Echoes of Flinders Chase
Today was a day of dramatic landscapes and incredible wildlife encounters. Venturing into Flinders Chase National Park, I was immediately struck by the raw, untamed beauty that defines Kangaroo Island. It’s a place where the elements have sculpted the land into a masterpiece, and where nature reigns supreme. I was eager to experience it all, and I knew Isabella and Sofia would have loved to see this with me.

My day started with breakfast at The Deck cafe on the wharf in American River. I enjoyed a simple but satisfying meal of poached eggs and toast, fueling up for the adventures ahead. The café's location offered a serene view of the water, a perfect way to ease into the day. The fresh air and quiet atmosphere were a welcome change from the bustling city life back in Toronto. It reminded me of our favorite little brunch spot near High Park, but with a distinct Australian twist.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set off towards Flinders Chase National Park. The drive itself was scenic, with winding roads that offered glimpses of the island's diverse terrain. As I approached the park, the landscape transformed into a tapestry of dense bushland and rugged coastline. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of eucalyptus and the salty tang of the ocean.
My first stop was Admirals Arch. The walk to the arch was an experience in itself, with a well-maintained boardwalk that meandered along the cliff tops. The views were simply breathtaking. The turquoise waters of the Southern Ocean crashed against the jagged rocks below, creating a symphony of sound and motion. The wind whipped around me, carrying the cries of seabirds and the distant roar of the waves. It felt like standing on the edge of the world.

Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.
As I rounded a bend in the boardwalk, Admirals Arch came into view. It was even more impressive than I had imagined. This natural rock formation, carved by centuries of erosion, stood as a testament to the power of nature. The arch framed a picturesque cove, where a colony of New Zealand fur seals frolicked in the surf. I watched in fascination as they played, basking in the sun and diving into the cool waters. Their playful antics were a joy to behold, and I spent a good hour simply observing them.
The boardwalk descends stairs down into a bay before emerging in Admirals Arch, where viewing platforms allow you to watch the seals closer. The first 3/4 of the walk is wheelchair accessible along the wide boardwalk, before the path descends down stairs into the arch.
After bidding farewell to the seals, I decided to explore more of Flinders Chase National Park. I chose one of the shorter hiking trails, the Cape du Couedic coastline hike, a 2km loop. The trail took me along rugged cliffs, providing awe-inspiring views of the Southern Ocean. The landscape was dramatic, with towering rock formations and crashing waves. I felt a sense of solitude and peace, surrounded by the immensity of nature.
As I hiked, I kept an eye out for wildlife. Flinders Chase National Park is known for its diverse fauna, and I was hoping to spot some of the island's iconic creatures. Though I didn't see any kangaroos or koalas, I did encounter several goannas, sunning themselves on the rocks. These large lizards were fascinating to watch, their scales glistening in the sunlight.
For lunch, I stopped at So Sando in Kingscote. This sandwich shop is a local favorite, and I was eager to try their famous Cubanos. The sandwich was delicious, with homemade mojo pork, leg ham, and Swiss cheese. It was the perfect fuel for the rest of my day's adventures. The atmosphere of So Sando was also warm and welcoming, with friendly staff who made me feel right at home. It reminded me a bit of some of the little sandwich shops back in Toronto, but with a unique Kangaroo Island twist.

In the late afternoon, with the sun beginning to dip towards the horizon, I decided to visit Kangaroo Island Spirits. I had heard great things about this distillery, and I was keen to sample some of their unique creations. The distillery is known for using local and native ingredients, and I was intrigued by the prospect of tasting spirits that reflected the island's distinct character.

The tasting room was cozy and inviting, with a rustic charm that suited the island setting perfectly. I sampled several of their gins, each with its own unique flavor profile. The O Gin, crafted with native coastal daisy bush, was particularly memorable. It had a sweet and piney aroma, with a smooth, refreshing taste. I also enjoyed their Wild Gin, distilled with hand-harvested boobialla, eau-du-cologne mint, lime zest and pink peppercorns. It was a complex and intriguing spirit, with hints of citrus and spice. I ended up buying a bottle of the O Gin to take back home. I thought it would be a great conversation starter at our next dinner party with friends in Toronto.
As evening approached, I made my way to Reflections Restaurant in American River for dinner. This restaurant is known for its seasonal menu, showcasing the region's finest food and wines. The restaurant had won Trip Advisor's Travellers Choice Award in 2020 and 2021 and is known as one of the top restaurants on Kangaroo Island. The location, right on the water's edge, offered stunning views of the Eastern Cove.

I savored a delicious meal of local seafood, paired with a crisp white wine from a nearby vineyard. The flavors were fresh and vibrant, a true reflection of the island's bounty. The service was impeccable, and the atmosphere was relaxed and sophisticated. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and adventure.
As I reflect on today's experiences, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and awe. Kangaroo Island has a way of captivating the soul, of reminding us of the beauty and power of nature. It's a place where you can escape the stresses of modern life and reconnect with the wild, untamed spirit within. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow, when I plan to visit Remarkable Rocks and Kelly Hill Caves. I have a feeling that Kangaroo Island still has many more surprises in store for me.
