A Day of Island Exploration

Today was a day dedicated to soaking in the local culture and history of Kangaroo Island. It’s amazing how much character and charm can be packed into a single day of exploration, especially when you’re open to the unexpected. I find that traveling solo allows me to fully immerse myself in these experiences, and today was no exception.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at The Shed in American River. This place is a local gem, and it was the perfect spot to fuel up for the day ahead. I opted for a classic Aussie breakfast – eggs, bacon, and toast – simple but satisfying. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, with friendly locals chatting and enjoying their morning coffee. It felt like a true taste of Kangaroo Island life. The Shed seems to be a popular spot, with many people praising their steaks and salads. It's a volunteer run venue that has a great atmosphere.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set off to explore the Penneshaw Maritime and Folk Museum. The museum is housed in a charming 1869 school building. It was started in 1968 by a group of dedicated local people. Inside, I discovered a treasure trove of artifacts and stories that brought the island's rich history to life. The museum has three rooms, each dedicated to a specific historic theme. I was particularly fascinated by the Maritime Room, which showcased the island's whaling and sealing heritage. The exhibits were well-curated, and I spent a good couple of hours wandering through the rooms, reading about the early settlers and the challenges they faced. It’s incredible to think about the resilience and determination of those who came before us. I was greeted by a lovely volunteer who took the time to chat and welcome me.

History is who we are and why we are the way we are.

One of the most interesting stories I learned was about Mrs. Mary Seymour, said to be the first child born in South Australia of a European father and an Aboriginal mother. Her father was a sealer from Tasmania who had an Aboriginal wife. It’s stories like these that really connect you to a place and its people. The museum also has a crushing mill in the grounds, consisting of two huge basalt stones.

After immersing myself in history, I decided to head over to Kingscote to see the Old Jetty. As I strolled along the weathered wooden beams, I couldn't help but imagine the countless ships that had docked here over the years. The jetty was the earliest built on Kangaroo Island, around 1905. It played a crucial role in the trading of eucalyptus oil and wheat. The jetty offers breathtaking coastal views, inviting visitors to step back in time. The gentle lapping of the waves created a soothing backdrop, perfect for quiet reflection. It's a popular spot for photography, and I can see why – the views are simply stunning. There was an advertising sign on the left of the jetty that said Strawbridge & Co.

Lunch was at Dragons Rest in Kingscote. I opted for some fresh seafood, a must when you're on an island. The fish was cooked to perfection, and the views of the ocean were simply unbeatable. I found Dragons Rest to be a cozy spot, and it's close to many attractions.

In the late afternoon, I ventured to Kangaroo Island Ciders for a tasting. Now, I must admit, I’m usually more of a wine guy, but I was pleasantly surprised by the variety and quality of the ciders on offer. Kangaroo Island Ciders offers a fantastic selection of ciders. The staff were incredibly friendly, and they walked me through the different flavors and production methods. I particularly enjoyed the Colony Cove Draught Cider, which had a refreshing apple flavor. The tasting paddle allowed me to sample different ciders while learning about the interesting stories behind them. I even got to pet the two resident kangaroos, which was a fun and unexpected experience. They also serve excellent food, such as Karaage Chicken Salad.

As the sun began to set, I made my way to the Kangaroo Island Lodge Bar & Lounge for dinner. The bar and lounge has a fireplace, making it an ideal place for a drink or bite to eat. I savored a delicious meal while enjoying the cozy atmosphere and reflecting on the day's adventures. It’s moments like these that make traveling so rewarding. The Kangaroo Island Lodge Bar & Lounge is open for lunch and dinner. It's a brand new bar and lounge that offers a relaxing atmosphere.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore Prospect Hill and Mt Thisby Lookout. I’m looking forward to seeing more of the island’s natural beauty and capturing some stunning views. I’ll also be stopping by Millie Mae's Pantry for breakfast, So Sando for lunch and Fire and Smoke Ki for dinner. And perhaps a spot of shopping at Thermal Theory || AUSTRALIA.

Kangaroo Island continues to surprise and delight me at every turn. It's a place where history, nature, and local culture come together to create a truly unforgettable experience. I'm so grateful to be able to explore this beautiful island and share my adventures with you all.

Safe travels,
Juan
