Exploring the Ancient Wonders of Matera with Friends
Day 9: Farewell, Matera: A Journey Through Time and Stone
Reflecting on my final day in Matera, exploring ancient caves, savoring local cuisine, and cherishing the memories made with friends.
A Fond Farewell to Matera
As our incredible journey through Matera draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the unique experiences and unforgettable moments we've shared. Today was all about soaking in the last bits of this ancient city, delving deeper into its history, and savoring its flavors one last time. It’s amazing how a place can capture your heart and leave you with memories that will last a lifetime.
The day began, as most of our days in Matera did, with a delightful breakfast at La Finestra sui Sassi - Kappador. I opted for a cappuccino and a *tetta delle monache*, a local pastry I had heard so much about. The pastry was filled with a light and creamy filling, and the cappuccino had a custom design. It was the perfect way to start our final day in this magical city. The restaurant is located in the central square of Matera and offers a view of the Sassi. Sipping my coffee, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for this experience. I was with friends, and the weather was wonderful.

After breakfast, we set out to explore the Cave di Matera, a network of ancient cave dwellings that offer a glimpse into the city's past. Wandering through these caves, I was struck by the ingenuity and resilience of the people who once called them home. It's hard to imagine living without electricity or running water, yet these caves were home to families for centuries. The caves were inhabited until 1952 and lacked electricity and running water.

Matera is more than just a city; it's a living testament to human history and adaptation, a place where the past and present intertwine to create an unforgettable experience.
Next on our itinerary was Casa Cisterna, a traditional cave dwelling that showcases the ingenious water collection system used by the inhabitants of the Sassi. The *casa* has three underground environments and an old mill. The guide explained how rainwater was collected and stored in cisterns beneath the houses, providing a vital water source for the community. It was fascinating to learn about the intricate system of channels and wells that sustained life in this unique environment.

For lunch, we decided to try Osteria al Casale, a charming Italian eatery known for its authentic local cuisine. The restaurant is in the heart of Matera and offers local cuisine at reasonable prices. The cave-like interior design transported us back in time. I ordered *fave e cicorie*, a traditional Materan dish of mashed fava beans and chicory. The meal was simple but delicious, a true taste of Basilicata. The staff was friendly, and there was outdoor seating.

In the late afternoon, we took some time to revisit our favorite spots in the Sassi, taking photos and soaking in the atmosphere. We wandered through the narrow streets, admiring the ancient architecture and the stunning views. I picked up a few souvenirs for Isabella and Sofia, a reminder of this incredible trip. I know Sofia will love the little Sassi house figurine I found. It reminds me a bit of our home in Toronto, a place where we've built our own little world, filled with love and laughter.
As the sun began to set, we made our way to San Biagio Ristorante - Matera centro sassi for our final dinner in Matera. The restaurant offers a stunning view and professional service. The cuisine is wonderful, and the prices are honest. The restaurant is located in a cave in the Sassi. I savored every bite of my meal, reflecting on the memories we'd made during our time in Matera. We enjoyed the local dishes and excellent service. The quality of the food was excellent.

After dinner, we decided to check out 1806 Cocktail bar for a nightcap. The bar is in the historic center of Matera and offers a wide range of cocktails. The staff is young and prepared, and the atmosphere is great. Mirko and Marianna have created a place where everyone feels at home. I tried a local cocktail recommended by the bartender, a unique blend of flavors that perfectly captured the spirit of Matera. The bar is a great place to socialize with locals and tourists.

As I sit here now, writing this final blog post from our hotel, Sant Angelo Matera, I can't help but feel a sense of melancholy. This trip has been an incredible experience, a journey through time and stone that has left me with a deep appreciation for the history and culture of Matera. Tomorrow, we begin our journey back home to Toronto. I know I'll be bringing a piece of Matera with me, a reminder of the beauty and resilience of the human spirit. I'm already looking forward to sharing my stories and photos with Isabella and Sofia, inspiring them to explore the world and embrace new experiences.
Thank you, Matera, for an unforgettable adventure. Until we meet again!
Even though the trip is over, I’m already looking forward to planning my next adventure. Maybe I’ll explore more of Italy, perhaps visit the Amalfi Coast or Tuscany. Or maybe I’ll venture further afield, to South America or Asia. The possibilities are endless! I know Isabella and Sofia will be happy to join me on my next adventure.
For now, it's time to say *arrivederci* to Matera and *hola* to new beginnings.
And with that, my friends, I bid you *addio* from Matera. Until our next adventure!
