Oaxaca's Cultural Heartbeat

Today was a deep dive into the soul of Oaxaca. After a few days settling in, it felt like the perfect moment to truly immerse ourselves in the city's history and culture. The family was ready, and I had my camera charged, eager to capture every moment.

Our day started with a delightful breakfast at Hierba Dulce. Isabella had read rave reviews, and it certainly lived up to the hype. This charming spot offered a vegan twist on traditional Oaxacan dishes. Even Sofia, usually a picky eater, devoured her plant-based empanadas with a smile. I opted for the traditional Oaxacan breakfast and it was delicious. The atmosphere was so peaceful, a perfect way to start a busy day of exploring.

Refueled and ready, we made our way to the Centro Cultural San Pablo. Housed in a stunningly restored 16th-century Dominican monastery, the center was a treasure trove of Oaxacan culture. The architecture alone was worth the visit, with its soaring arches and intricate details whispering stories of centuries past. We wandered through the various exhibitions, each showcasing different aspects of Oaxacan life, from contemporary art to historical artifacts. Sofia was particularly fascinated by the displays of traditional textiles, vibrant colors, and intricate patterns. There were several expositions taking place, including “Ladidoo. Piel de hilo” de Natalia Toledo, “Personajes efímeros” de María Nana, Memoria artificial de Mario Cruz and “Pie de Jícara” de Carlos Zurc.

Travel is more than seeing of sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.

Next on our list was the Ex-Convento de Santo Domingo. This place is truly awe-inspiring. Construction began in 1570, and it took nearly five decades to complete! The Baroque architecture is simply breathtaking, a testament to the artistry and craftsmanship of the era. Inside, the church was lavishly decorated with gold leaf and intricate carvings, a visual feast that left us speechless. We learned about the building's history, from its time as a religious center to its later use as a military barracks. It's amazing how this building has witnessed so much of Mexico's past.

After soaking up the history and beauty of Santo Domingo, our stomachs started to rumble. It was time for lunch at Yu Ne Nisa, a restaurant known for its authentic Istmeño cuisine. This region of Oaxaca has its own distinct culinary traditions, and we were eager to experience them. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a warm, familial atmosphere. We ordered a variety of dishes to share, including the signature mole negro, a rich, complex sauce that is a staple of Oaxacan cuisine. Sofia surprised us all by trying (and enjoying!) the chapulines, or grasshoppers, a local delicacy. Isabella and I were incredibly proud of her adventurous spirit.

As the afternoon wore on, we decided to take a break from sightseeing and indulge in a little relaxation. We headed back to Hotel Camba for a siesta. After a short rest, we ventured out again, this time in search of a pre-dinner cocktail. Our destination: Selva Oaxaca Cocktail Bar. This trendy spot was buzzing with locals and tourists alike, all eager to sample their innovative concoctions. I opted for a mezcal-based cocktail, while Isabella tried something with local fruits. The drinks were delicious, the atmosphere lively, and it was the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring.

For dinner, we had a reservation at Criollo. This restaurant, known for its modern take on traditional Oaxacan cuisine, was another highlight of our culinary journey. The setting was beautiful, a charming courtyard with twinkling lights and a relaxed ambiance. We opted for the tasting menu, a culinary adventure that showcased the best of Oaxaca's local ingredients. Each dish was a work of art, both visually stunning and incredibly flavorful. The service was impeccable, and the entire experience was truly memorable.

As we sipped our final drinks, reflecting on the day's adventures, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this opportunity to share Oaxaca's beauty and culture with my family. It was a day filled with history, art, delicious food, and unforgettable moments. And the best part? We still have so much more to explore!

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Zona Arqueológica de Mitla and the Tree of Tule. I'm particularly excited about Mitla, with its unique geometric designs and ancient Zapotec history. And of course, we'll be sure to sample more of Oaxaca's culinary delights along the way. We will start the day with breakfast at El Destilado, and then have lunch in El Asador Vasco, ending the day with dinner at Gozobi Restaurante Bar. Before heading back to the hotel, we will visit Galería Fe y Lola Rugs & Textiles.

I still miss my Spanish phrasebook, it would have been a great help today. I must remember to buy one tomorrow.

Oaxaca continues to surprise and delight us at every turn. I'm so glad we decided to embark on this family adventure. Stay tuned for more tales from the heart of Mexico!
