, 3 km wide, north facing bay. It contains four beaches, all bordered by prominent headlands and backed by steeply rising, densely vegetated slopes, with the 1000 m high peak called The Thumb just 2 km to the west of the main beach. There is no development and no vehicle access to any of the beaches. Beach 816 lies immediately in lee of Agnes Island and at low tide connects the island to the mainland.

Before heading back to the mainland, I made a stop at That Gypsy House, a local shop known for its unique crafts and souvenirs.

I picked up a small, hand-painted didgeridoo as a memento of my time here. It's these little things that help me remember the essence of a place.

For lunch, I grabbed a bite at Cardwell @ the Beach (Lyndock Motel & Bottlemart).

I enjoyed some fish and chips while overlooking the ocean. It was simple, but delicious, and the view was unbeatable.

As the sun began to set, I found myself at Hinchinbrook Lookout.

I had heard great things about this spot, and it did not disappoint. The panoramic views of the island and the surrounding coastline were breathtaking. I savored the moment, reflecting on the day's adventures and the incredible experiences I've had so far on this solo journey.

Dinner at the Hinchinbrook Lookout was a treat. The restaurant had a relaxed atmosphere, and I enjoyed a delicious meal of grilled barramundi, a local favorite. The service was friendly, and I even struck up a conversation with a couple of fellow travelers who were equally captivated by the island's beauty.

As I sit here writing this, I can't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to explore such a remarkable place. Hinchinbrook Island has a way of captivating you with its raw, untamed beauty. It's a place where you can disconnect from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and reconnect with nature, and with yourself.

Tomorrow, I'm planning to visit Eva Island and Brook Islands National Park. I've heard that Eva Island is a hidden gem with pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters. Brook Islands National Park, on the other hand, is known for its diverse wildlife and lush rainforests. I'm excited to see what adventures await me as I continue to explore this incredible corner of the world. I might grab breakfast at Lucinda Point Hotel Motel before heading out and perhaps end the day with a drink at the Original North Australian Bar & Grill.

I’m also mindful of the essentials I forgot – insect repellent and a waterproof jacket. Hopefully, I can find some in town before heading out again. It's little things like that that can make a big difference when you're out in the wilderness.

For those planning a trip to Hinchinbrook Island, I highly recommend taking the time to explore the surrounding islands. Each one has its own unique charm and offers a different perspective on the region's natural beauty. Whether you're into hiking, snorkeling, or simply soaking up the sun, there's something for everyone here. Just remember to pack your sense of adventure and be prepared to be amazed. I can’t wait to share more stories as my journey unfolds.

Also, I'm trying to keep sustainability in mind throughout my trip. I always make sure to carry a reusable water bottle and avoid single-use plastics whenever possible. It's important to respect the environment and leave as little impact as possible on these beautiful natural landscapes.
