A Day of Discovery
Today was all about embracing the diverse beauty of the Hinchinbrook region, from scenic lookouts offering breathtaking views to the thrill of exploring the island's wilder side. It's days like these that remind me why I traded my Berlin apartment for a tent and a trail map.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Hotel Hinchinbrook in Ingham. I fueled up with some bacon and eggs, ready for another day of exploration. The hotel had a rustic charm, filled with stories of travelers past. It's been a landmark since 1925, and I could feel the history in its walls.
After breakfast, I decided to check out the Cardwell Op Shop. I always enjoy browsing local shops, and this one was a gem. It's run by volunteers and supports the local community. I arrived around 10 am, and the shop was bustling with locals and tourists alike. I managed to snag a vintage postcard of Hinchinbrook Island for Lena – she loves collecting them. It was a nice little find, and I felt good supporting a local cause.
Next on the agenda was McClellands Lookout. The drive there was stunning, with winding roads offering glimpses of the coastline. McClellands Lookout is located in the Mount Spec section of Paluma Range National Park. The lookout commemorates the overseer who built the Paluma Road and the Little Crystal Creek Bridge during the 1930s. The short walk to the lookout was easy, even with my hiking boots, and the view was absolutely worth it.

From the lookout, I could see Halifax Bay and the Palm Islands spread out before me. The weather was perfect, with clear skies and a gentle breeze. I spent a good hour there, soaking in the scenery and snapping photos. It’s incredible how a view can just wash away any stress. I read that the lookout is open 24 hours a day, but access might be restricted during wet weather. Given the stunning views, it’s no wonder it’s a popular picnic spot.
Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found not in conquering mountains, but in simply pausing to appreciate the view.
For lunch, I headed to the Marine Hotel in Cardwell. The bistro there is known for its fresh seafood, and I was eager to try it. I settled on some locally caught fish. It was delicious, and the view of the water from the verandah was a bonus. The Marine Hotel has quite the history, being one of the first licensed establishments in Queensland. Apparently, they also have a pizza menu and offer Indian curries on Monday nights. I made a mental note to try the curry if I'm ever in Cardwell on a Monday.
After lunch, it was time for some adventure with Wild Hinchinbrook Adventures. I had booked a scenic cruise through the Hinchinbrook Channel. The cruise was fantastic, offering a different perspective of the island. The guide was knowledgeable, sharing stories about the local wildlife and the island's history. I learned that they also offer guided fishing charters and waterfall walks.

As the day wound down, I made my way to Lucinda Cove Resort for dinner. The resort is lovely, with a relaxed atmosphere and a menu featuring local produce. I enjoyed a delicious seafood meal while watching the sunset over the water. I checked the menu, and they also have options for lunch, seniors, and a bar menu.

The weather today was quite pleasant. October in Hinchinbrook typically sees average temperatures ranging from 72°F (22°C) to 82°F (28°C). There was a slight breeze, making it comfortable for hiking and exploring. The humidity was moderate, and I was glad I remembered to pack sunscreen.
Tomorrow, I’m planning to take a Hinchinbrook Island Cruise and visit the Cardwell Bush Telegraph. I’m looking forward to seeing more of the island from the water and learning about its history. I’ll also be having breakfast at Cardwell @ the Beach, lunch at Terry and Mamiko's, and dinner at Wild Local. And perhaps a drink at Lucinda Point Hotel Motel in the evening.
As I settle into my tent tonight, I’m grateful for another day of adventure on Hinchinbrook Island. It’s moments like these that make me appreciate the simple things in life – good food, stunning scenery, and the thrill of exploring the unknown.
I'm starting to feel like a local here, which is a far cry from my life as a software developer back in Berlin. While I miss Lena and the comforts of city life, I know that this solo journey is exactly what I needed. It’s a chance to reconnect with nature, challenge myself, and discover new perspectives. And who knows, maybe I'll even pick up some new coding inspiration along the way!
