Oaxacan Delights: A Day of Exploration
Today was a beautiful immersion into the heart of Oaxaca, a city that continues to enchant me and my family with its vibrant culture and rich history. From bustling markets brimming with local flavors to a stunning temple that whispers tales of centuries past, Oaxaca is truly a feast for the senses. It's days like these that make our family trips so special, creating memories that we'll cherish long after we've returned to our busy lives in Toronto.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at El Quinque. I had heard whispers about this place being a local favorite, and it certainly lived up to the hype. The restaurant had a cozy, family-run feel, the kind of place where you instantly feel welcome. I ordered huevos rancheros, a classic Mexican breakfast dish, while Isabella opted for the Oaxacan specialty, tasajo – thin-cut grilled beef – served with eggs and beans. Sofia, of course, went for the pancakes. The food was simple, honest, and incredibly satisfying. It was a great way to fuel up for a day of exploring. I was reminded of the arepas my mom used to make back in Armenia, Colombia; food has a way of transporting you back to cherished memories.

With our bellies full, we ventured into the Mercado 20 de Noviembre. What a sensory overload! The market was a kaleidoscope of colors, sounds, and smells. Aisles overflowed with fresh produce, fragrant spices, handmade crafts, and, of course, an endless array of Oaxacan delicacies. The kids were wide-eyed, especially when they spotted the chapulines (grasshoppers), a local snack. Isabella, ever the adventurous one, insisted we try them. I must admit, I was a bit hesitant, but they were surprisingly crunchy and flavorful, with a smoky, earthy taste. Sofia, however, wasn't convinced, but at least she tried! We wandered through the market, soaking in the atmosphere and sampling various treats, from mole negro to tejate, a traditional Oaxacan beverage made from cacao, corn, and flor de cacao. The market was a true reflection of Oaxacan culture, a place where you could experience the heart and soul of the city.

Oaxaca is a place where the past and present intertwine, creating a rich tapestry of culture, tradition, and flavor.
After our market adventure, we made our way to the Templo de Santo Domingo de Guzmán. This magnificent church is a true masterpiece of Baroque architecture. The sheer size and grandeur of the building were breathtaking. The facade, made of green cantera stone, was intricately carved with religious figures and symbols. As we stepped inside, we were immediately struck by the opulence of the interior. The walls and ceilings were covered in gold leaf, creating a dazzling effect. The church was founded by the Dominican Order in the 16th century, and it took over 200 years to complete. Every corner seemed to tell a story, from the elaborate family tree of Santo Domingo de Guzmán to the stunning Capilla del Rosario. Isabella, with her keen interest in history, was particularly fascinated by the church's history and significance. Sofia, on the other hand, was more interested in counting the number of angels she could spot. It was a moment that reminded me of the beautiful churches in Bogotá, Colombia, each holding centuries of history within their walls.

For lunch, we decided to try Calabacitas Tiernas, a vegetarian restaurant that had been recommended to us by a local. As someone who enjoys a good steak, I was initially skeptical, but I was pleasantly surprised. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, with colorful decor and friendly staff. We ordered a variety of dishes, including potato salad, bean soup, and tacos dorados. The food was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. Even Sofia, a self-proclaimed carnivore, enjoyed the meal. It was a testament to the diversity and creativity of Oaxacan cuisine. I even found myself thinking about how I could incorporate some of these vegetarian dishes into our meals back home in Toronto, perhaps as a way to balance out my love for Colombian empanadas.

As the afternoon drew to a close, we decided to indulge in a bit of relaxation at the Zapotec Mixology Bar. While not typically a bar-goer, I was intrigued by the promise of innovative cocktails made with local ingredients. Tucked away from the main tourist streets, the bar had a unique charm. The bartender was a true artist, crafting each cocktail with precision and passion. I opted for a mezcal-based concoction with citrus and herbs, while Isabella chose a drink made with local fruit. The drinks were both refreshing and complex, a perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring. Sofia enjoyed a non-alcoholic beverage, feeling very grown up. It reminded me of the times I would relax with aguardiente after a long day's work in Colombia, a tradition I still cherish.

For dinner, we decided to treat ourselves to a special meal at Tr3s 3istro Restaurant & Oyster Bar. Located in the heart of the city, the restaurant offered stunning views of the Zócalo. The ambiance was elegant and sophisticated, with white tablecloths and attentive service. We started with a selection of fresh oysters, which were incredibly delicious. For our main courses, Isabella and I opted for seafood dishes, while Sofia chose a pasta dish. The food was exquisite, a perfect blend of Oaxacan and international flavors. The service was impeccable, making us feel like royalty. It was a memorable end to a wonderful day.

As we strolled back to Hotel Camba, hand in hand, under the starlit Oaxacan sky, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this incredible experience. Oaxaca had captured our hearts with its vibrant culture, rich history, and delicious cuisine. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow, when we plan to explore Benito Juárez National Park and the Ex Convento Cuilapam de Guerrero. Sofia is particularly excited about the park, while Isabella is eager to delve deeper into the region's history. We might even stop by La Cosecha Organic Market to pick up some local treats. The days here are flying by, each one filled with new adventures and unforgettable moments. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.

P.S. I almost forgot to mention, there was a book reading today at the Oaxaca Lending Library. Lynda Wilde was presenting her new book, but unfortunately, we were too caught up in our adventures to attend. Perhaps next time!
I'm also realizing I forgot my portable phone charger and Spanish phrasebook! Note to self: always double-check the essentials list!
