Family Adventure in the Heart of Oaxaca
Day 5: Echoes of Ancient Civilizations: Exploring Mitla and the Tule Tree
Uncover the secrets of Mitla's archaeological site and marvel at the ancient Tule Tree on a captivating day trip from Oaxaca.
Whispers of the Past
Today was a day of venturing into the heart of Oaxaca's historical tapestry. Leaving the familiar comfort of the city, we journeyed to Mitla, a place where time seems to stand still, and then stood in awe before the colossal Tule Tree, a living monument to centuries gone by. It was a day filled with exploration, wonder, and a profound connection to the ancient civilizations that once thrived here.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at El Destilado. The aroma of Oaxacan coffee filled the air as we savored traditional dishes, fueling up for the day's adventures. I always appreciate starting the day with a good cup of coffee, a habit I picked up in Colombia and have carried with me ever since. Sofia was particularly excited about the pastries, and Isabella enjoyed a hearty breakfast of huevos rancheros. It's these small moments, sharing a meal together, that make our family trips so special.
After breakfast, we set off for Mitla, a journey of about an hour from Oaxaca. The landscape transformed as we drove, the city giving way to rolling hills and fields dotted with agave plants. The anticipation was palpable as we approached the Zona Arqueológica de Mitla. I had read so much about this ancient site, and I was eager to experience it firsthand.

Mitla, known as the Place of the Dead in Nahuatl, is a site steeped in history and mystery. Unlike the grand pyramids of Teotihuacan or Chichen Itza, Mitla is renowned for its intricate stone mosaics and unique architectural style. As we walked through the complex, I was struck by the precision and artistry of the ancient Zapotec and Mixtec civilizations. The geometric patterns adorning the walls were mesmerizing, each design telling a story of a bygone era.
Sofia was fascinated by the stories our guide shared, tales of kings, priests, and ancient rituals. She peppered him with questions, her curiosity insatiable. Isabella and I marveled at the ingenuity of the ancient builders, who constructed these structures without the aid of modern technology. The site was less crowded than other major archaeological sites we've visited, allowing us to wander at our own pace and truly soak in the atmosphere. We explored the various courtyards and chambers, each with its own unique character and purpose. The Hall of Columns was particularly impressive, its massive pillars standing as silent witnesses to centuries of history.
The past is never dead. It's not even past.
After our exploration of Mitla, we drove to El Tule to see the famous Tree of Tule. Situated in the churchyard of Santa María del Tule, this ancient Montezuma cypress is truly a sight to behold. It's claimed to have the widest trunk in the world. As we approached, its sheer size was overwhelming. The tree is so massive that it's difficult to capture its entirety in a single photograph.

The Tree of Tule is estimated to be over 1,500 years old, a living testament to the passage of time. Its gnarled trunk is filled with shapes and figures, prompting visitors to use their imagination to discern animals, faces, and mythical creatures. Sofia was particularly amused by this game, pointing out various shapes she recognized in the bark. I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and reverence in the presence of this ancient giant. It's humbling to think of all the events this tree has witnessed over the centuries, the rise and fall of civilizations, the ebb and flow of human history.
After spending a reflective time with the Tule Tree, we were ready for a late lunch. El Asador Vasco was our choice, and it proved to be an excellent one. The restaurant, known for its blend of Oaxacan, Basque, and international cuisine, offered a delightful culinary experience. I opted for a traditional Oaxacan dish, while Isabella chose a Basque specialty. Sofia, ever the adventurous eater, tried a bit of both. The meal was a satisfying end to a day filled with history and natural beauty.

Before heading back to Oaxaca City, we made a stop at Galería Fe y Lola Rugs & Textiles. I've always appreciated the artistry and craftsmanship of traditional textiles, and I was eager to see the works on display at this renowned gallery. The rugs and tapestries were stunning, each piece a unique expression of Oaxacan culture and heritage. I was particularly drawn to the vibrant colors and intricate designs, reflecting the region's rich artistic traditions. We ended up purchasing a small rug as a souvenir, a tangible reminder of our time in Oaxaca. The family-run gallery was warm and inviting, and we enjoyed learning about the weaving process and the use of natural dyes.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way back to Oaxaca City, our hearts full of memories and impressions. But before heading back to the hotel, we had dinner at Gozobi Restaurante Bar. The restaurant's rooftop terrace offered stunning views of the city, and the ambiance was perfect for a relaxed evening. We enjoyed delicious Oaxacan cuisine and refreshing drinks as we recounted the day's adventures. The food was delicious, and the service was attentive, making for a memorable dining experience.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Mercado 20 de Noviembre and Templo de Santo Domingo de Guzmán, continuing our immersion into Oaxaca's vibrant culture. I'm particularly excited to visit the market, known for its diverse array of local products and culinary delights. I'm also looking forward to seeing the Templo de Santo Domingo, a stunning example of Baroque architecture.
