Echoes of the Past, Whispers of the Wild

Today was a day of contrasts, a journey through time and the raw, untamed beauty of Iceland's Westfjords. From challenging hikes to poignant historical sites, and delightful culinary experiences, it was a day that resonated deeply with the soul. I felt a profound connection to this land, its history, and its people. It’s days like these that remind me why I started this blog – to share these immersive experiences and inspire others to seek out their own adventures.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Café Riis Hólmavík. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong coffee filled the air. Klara and Mateo were particularly excited about the pastries, and I couldn't resist trying the local Skyr cake. It was the perfect way to fuel up for our first adventure: a hike to Drangaskörð.

The drive to the trailhead was stunning. The landscape was a patchwork of vibrant green meadows, dotted with wildflowers, against a backdrop of imposing mountains. Even Mateo, usually engrossed in his games, was captivated by the scenery. As we drove, I couldn't help but reflect on how different this was from our life in Potsdam. The constant hum of technology replaced by the sounds of nature, the endless digital distractions replaced by the simple joy of being present in the moment.

Reaching the trailhead, we prepared for what I knew would be a challenging hike. Drangaskörð, with its seven rocky peaks jutting out into the sea, is a sight to behold. The trail, as I had researched, was indeed rough and demanding. Mateo, ever the trooper, insisted on leading the way, his little legs pumping with determination. Klara and I followed, marveling at his resilience. It’s moments like these that make me so proud to be his father.

The hike was strenuous, but the views were more than worth the effort. From the higher vantage points, we could see the vast expanse of the ocean, the rugged coastline stretching out in both directions, and the dramatic peaks of Drangaskörð piercing the sky. I tried to capture the panoramic beauty with my camera, but no photograph could truly do it justice. You have to experience it to believe it.

The best view comes after the hardest climb.

After a well-deserved rest at the summit, we began our descent. The way down was just as challenging, but we took our time, enjoying the scenery and each other’s company. Back at the car, we were tired but exhilarated, our bodies aching but our spirits soaring.

Our next destination was Djúpavík, a small village with a big history. As we drove along road #643, the views were simply breathtaking. This scenic route through the Árneshreppur municipality offered a continuous feast for the eyes, with every turn revealing a new vista of stunning landscapes and charming settlements. Djúpavík itself has a haunting beauty. The village is dominated by the ruins of a massive herring factory, a relic of a bygone era. In 1934, this factory was the largest concrete building in Iceland.

We explored the factory, imagining what life must have been like when it was a bustling hub of activity. The air was thick with the echoes of the past, the stories of the men and women who had worked there, their hopes and dreams, their triumphs and struggles. It was a poignant reminder of the cyclical nature of life, the rise and fall of industries, and the enduring power of the human spirit.

Mateo was fascinated by the machinery, asking endless questions about how it all worked. I did my best to explain, drawing on my limited knowledge of engineering and history. Klara, with her architect's eye, was captivated by the structure of the building, its imposing presence against the backdrop of the fjord.

After our exploration of Djúpavík, we drove to Hólmavík, where we had a late lunch at Restaurant Galdur. Located at the entrance of the Museum of Icelandic Sorcery and Witchcraft, the restaurant had a unique charm. We were all ravenous, and the food was a welcome treat. Klara and I opted for the seafood soup, which was rich and flavorful, while Mateo devoured a plate of fish and chips. As we ate, we discussed the day's adventures, sharing our favorite moments and impressions. I made a mental note to check out the Museum of Icelandic Sorcery and Witchcraft. Perhaps we can visit tomorrow.

Before dinner, Klara suggested we visit Falda - Hannyrða- og skartgripaverslun. I’ll admit, I wasn’t initially thrilled. I’m not much of a shopper, but Klara’s enthusiasm was infectious. Falda turned out to be a delightful surprise. The shop was a treasure trove of handmade textiles, intricate jewelry, and quality knitting supplies. Klara was in her element, browsing through the various items and chatting with the owner about Icelandic crafting techniques. Mateo, surprisingly, was also engaged, fascinated by the colorful yarns and the intricate patterns of the knitwear.

I found myself drawn to a display of handcrafted silver jewelry, each piece reflecting the natural beauty of Iceland. I ended up buying a small pendant for Klara, a token of our journey together. It’s these small moments, these unexpected discoveries, that make traveling so rewarding.

For dinner, we decided to try Húsið, a restaurant recommended by a local we met at Falda. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, and the menu featured a range of traditional Icelandic dishes. Klara and I shared a plate of lamb, cooked to perfection, while Mateo opted for a burger. The food was delicious, and the service was warm and friendly. It was the perfect way to end our day.

As I sit here now, writing this blog post, I feel a deep sense of gratitude for the experiences we shared today. From the challenging hike to Drangaskörð to the poignant history of Djúpavík and the delightful culinary discoveries in Hólmavík, it was a day that touched all the senses and stirred the soul. I’m also grateful for the reminder of what’s truly important in life: family, connection, and the simple joy of being present in the moment.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Möngufoss (Hlíðarhús). I'm excited to see what new adventures await us. For now, though, it’s time to rest and recharge, ready for another day of exploration in this magical land.

As I drift off to sleep, I can still hear the echoes of the past and the whispers of the wild, a symphony of sounds that will stay with me long after we leave this place. I am filled with anticipation for what tomorrow will bring. I wonder what stories this land will tell us next.

This trip has been a wonderful opportunity to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with each other. I’ve noticed Mateo is spending less time asking for screen time and more time asking questions about the world around him. Klara seems more relaxed and inspired. As for me, I feel a renewed sense of purpose and gratitude. Perhaps this is what travel is all about: not just seeing new places, but also seeing ourselves and our loved ones in a new light.

And as I reflect on the day, I realize that the true beauty of Iceland lies not just in its stunning landscapes, but also in its rich history, its vibrant culture, and its warm and welcoming people. It’s a place that challenges you, inspires you, and changes you in ways you never thought possible. I am already looking forward to the next adventure.

As the sun sets over the fjord, casting a golden glow on the landscape, I raise a glass to Iceland, to family, and to the endless possibilities that lie ahead.
