A Day of Discovery Beyond the Tourist Trail

Today was a day of venturing off the beaten path, leaving behind the bustling Plaza de Armas to uncover some of Cusco's more secluded yet equally captivating locales. It’s always rewarding to find those quieter corners, where the spirit of a place feels more palpable, more personal. These are the stories and sites that truly resonate with me, and I'm eager to share this experience with you.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Inka Grill. The restaurant's location, close to the Plaza de Armas, made it a convenient choice, and the reviews I had read online spoke of a delightful fusion of Peruvian and international flavors. I opted for a traditional Peruvian breakfast, while Sophie and Mateo enjoyed some familiar favorites. It's important for Mateo to have a taste of home sometimes, even when we are exploring my roots.

With our stomachs full and anticipation high, we set off towards our first destination: the Cochahuasi Animal Sanctuary. Located a short drive outside Cusco, along the road to Pisac, the sanctuary promised an encounter with some of Peru's most fascinating wildlife. As we drove, I couldn't help but think about the animals we were about to see and the stories behind their rescue. It’s a cause close to my heart, and I was eager to support their work.

Arriving at Cochahuasi, we were immediately struck by the dedication and passion of the people who run the sanctuary. It’s not a zoo, but a genuine haven for animals rescued from illegal trafficking and mistreatment. We saw majestic Andean condors, playful pumas, and even some adorable Peruvian hairless dogs. Mateo was particularly fascinated by the condors, their massive wingspans casting shadows as they soared overhead. I explained to him how these animals are an important part of Peruvian culture.

The true measure of a society is how it treats its animals.

It was heartwarming to see these creatures being cared for with such love and attention. The sanctuary’s mission to educate visitors about conservation and the importance of respecting wildlife truly resonated with me. I was proud to support such a worthy cause.

After a fulfilling morning at Cochahuasi, we headed back towards Cusco for lunch. Narguila Restaurant was our chosen spot, based on its positive reviews and intriguing menu. The restaurant offered a cozy atmosphere and a diverse selection of dishes. We enjoyed a mix of Peruvian and international cuisine, savoring the flavors of the region. Mateo, surprisingly, tried the lomo saltado and declared it his new favorite dish! It’s moments like these, sharing new culinary experiences with my family, that make traveling so special.

With our appetites sated, we ventured to Qochapata, an often-overlooked Incan archaeological site nestled in the hills overlooking Cusco. The name, derived from Quechua words for “lake” and “elevated place”, hints at its geographical features. Unlike the crowded ruins closer to the city center, Qochapata offered a sense of solitude and tranquility. As we hiked through a verdant eucalyptus forest, the crisp, medicinal scent filled the air, adding to the mystical ambiance.

Reaching the site, we were greeted by ancient terraces and semi-reconstructed walls, remnants of a civilization long gone. I imagined what life must have been like for the people who once inhabited this place, their lives intertwined with the land and the mountains. The panoramic views of Cusco's historic center and the distant Andean peaks were breathtaking. It was easy to see why the Incas chose this location, a strategic vantage point offering both protection and a connection to the heavens.

As we explored Qochapata, I shared stories of Incan history and culture with Mateo, trying to bring the past to life for him. I want him to understand and appreciate the rich heritage that is part of who he is. He listened intently, his eyes wide with wonder. It’s these moments of connection, sharing our cultural roots with my son, that make this journey so meaningful. The weather was mild, with daily high temperatures around 63°F, making it perfect for exploring the ruins.

Our final stop of the day was ARTESANIAS LLANCAQMAKI, a local artisan market where we hoped to find some unique souvenirs. The market was a vibrant explosion of colors and textures, with handcrafted textiles, intricately carved wooden figures, and beautiful jewelry. Sophie and Mateo were immediately drawn to the colorful alpaca wool clothing, while I admired the skill and artistry of the local artisans.

We spent some time browsing the stalls, chatting with the vendors, and learning about their craft. It’s important to me to support local businesses and artisans whenever we travel. We purchased a few small items as mementos of our trip, each one a reminder of the beauty and culture of Cusco.

Dinner at Sepia Cusco was a delightful end to a day filled with exploration and discovery. The restaurant offered a fusion cuisine that was both innovative and delicious. I savored the flavors of the lomo saltado, while Sophie enjoyed the ají de gallina, and Mateo opted for a familiar pasta dish. The restaurant’s ambiance was warm and inviting, a perfect setting for reflecting on our day’s adventures.

As the day drew to a close, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to share this experience with my family. Cusco had revealed its hidden gems, and we had embraced them with open hearts. It’s these moments of connection, discovery, and cultural immersion that make traveling so rewarding. Tomorrow, we plan to visit Paucartambo, a town known for its traditional dances and vibrant culture. I am eager to see what new adventures await us.

This trip is not just a vacation; it’s a journey of rediscovery, a chance to reconnect with my roots and share my heritage with my family. And as I drift off to sleep, I know that the memories we are creating will last a lifetime.

I’m also reminded of the importance of being prepared. While we packed most of the essentials, I realized we forgot sunscreen. The high altitude sun can be quite intense, even on a cloudy day. I’ll make sure to pick some up tomorrow before we head out to Paucartambo. It’s a small detail, but one that can make a big difference in our comfort and enjoyment.

As I reflect on the day, I am filled with a sense of contentment. We explored ancient ruins, encountered fascinating wildlife, and savored the flavors of Peru. But most importantly, we did it together, as a family. And that, to me, is the greatest treasure of all.
