A Day of Coastal Wonders

Our day began in the cozy confines of Pizzaria Vicentina Lda in Aljezur. This wasn't just any breakfast; it was a chance to fuel up for a day of hiking with some local flavors. I opted for a strong café con leche and a slice of their homemade bolo de arroz, a traditional Portuguese rice cake. Mateo, of course, went straight for the chocolate croissant, while Klara enjoyed a simple but satisfying toast with local jam. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, setting a positive tone for the day ahead.

After breakfast, we set off for Pedra das Gaivotas, a stunning rock formation along the coast. The drive itself was picturesque, with rolling hills and glimpses of the ocean. We spent a good hour exploring the area, taking photos, and simply soaking in the serene atmosphere. Mateo was particularly fascinated by the seagulls circling above, trying to imitate their calls and running around the rocks. I made sure to keep a close eye on him, as the cliffs were quite steep, but his energy and enthusiasm were infectious. Klara, ever the architect, admired the natural architecture of the rock formations, pointing out the unique geological features and how the ocean breeze kept things comfortable. The May weather in Costa Vicentina is perfect for this, with temperatures ranging from 16°C to 22°C.

We started from Odeceixe, and the trail immediately impressed us with its stunning views. The path wound along the cliffs, offering panoramic vistas of the Atlantic Ocean. Wildflowers were in full bloom, adding splashes of color to the already vibrant landscape.

The hike was moderately challenging, with some steep inclines and sandy paths, but it was well worth the effort. Mateo, surprisingly, kept up with us, his little legs working tirelessly. We took several breaks along the way, stopping at scenic viewpoints to catch our breath and take in the beauty around us. During one of these breaks, I remembered I had forgotten to pack our travel guidebook, but thankfully, I had downloaded some offline maps on my phone, a habit I've developed from my app development days.

As we hiked, we encountered other travelers, each with their own story and reason for being on the trail. We chatted with a couple from France who were walking the entire Rota Vicentina, and they shared some tips about the upcoming stages. It’s always inspiring to meet people who are so passionate about exploring the world.

By lunchtime, we had worked up quite an appetite. We made our way to Altinho - Tapas e Petiscos in Odeceixe, a charming restaurant known for its delicious small plates. We ordered a selection of tapas, including the traditional pimientos de Padrón, gambas al ajillo, and some local cheese with quince paste. Mateo, surprisingly adventurous, even tried a bit of the octopus salad and declared it delicious. Klara and I shared a bottle of vinho verde, a light and refreshing Portuguese wine that perfectly complemented the meal.

The afternoon was dedicated to continuing our hike, and the coastal scenery just kept getting better. We passed by secluded beaches, hidden coves, and dramatic rock formations. At one point, we even spotted a group of surfers riding the waves. The trail was well-marked, but there were a few sections where we had to navigate carefully, especially along the cliff edges. I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with my family, creating memories that we would cherish for years to come.

As the sun began to set, we reached Zambujeira do Mar, our final destination for the day. We checked into our eco-friendly accommodation, a cozy guesthouse with stunning views of the ocean. After a quick shower, we headed to Restaurante Sol Dourado for dinner, recommended for its fresh seafood and traditional Portuguese dishes.

The restaurant was bustling with activity, but we managed to snag a table on the terrace. We ordered a seafood platter, which included grilled fish, prawns, mussels, and clams. Mateo, tired from the day's adventures, fell asleep in his chair, a testament to the exhausting but fulfilling day we had. Klara and I enjoyed a quiet moment together, watching the sunset over the ocean, a perfect ending to a perfect day.

Before heading back to our guesthouse, we decided to make a quick stop at Magic Cactus, a local bar known for its lively atmosphere and great cocktails. I ordered a gin and tonic, while Klara opted for a glass of local wine. The bar was buzzing with locals and tourists alike, all enjoying the warm evening air and the relaxed vibe of Costa Vicentina. It was a great way to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures.

Back at our accommodation, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the experiences we had today. Costa Vicentina had truly captured our hearts with its natural beauty, delicious food, and warm hospitality. As I write this, Mateo is sound asleep next to me, and Klara is reading a book on sustainable architecture, her passion always shining through. It’s moments like these that make all the hard work and planning worthwhile.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Praia da Foz dos Ouriços and Passadiços do Cabo Sardão, two more gems along this stunning coastline. I’m particularly excited about the Passadiços, as I’ve heard they offer incredible views of the cliffs and the ocean. I'm also hoping to find some unique souvenirs at Ceramica Paraiso.
