Solo Adventure on Hinchinbrook Island
Day 12: Stepping Back in Time and Savoring Local Flavors in Cardwell
Exploring Cardwell's history at the Bush Telegraph, enjoying local cuisine, and soaking in the laid-back Aussie atmosphere on Hinchinbrook Island.
A Day of Discovery and Delight in Cardwell
After nearly two weeks of embracing the raw, untamed beauty of Hinchinbrook Island, today felt like a gentle re-entry into civilization. Don't get me wrong, I adore the solitude and challenge of the Thorsborne Trail, but the promise of a hot breakfast, a bit of local history, and maybe even a cold beer was too tempting to resist. Cardwell, with its charming small-town vibe, was calling my name.
The morning started early, as usual, dictated by the rising sun. After packing up my campsite, I hopped on the ferry back to the mainland. The Hinchinbrook Island Cruises operate like clockwork. Brad, the skipper, was full of useful information and also has a pretty good sense of humour, which is always welcome. As we approached Cardwell, the familiar scent of the ocean mixed with the earthy aroma of the surrounding bushland, a comforting reminder of being back in Queensland. The average temperature in Hinchinbrook Island in October typically ranges from 72°F (22°C) to 82°F (28°C), so it was already feeling like a warm day.

My first stop was Cardwell @ the Beach (Lyndock Motel & Bottlemart) for breakfast. After a week of camp-cooked meals, the promise of a hearty breakfast was too good to pass up. I settled into a table by the pool, enjoying the tropical breeze and the relaxed atmosphere. The menu was full of classic Aussie breakfast fare, and I opted for the steak and eggs, a hearty meal to fuel a day of exploring.

With a full stomach, I set off to explore Cardwell's historical heart. The Cardwell Bush Telegraph was my main target. As I approached the building, I was immediately struck by its historical presence. Built in 1870, it's one of the oldest buildings in North Queensland, a testament to the region's pioneering past.
Stepping inside the Cardwell Bush Telegraph was like stepping back in time. The building has been lovingly restored and now serves as a heritage center, showcasing Cardwell's vital role in the development of North Queensland.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found not in conquering mountains, but in uncovering the stories of those who came before us.
I spent a good couple of hours wandering through the exhibits, learning about the early settlers, the establishment of the telegraph line, and the daily lives of the people who called Cardwell home. It's amazing to think that this small town was once a major communication hub, connecting Australia to the rest of the world. The Bush Telegraph is also one of the earliest examples of prefabricated post office buildings. It's fascinating to see how communication technology has evolved over the years.
After immersing myself in history, it was time for lunch. I headed over to Terry and Mamiko's, a local eatery known for its fusion of Australian and Japanese cuisines. The reviews online raved about their fried fish and hamburgers, so I had to give it a try. Terry and Mamiko's has a comfortable atmosphere and friendly staff. I opted for the fish and chips, and I wasn't disappointed. The fish was fresh and perfectly cooked, the chips were crispy, and the tartare sauce was homemade. It was the perfect fuel for the afternoon.

With the afternoon sun mellowing, I decided to embrace the laid-back Aussie spirit and find a spot for a cold beer. I made my way to Lucinda Point Hotel Motel, a classic Aussie pub located in the sleepy town of Lucinda. The pub has a great atmosphere, with locals and tourists alike enjoying a relaxed afternoon. I grabbed a cold one and settled into a table on the veranda, soaking in the views of the Hinchinbrook Channel. The air was filled with the sounds of laughter and conversation, a welcome change from the solitude of the past few days.

As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the landscape, I made my way back to Cardwell for dinner. I decided to try Wild Local, a restaurant that specializes in local seafood. The menu was full of tempting options, from fresh prawns to grilled fish. I opted for the barramundi, a local favorite, and it was cooked to perfection. The flavors were fresh and vibrant, a true taste of North Queensland.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much I enjoyed experiencing a different side of the region. Hinchinbrook Island is undoubtedly a natural wonderland, but Cardwell offered a glimpse into the human history and culture that shaped this part of the world. It was a reminder that travel is not just about seeing stunning landscapes, but also about connecting with the people and stories that make a place unique.
Tomorrow, I'm planning to explore more of the mainland, including Attie Creek Falls and Borello Park [If tomorrow is the last day of trip, merge in “Trip end”]. I'm also hoping to pick up some insect repellent and a waterproof jacket, two essentials that I regrettably forgot to pack [If tomorrow is the last day of trip, merge in “Trip end”]. With a bit of luck, the weather will cooperate, and I'll have another day of adventure in this beautiful corner of Australia. I am looking forward to Attie Creek Falls [If tomorrow is the last day of trip, merge in “Trip end”].
