Oaxaca's Quiet Charms

Today was a day of contrasts, a blend of natural beauty and historical reflection that perfectly encapsulates the spirit of Oaxaca. It was a day where we traded the bustling city streets for tranquil forests and ancient ruins, creating memories that I know my family and I will cherish for years to come. These are the days that truly enrich a travel experience, providing a deeper understanding of a place and its people.

Our day started with a delightful breakfast at La Flor de Oaxaca. I'd heard whispers about their magnificent breakfasts, and they did not disappoint! Isabella opted for the Huevos Estrellados, while Sofia, surprisingly adventurous, chose the Enchiladas Oaxaqueñas. As for me, I went all in with the cecina – Oaxacan-style pork, seasoned with a chile rub. It was a serious breakfast, and every bite was packed with flavor. The café Americano was a bit weak, but the Chocolate Caliente more than made up for it. It’s these simple, authentic experiences that make traveling so rewarding. I am always looking for a way to connect to my roots, and food is definitely one of the strongest ways I feel connected to my Colombian heritage, and in turn, allows me to feel a strong connection to the Mexican culture.

Fueled up and ready for adventure, we headed to Benito Juárez National Park. The drive itself was scenic, winding through the outskirts of Oaxaca and gradually ascending into the hills. The air grew crisper, and the landscape transformed into a lush, green haven. The park, named after the revered Mexican president, is a sprawling expanse of forests and mountains, a true escape from the urban hustle.

Sometimes, the best way to understand a place is to step away from its cities and immerse yourself in its natural surroundings.

We spent the morning hiking along one of the many trails. Sofia was particularly excited, spotting various birds and insects along the way. The park is known for its biodiversity, and it was a treat to witness it firsthand. The trails offered stunning vistas of the surrounding landscapes, perfect for capturing those postcard-worthy shots. I made sure to bring my camera, remembering the last trip when I forgot my portable phone charger, and my phone died halfway through the day. That will not happen again! Isabella, ever the nature enthusiast, pointed out various plant species, sharing interesting facts about the local flora. It was a refreshing change of pace, a chance to reconnect with nature and breathe in the fresh mountain air. I couldn't help but think of the parks back in Ontario, and how much Sofia would enjoy hiking there when we return. Maybe I’ll even try to teach her how to play Tejo, a Colombian sport, when she’s a little older.

After a morning of hiking, we made our way to La Cosecha Organic Market. It was a delightful sensory experience, with colorful displays of fresh produce, artisanal products, and traditional handicrafts. We sampled some local cheeses and handmade tortillas, each bite bursting with authentic Oaxacan flavors. Sofia was particularly fascinated by the handicrafts, admiring the intricate designs and vibrant colors. We picked up a few souvenirs, supporting local artisans and taking a piece of Oaxaca back home with us. This market reminded me of the markets back in Armenia, Colombia, where my grandmother used to take me every Sunday. The smells, the colors, the sounds – it all brought back cherished memories.

In the afternoon, we journeyed to the Ex Convento Cuilapam de Guerrero, a historical site just a short drive from Oaxaca. The ex-convent is an architectural marvel, a testament to the region's colonial past. Construction began in the 1550s by Dominican monks, but the complex was never fully completed, leaving behind an unfinished basilica with a hauntingly beautiful charm. As we walked through the roofless basilica, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and reverence. The walls were adorned with well-preserved 16th-century frescoes, a blend of Christian and indigenous iconography. It was fascinating to learn about the history of the site, which had served as a monastery, convent, school, and even a prison during its lifetime. The ex-convent also holds a significant place in Mexican history as the site where General Vicente Guerrero, Mexico's second president, was executed in 1831. Standing in that very spot, I felt a deep connection to the past, a poignant reminder of the struggles and sacrifices that shaped this nation.

For lunch, we went to Ancestral Cocina Tradicional, where we enjoyed authentic Oaxacan dishes in a charming garden setting. The twinkly lights lining the trees created a magical ambiance, and the food was simply divine. We tried the beef ceviche with grasshoppers, a local delicacy that was surprisingly delicious. The service was excellent, and the staff was friendly and attentive.

Our final stop for the day was El Escapulario for dinner. The restaurant is known for its traditional Oaxacan cuisine, and we were eager to sample some of their specialties. I opted for the mole negro, a rich and complex sauce that is a staple of Oaxacan cuisine. Isabella tried the tlayudas, a large, crispy tortilla topped with various ingredients. Sofia, still adventurous, chose the chapulines, toasted grasshoppers that are a popular snack in Oaxaca. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, and the service was impeccable. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and discovery.

As I sit here writing this, reflecting on our day, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and history of Oaxaca with my family. It's days like these that make traveling so worthwhile, creating memories that will last a lifetime. Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Centro de las Artes de San Agustín, an art center housed in a former textile mill, and the Auditorio Guelaguetza. I'm excited to immerse ourselves in the local art scene and learn more about the cultural traditions of Oaxaca. And of course, no trip to Oaxaca is complete without trying some mezcal, so we'll be stopping by Los Amantes Mezcalería for a taste of the local spirit.

Oaxaca continues to surprise and delight us at every turn. It’s a city that seamlessly blends its rich history with its vibrant present, offering a unique and unforgettable travel experience. I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings!
