A Day of Discovery in Cusco
Today was all about immersing ourselves in the heart of Cusco's rich history and vibrant culture. We explored fascinating museums, each offering a unique glimpse into the past, and indulged in some truly delicious Peruvian cuisine. It was a day of learning, discovery, and delightful sensory experiences, a perfect blend of intellectual and gastronomic adventures.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Organika Restaurant. Sophie and Mateo were excited for the healthy options, while I was eager to try something new. Organika is known for its organic produce and fusion cuisine, so I opted for the quinotto without cheese. It was tasty! The atmosphere was relaxed, and the staff were friendly. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring.

First on our museum itinerary was the Museo de Arte Precolombino. The building itself is a beautiful colonial structure, and the exhibits were well-curated, showcasing a diverse collection of pre-Columbian art and artifacts. Mateo was fascinated by the pottery and the intricate designs, while Sophie and I appreciated the historical context provided by the informative displays. It was a great introduction to the artistic traditions of the region.

Next, we ventured into the Inka Museum, which proved to be a comprehensive overview of Inca history and culture. Housed in the Casa del Almirante, a historic colonial-era building, the museum boasts an impressive collection of Inca artifacts, from ceramics and textiles to tools and weapons. Mateo was particularly intrigued by the mummies on display, and I found the exhibits on Inca engineering and agriculture to be especially fascinating. The museum provided a valuable insight into the ingenuity and sophistication of the Inca civilization.

The essence of Cusco lies not only in its ancient stones but also in the vibrant spirit of its people and their enduring traditions.
Our final museum stop was the Coca Museum, a small but informative institution dedicated to the history and cultural significance of the coca leaf in Peru. We learned about the coca plant's traditional uses in medicine, religion, and daily life, as well as its controversial role in the production of cocaine. Mateo was curious about the different coca products on display, from teas and candies to liquors and soaps. While I was hesitant at first, I decided to try a coca tea, which had a mild, slightly bitter taste. It was an eye-opening experience that challenged my preconceived notions about the coca leaf.

After our museum adventures, we were ready for lunch. We chose Carpe Diem Cucina Italiana, a charming restaurant known for its handmade pasta and authentic Italian flavors. Sophie was happy to have a break from Peruvian food, and Mateo was excited for pizza. I decided to try the lasagna, which was delicious. The service was warm and attentive, and the atmosphere was cozy and inviting. It was a delightful culinary escape in the heart of Cusco.

In the late afternoon, we strolled through the Cusco Collection shop. It was filled with beautiful textiles, ceramics, and jewelry. Sophie bought a lovely alpaca scarf, and Mateo picked out a small wooden flute. I found a beautiful ceramic bowl that reminded me of the pottery I had seen in the Museo de Arte Precolombino. It was a great way to support local artisans and take home a piece of Cusco's artistic heritage.

For dinner, we decided to experience KUSYKAY Peruvian Craft Food, drawn by its reputation for blending traditional flavors with creative culinary techniques. The restaurant was cozy, and the staff were welcoming. I decided to try the vegetable ceviche, while Sophie and Mateo opted for traditional Peruvian dishes. The food was delicious, and the presentation was artful. It was a perfect ending to a day of cultural and culinary exploration.

Today was also the Festival of the Lord of Qoyllur Rit'i in Ocongate. Although the main festival is celebrated later in the year, some communities in the Cusco region hold small celebrations in January. It’s a unique cultural experience that mixes spirituality and tradition. It reminded me of the festivals back in Huancavelica.
As we walked back to the Jose Antonio Cusco Hotel, I reflected on the day's experiences. We had learned so much about Cusco's history, art, and culture, and we had savored some truly delicious food. It was a day that deepened our connection to my Peruvian roots and strengthened our bond as a family. Mateo was already asking about tomorrow's itinerary, eager to discover more of Cusco's hidden gems. He is particularly excited about visiting the San Blas Waterfall and caves. I am looking forward to it as well.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we plan to explore the artistic neighborhood of San Blas, visit the San Blas Waterfall and caves, and perhaps even learn about Inca astronomy at the Cusco Planetarium. It promises to be another day filled with adventure, discovery, and unforgettable memories. I am also hoping to find some time to play the quena. I haven’t done that in a while!
The weather in Cusco this time of year is mild, with temperatures ranging from 7°C to 19°C. It's the rainy season, so we’ve been prepared for showers, but the rain tends to be brief and doesn't disrupt our plans too much. I am glad Sophie packed our hiking shoes and warm clothing for high altitudes. I almost forgot the sunscreen, but Sophie reminded me just in time!
