Chasing Views and Finding Serenity

Today was all about perspective, both literally and figuratively. As a restoration technician, I often focus on the minute details, the intricate craftsmanship of historical buildings. But sometimes, it's essential to step back and appreciate the bigger picture. Today, Florence offered me that opportunity in spades.

My day began, as many have during this trip, with a visit to Caffè Gilli. It's hard not to notice them, side by side, in the heart of Florence, marking the limits of Piazza della Repubblica. I savored a cappuccino and a *sfogliatella*, watching the city slowly awaken. It’s amazing to think that this café has been around since 1733! The Swiss Gilli family opened “La Bottega Dei Pani Dolci” in Florence, and it quickly became famous among the Florentine nobles.

Fueled by caffeine and the promise of panoramic views, I made my way to Piazzale Michelangelo. The climb was invigorating, a pleasant workout before the day truly began. As I crested the hill, the city unfolded before me in all its glory. Brunelleschi's Dome pierced the sky, the Arno snaked its way through the heart of Florence, and the terracotta rooftops stretched as far as the eye could see. It was a view that took my breath away, a reminder of the beauty that humanity is capable of creating.

I spent a good while simply soaking it all in, snapping photos, and etching the scene into my memory. The bronze replica of Michelangelo's David stood proudly in the center of the square, a symbol of Florentine strength and artistry. It was built in 1869 by architect Giuseppe Poggi on a hill just south of the heart of the city. That year, Florence was the capital of Italy and the entire city was involved in an urban renewal. I thought about my family back in Montreal, about Sophie and Mateo, and wished they could share this moment with me. Perhaps one day we'll return together.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found not in grand monuments, but in quiet moments of reflection amidst breathtaking beauty.

Next on my list was the Basilica di San Miniato al Monte, just a short walk uphill from Piazzale Michelangelo. The basilica stands atop one of the highest points in the city. As I approached, the Romanesque facade gleamed in the sunlight, its green and white marble a testament to the artistry of centuries past. Inside, the atmosphere was serene, filled with the scent of incense and the soft murmur of prayers. I was immediately struck by the mosaic depicting Christ in benediction between the Virgin and St. Miniato.

I wandered through the church, admiring the intricate details of the marble floor and the stunning Cardinal of Portugal Chapel. The crypt, the oldest part of the church, held a particular fascination for me. It was supposedly built where the bones of St. Minias himself are held. The basilica has been described as one of the finest Romanesque structures in Tuscany and one of the most scenic churches in Italy. It was begun in 1013 by Bishop Alibrando and it was completed by the Emperor Henry II. St. Miniato was the first martyr of the city. He was probably a Greek merchant or an Armenian prince in pilgrimage to Rome. It is said that, around 250, arrived in Florence, began the life of a hermit and was beheaded during the anti-Christian persecutions of the emperor Decius. He then walked away from the place of execution with his own head in his hands, arriving on the other side of the Arno at the place of his hermitage where the current basilica stands, on Mons Florentinus.

Leaving the basilica, I decided to explore the Giardino Bardini. After the crowds at Piazzale Michelangelo, this garden offered a welcome respite, a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. The Giardino Bardini embodies seven centuries of both Florentine and gardening history, of innovation and change in botany and in fashions. In the 16th and 17th centuries it was a Florentine Baroque garden with grottoes, statues, fountains, flower gardens and copses of holm oak. Wandering through the grounds, I discovered hidden pathways, vibrant flowerbeds, and breathtaking views of the city. It was a tranquil oasis, a place to reflect on the beauty of nature and the artistry of humankind.

I paused by a wisteria-covered pergola, the fragrant blossoms creating a magical canopy overhead. It was the perfect spot to sit and sketch, capturing the essence of the garden in my notebook. I thought about Sophie, who loves gardening. I know she would adore this place.

For lunch, I ventured to Saporium Firenze, enticed by its reputation for contemporary Tuscan cuisine. This Michelin-starred restaurant is centred around contemporary Tuscan cuisine and a farm-to-plate philosophy. The experience was a delight, a culinary journey that celebrated the flavors of the region. I savored every bite, from the handmade pasta to the locally sourced cheeses. The chef’s innovative approach to traditional dishes was both surprising and satisfying.

In the afternoon, I decided to indulge in a little retail therapy at Mio Concept Store. Mio was born from a passion: the love for research, beautiful things and designer design by Antje d'Almeida, a sophisticated and cosmopolitan traveler of German origin who landed in Florence 15 years ago. The store had an eclectic mix of art, design, and handcrafted goods. I found a unique ceramic bowl, its vibrant colors reminiscent of the Peruvian textiles of my childhood. It was the perfect souvenir, a tangible reminder of my time in Florence.

As evening approached, I made my way to Osteria Antica Casa Torre for dinner. The staff is friendly that's what makes Osteria Antica Casa Torre so good. This restaurant is right aside the Chiesa di Sant'Egidio. The osteria exuded a cozy, welcoming atmosphere, the perfect setting for a traditional Tuscan meal. I ordered the *bistecca alla fiorentina*, a thick-cut steak cooked to perfection. It was a carnivore's dream, tender, juicy, and full of flavor.

Reflecting on the day, I realized that Florence had offered me so much more than just historical landmarks and artistic treasures. It had given me a chance to reconnect with myself, to appreciate the beauty that surrounds us, and to savor the simple pleasures of life. As I walked back to my apartment, the city lights twinkling around me, I felt a sense of gratitude for this incredible journey.

Tomorrow, I plan to delve deeper into Florence's artistic heritage with visits to Brunelleschi's dome and a guided city tour. I'm eager to uncover even more of the city's hidden gems and to continue my exploration of its rich history and culture. I will make sure to have breakfast at Caffè Gilli again, since it is close to my Appartamento Puccini - Adults Only.

As I prepare for another day of exploration, I am reminded of a quote by the great Florentine artist, Michelangelo:

*I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free.*

Perhaps, in a way, that's what I'm doing here in Florence – setting free the angel within myself, allowing the city's beauty and history to inspire and transform me.
