A Day of Reverence and Renaissance

Florence, the cradle of the Renaissance, has always held a special allure for me. As a restoration technician, I've spent countless hours studying the artistry and techniques of past masters, but nothing compares to experiencing their work firsthand. Today, my first day in Florence, was dedicated to immersing myself in the city's rich historical and artistic tapestry.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Caffè Gilli, a Florentine institution since 1733. The aroma of freshly baked pastries and strong Italian coffee filled the air, a perfect start to a day of exploration. The cafe, located on Piazza della Repubblica, offered a charming atmosphere. I enjoyed a cappuccino and a pastry while watching the city come to life. The location of Caffè Gilli is perfect, right on the corner of the famous Piazza Della Repubblica. Sipping my coffee, I could feel the pulse of Florence, a city that seamlessly blends history with modern life.

From there, I made my way to the Basilica of Santa Croce, a short walk from the café. As I approached, the sheer scale of the basilica was breathtaking. The Basilica of Santa Croce, the largest Franciscan church in the world, stands as a testament to Florence's artistic and historical significance. Known as the Temple of Italian Glories, it houses the tombs of some of Italy's most illustrious figures, including Michelangelo, Galileo, and Machiavelli. As I stepped inside, I was immediately struck by the grandeur and solemnity of the space.

The interior is a treasure trove of art and history. I spent hours wandering through the chapels, admiring the frescoes by Giotto, Donatello and other masters. Each artwork told a story, a testament to the artistic genius of the Renaissance. Standing before Michelangelo's tomb, I felt a profound sense of connection to the past. It was humbling to be in the presence of such greatness, to see the final resting place of a man whose work has inspired generations. I learned that the church was established in 1294 on the same site where a small chapel had previously been built to commemorate the death of Saint Francis of Assisi. The Basilica’s chapels house various frescoes by remarkable artists like Giotto, Brunelleschi and Donatello.

The stones of Florence whisper tales of artistry, innovation, and the enduring human spirit.

After soaking in the artistic splendor of Santa Croce, I decided to take a stroll and do some shopping at L'Arte de' Ciompi Firenze. I was looking for a unique souvenir, something that would remind me of my time in Florence. L'Arte de' Ciompi is a small shop filled with handmade wonders. It's a haven for anyone who appreciates traditional Florentine handicrafts.

Next on my itinerary was the Museo Nazionale del Bargello, a treasure trove of Renaissance sculpture. Housed in a formidable medieval palace, the Bargello holds masterpieces by Donatello, Michelangelo, and other giants of the era. As a restoration technician, I was particularly drawn to the intricate details and the sheer skill evident in each sculpture. The Bargello Museum is the most important museum in Florence after the Uffizi Gallery. I was eager to explore its halls and discover the artistic treasures within.

The collection is displayed across three floors, each dedicated to different periods and styles. The ground floor showcased 16th-century Tuscan works, including Michelangelo's Bacchus, a sculpture I had studied extensively in books but had never seen in person. Standing before it, I was struck by its lifelike quality, the way the marble seemed to breathe. The Salone del Camino, on the second floor, held the smallest bronze statues in Italy. The museum mainly has sculptures by big names such as Michelangelo, Ghiberti and Donatello.

For lunch, I ventured to Il Vezzo, a restaurant recommended for its authentic Florentine cuisine. It's a place that aims to offer something new and different from what the crowded center of Florence offers. I savored a delicious plate of *pappardelle al ragu*, the rich flavors of the Tuscan countryside dancing on my palate. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a warm atmosphere that made me feel right at home. Marco, the chef, is following his passion for cooking. He gained experience at 'Ora d'aria' in Florence, and then leaving for Piedmont, London and Marbella. Giovanni, Florentine DOC, Sommelier, with an innate passion for research and a strong attachment to the territory, has created a 'made in Tuscany' wine list with almost 100 labels.

As the day drew to a close, I found myself at La Giostra for dinner, a restaurant known for its traditional Tuscan dishes and its unique atmosphere. The restaurant was established by the late Austrian prince, Dimitri Kunz d'Asburgo Lorena and is still a noble family-run endeavour in present day, overseen by his twin sons Dimitri and Soldano. La Giostra is one of those other-worldly gems bursting with a winsome personality. The ambiance was warm and inviting, with candlelit tables and vaulted ceilings. I savored each bite of my meal, reflecting on the day's experiences. The staff welcomed me with a complimentary flute of spumante and antipasti. I chose one of the traditional Tuscan meals. The burrata boat ought not to be missed, while the Sacher Torte makes for outstanding finish.

Before heading back to my Appartamento Puccini, I took a leisurely stroll along the Arno River, the Ponte Vecchio shimmering in the moonlight. The sounds of the city faded into a gentle hum, and I felt a sense of peace wash over me. Florence had welcomed me with open arms, and I knew that this journey would be one I would never forget. I am already looking forward to tomorrow, when I plan to visit the Uffizi Galleries, Piazza della Signoria and the Loggia dei Lanzi, before finishing my day with a drink at Rasputin bar.

As I walked, I thought about my wife, Sophie, and my son, Mateo. I wished they could be here with me, sharing in this incredible experience. I made a mental note to bring them back to Florence someday, to show them the wonders of this city that has captured my heart. I also thought about my work back in Montreal, about the historical buildings I am helping to preserve. This trip to Florence is not just a vacation; it's an opportunity to deepen my understanding of architectural history, to learn from the masters, and to bring that knowledge back home with me.

I am eager to continue my exploration of Florence, to uncover more of its hidden gems, and to share my experiences with you. Stay tuned for more tales from this captivating city. Perhaps I'll even pick up some sunscreen – I seem to have forgotten it in Montreal, and the Florentine sun, even in March, can be quite strong! And an umbrella, just in case.

Good night from Florence!
