A Day of High Altitude Wonders

Today was nothing short of spectacular, a true testament to the otherworldly beauty of the Atacama Desert. I've always been drawn to unique landscapes, and today’s journey with my friends was an immersion into some of the most surreal scenery I’ve ever witnessed. From the shimmering turquoise of Laguna Verde to the hidden salt pools of Baltinache, every moment felt like stepping onto another planet. It’s days like these that remind me why I love to travel, explore, and share these experiences.

The day started with a hearty breakfast at Las Delicias de Carmen. I had heard great things about this place, and it certainly lived up to its reputation. The restaurant was bustling with locals, always a good sign. I decided to try the *pastel de choclo*, a traditional Chilean dish, which was delicious. It’s always a pleasure to start the day with authentic flavors.

After breakfast, we set off towards Laguna Verde. The drive itself was an adventure, the landscape transforming from rugged desert terrain to stunning vistas of the Andes. The anticipation built with every kilometer, and when we finally arrived, the view was breathtaking. Laguna Verde shimmered under the clear sky, its turquoise waters reflecting the majestic Licancabur Volcano. The air was crisp and thin, a reminder of the altitude, but the view was worth every gasp.

Sometimes, the most incredible experiences are found in the most unexpected places.

We spent a good hour simply taking in the scenery, snapping photos, and marveling at the sheer beauty of nature. I couldn’t help but reflect on how different this landscape was from my home in Potsdam. The stark contrast made the experience all the more profound. I thought about Mateo, my son, and how he would have loved running around, exploring the shores of the lagoon. I made a mental note to bring him here someday.

Next on our itinerary was the Lagunas Escondidas de Baltinache, a cluster of hidden salt lagoons. The drive there was equally stunning, the landscape dotted with unique rock formations and endless stretches of desert. When we arrived, the lagoons were a welcome sight, shimmering like mirages in the distance. These lagoons are known for their high salt concentration, which makes swimming an incredibly buoyant experience. Of course, we had to take a dip!

Floating in those salty waters was an experience I’ll never forget. It felt surreal, almost like being in zero gravity. The contrast between the cool water and the warm desert air was invigorating. We laughed, splashed, and simply enjoyed the unique sensation of effortlessly floating in the middle of the desert. I was glad I hadn't forgotten my hiking boots, as the terrain around the lagoons was perfect for a bit of exploring.

After our swim, we had a late lunch at Paso Del Inca. The food was simple but satisfying, and the atmosphere was relaxed. It was the perfect spot to recharge after our aquatic adventure. I enjoyed chatting with my friends, sharing stories and laughter as we savored our meal. These are the moments I cherish most when traveling – the shared experiences that create lasting memories.

In the late afternoon, we headed back to San Pedro de Atacama, but not before stopping at Atacama Craft. I wanted to pick up a few souvenirs, something to remind me of this incredible day. I found some beautiful copper jewelry made by a local artisan. It’s always special to support local businesses and take home a piece of the culture.

As the sun began to set, we decided to unwind at a local bar. San Pedro de Atacama has a laid-back vibe, and it was the perfect place to relax after a day of adventure. We sipped on local beers, listened to music, and watched as the sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant colors. It was the perfect end to a perfect day.

For dinner, we chose Restaurant Ckausama, known for its traditional Andean cuisine. I decided to try the llama steak, a local delicacy. It was flavorful and tender, a true taste of the region. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and the service was excellent. It was a wonderful way to cap off our culinary journey for the day.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Meteorite Museum and the Reserva Nacional de Fauna Andina Eduardo Avora. I'm excited to see what other wonders the Atacama Desert has in store for us. I'm particularly intrigued by the Meteorite Museum, as I've always been fascinated by astronomy. And, of course, I’m looking forward to trying out Estrella Negra for breakfast – I’ve heard their coffee is excellent.

Before heading back to the hotel, I took a moment to reflect on the day. The Atacama Desert is a place of stark contrasts and breathtaking beauty. It’s a place that challenges you, inspires you, and leaves you in awe of the natural world. Back at the Diego de Almagro Hotel, I felt a sense of contentment. Traveling with friends, exploring new places, and immersing myself in different cultures – this is what life is all about.
