A Day of Cultural Immersion in Ayacucho

Today, I embarked on a journey to further understand Ayacucho's vibrant soul through its art and cultural expressions. With Mateo and Sophie by my side, we delved into the heart of this historic city, exploring spaces where art tells stories of the past and present. These experiences enriched our understanding of Ayacucho, connecting us more deeply to its people and traditions.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at CHARKY Tierra y Mar. It was a delightful start, fueling us for the day's adventures. Mateo, always eager to try new things, was particularly fond of the local pastries. With our bellies full, we set off to our first destination: the Centro Cultural de la USCH.

Exploring the Centro Cultural de la USCH

The Centro Cultural de la USCH, part of the Universidad Nacional de San Cristóbal de Huamanga, is a treasure trove of artistic and historical displays. As a restoration technician, I was immediately drawn to the building itself. The architecture, a blend of colonial and indigenous styles, spoke volumes about Ayacucho's layered history. Sophie, with her librarian's eye for detail, appreciated the meticulous preservation efforts.

Inside, we wandered through exhibits showcasing contemporary art, historical artifacts, and cultural displays. Mateo was fascinated by the traditional costumes and musical instruments. I found myself particularly captivated by the exhibits detailing the university's role in preserving local traditions and promoting cultural understanding. It was inspiring to see how the institution served as a bridge between the past and the future.

One exhibit focused on the history of the university itself, detailing its origins and evolution. Founded in 1677, the Universidad Nacional de San Cristóbal de Huamanga has played a pivotal role in the intellectual and cultural life of Ayacucho. I learned about the challenges it faced during periods of political turmoil and its resilience in maintaining its commitment to education and research. As someone who values the pursuit of knowledge and the preservation of history, I felt a deep connection to the university's mission.

Next on our itinerary was the MUSEO CASA DEL RETABLO. This museum is dedicated to the art of retablos, intricate portable altars that are a hallmark of Ayacucho's artistic heritage. As we walked through the museum's doors, we were immediately transported into a world of vibrant colors and detailed craftsmanship.

The retablos on display were nothing short of breathtaking. Each one told a story, depicting scenes from daily life, religious events, and historical moments. The level of detail was astounding, with tiny figures meticulously crafted and arranged within the wooden frames. Mateo was particularly fascinated by the miniature people and animals, asking endless questions about their roles and significance.

I was struck by the retablos' ability to capture the essence of Ayacucho's culture and history. They served as a visual record of the region's traditions, beliefs, and struggles. As a restoration technician, I appreciated the skill and artistry that went into creating these intricate works of art. I couldn't help but wonder about the stories of the artisans who had dedicated their lives to preserving this unique art form.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.

As we explored the museum, we learned about the history of retablos and their evolution over time. Originally used as portable altars by traveling priests, they gradually evolved into secular art forms, depicting scenes from everyday life and historical events. The museum also showcased the work of contemporary retablo artists, demonstrating how the tradition continues to thrive in Ayacucho today.

By lunchtime, we had worked up quite an appetite. We decided to try Casa Vieja Restobar, a local eatery known for its traditional Ayacuchan cuisine. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with rustic decor and a warm, welcoming atmosphere.

We ordered a variety of local specialties, including sopa de patasca (a hearty soup made with hominy and meat), cuy chactado (fried guinea pig), and adobo ayacuchano (pork stew). Mateo, always adventurous when it comes to food, was eager to try everything. Sophie and I enjoyed sampling the different flavors and spices, savoring the authentic taste of Ayacucho.

As we ate, we chatted about our experiences at the Centro Cultural de la USCH and the MUSEO CASA DEL RETABLO. We reflected on the importance of preserving cultural heritage and the role that art plays in shaping our understanding of the world. Mateo, in his own way, expressed his appreciation for the art and history we had encountered, promising to tell his friends back in Montreal about his adventures in Ayacucho.

In the evening, after Mateo had gone to bed, Sophie and I decided to venture out for a drink at Psicosis Bar. It was a chance for us to unwind and soak in the local atmosphere. The bar was lively and filled with locals and tourists alike. The music was upbeat, and the energy was infectious.

We ordered a couple of pisco sours, the national drink of Peru, and settled in to enjoy the evening. As we sipped our drinks, we watched the locals dance and laugh, feeling a sense of connection to the community. It was a reminder of why we love to travel and explore new cultures.

Dinner at Corazón Serrano

For dinner, we chose Corazón Serrano, enticed by its reputation for authentic Peruvian cuisine and lively atmosphere. The restaurant buzzed with locals, families, and tourists, all eager to savor the flavors of Ayacucho. The aroma of spices filled the air, promising a delightful culinary experience.

We started with appetizers of tequeños rellenos, crispy wonton-like snacks filled with cheese and herbs, and ocopa arequipeña, boiled potatoes covered in a creamy sauce made from peanuts, aji amarillo peppers, and huacatay, a fragrant Andean herb. For the main course, Sophie opted for the lomo saltado, a classic Peruvian stir-fry of beef, onions, tomatoes, and peppers served with rice and fries, while I decided on the pachamanca, a traditional Andean dish of meat and vegetables cooked in an underground oven, seasoned with local herbs and spices. Mateo, of course, chose the pollo a la brasa, a Peruvian-style roasted chicken that is always a hit with kids.

As we savored our meal, we reflected on the day's adventures, appreciating the rich culture and warm hospitality of Ayacucho. The food was not just delicious; it was a celebration of Peruvian heritage, each dish telling a story of tradition and innovation. Mateo, despite his initial hesitation about some of the more exotic ingredients, thoroughly enjoyed the meal, declaring the pollo a la brasa the best he had ever tasted.

Reflections on the Day

Today was a day of cultural immersion, artistic discovery, and culinary delights. From the artistic treasures of the Centro Cultural de la USCH and the MUSEO CASA DEL RETABLO to the savory flavors of Casa Vieja Restobar and Corazón Serrano, we experienced the essence of Ayacucho in all its glory. As we prepare for tomorrow's exploration of Taller De Esculturas En Piedra De Huamanga- Julio Gálvez and El guerrero Wari Ayacucho, I am filled with a sense of anticipation for the new adventures that await us.

As I reflect on our experiences, I am reminded of the importance of cultural preservation and the power of art to connect us to our shared humanity. I am grateful for the opportunity to share these moments with my family and to introduce Mateo to the rich heritage of his ancestors. Ayacucho is more than just a destination; it is a place where history comes alive, where traditions are celebrated, and where the spirit of Peru shines brightly.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the stone sculptures at Taller De Esculturas En Piedra De Huamanga- Julio Gálvez and visit El guerrero Wari Ayacucho. Mateo is particularly excited about seeing the stone sculptures, as he has always been fascinated by art and craftsmanship. Sophie is looking forward to learning more about the Wari culture and its influence on the region. As for me, I am eager to continue our exploration of Ayacucho's rich history and cultural heritage. I am also planning to visit Galeria 5 continentes to find a special souvenir to bring back to Montreal, a reminder of our incredible journey through Ayacucho.
