Kasbah and Vistas: A Day in Chefchaouen
Today was all about soaking in Chefchaouen's rich history and breathtaking views. Lena and I, along with our friends, ventured into the heart of the blue city to explore its ancient fortress and find the perfect spots to capture its beauty from above. It was a day of exploration, good food, and even better company.
Our morning started with a hearty Moroccan breakfast at Restaurant Lalla Messaouda. The aroma of freshly baked bread and mint tea filled the air as we settled into our seats. I decided on the Moroccan lamb, while Lena opted for the moroccan chicken. The food was delicious, and the service was warm and welcoming. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring.
With our stomachs full and spirits high, we made our way to the Kasbah. Built in the 15th century, the Kasbah once served as a stronghold against Portuguese invasions and later as a residence for governors. As we stepped through the imposing gateway, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the history contained within these walls. The Kasbah’s red-clay walls provided a striking contrast to the blue hues of the surrounding medina. We explored the tranquil gardens, a peaceful oasis amidst the bustling city. The architecture, a blend of Andalusian and Moroccan styles, was fascinating.

The Kasbah is more than just a historical site; it's a journey through time, offering a glimpse into the soul of Chefchaouen.
Inside the Kasbah, we visited the Ethnographic Museum. The museum offered an interesting display of cultural and artistic objects―dresses, musical instruments and weapons―that paint a picture of the history of Chefchaouen and Northern Morocco. Lena, with her architect's eye, was particularly interested in the design and construction of the building itself. I was fascinated by the exhibits showcasing traditional Rif weaponry.
After immersing ourselves in history, it was time to seek out the famed viewpoints of Chefchaouen. We began our ascent, winding through the narrow, blue-washed streets of the medina. Every corner seemed to offer a photo opportunity, with vibrant colors and intricate details vying for our attention. The walk itself was an experience, a chance to get lost in the labyrinthine alleys and soak in the unique atmosphere of the town.

We finally reached a spot that offered a panoramic vista of the entire city. From above, Chefchaouen looked like a sea of blue, a mesmerizing sight that stretched as far as the eye could see. The surrounding Rif Mountains provided a stunning backdrop, their rugged peaks adding to the drama of the scene. I snapped countless photos, trying to capture the magic of the moment.
For lunch, we decided to try Chez Foad, a local restaurant known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine. We shared a delicious tagine, savoring the rich flavors and spices. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the owner made us feel like we were dining in his own home. It was a welcome respite after our morning of exploration.

As the afternoon wore on, we sought a different kind of viewpoint – one with a refreshing drink in hand. We headed to Bar Oum Rabie, rumored to be one of the few places in Chefchaouen that serves alcohol. It was indeed true! We settled into a cozy corner, ordered some drinks, and relaxed. The bar had a lively atmosphere, with locals and tourists mingling and chatting. It was a great place to unwind and reflect on our day.

Before heading back to Hotel Casa Miguel, we enjoyed dinner at Restaurant Blue Dream. The restaurant was cozy, and the service was friendly. I ordered the shrimp tagine, while Lena tried the vegetable couscous. Both dishes were delicious, a perfect end to a day filled with exploration and discovery.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Bab El Ain and Place El Haouta, continuing our exploration of this enchanting blue city. Perhaps we'll even find some treasures at Bazar Sahara. I'm also hoping the weather holds up; I still regret not packing a raincoat! And maybe I can find a power bank in one of the local shops; my phone battery is always running low with all the photos I've been taking.
As I sit here writing this, I can't help but feel grateful for the experiences we've had today. Chefchaouen has captured my heart with its beauty, history, and warm hospitality. It's a place that I'll never forget, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
Travel is not about the destination, but the journey and the memories we create along the way.
