Wilcacocha's Reflection

Today was a day of serene reflection, a gentle pause in our otherwise vigorous trek around the Huayhuash Circuit. After several days of challenging ascents and descents, the tranquil shores of Laguna de Wilcacocha offered a perfect setting to absorb the immensity of the Cordillera Blanca. It was a day to appreciate the journey thus far, and to mentally prepare for the adventures that still lie ahead.

We started our day, as usual, with a hearty breakfast at our campsite courtesy of Cordillera Huayhuash [itinerary]. The sun was just beginning to peek over the mountains, casting a golden hue on the landscape. There’s something magical about these mornings; the crisp air, the quiet anticipation, and the shared camaraderie over a warm meal. Mateo was especially excited, recounting dreams of soaring over the mountains like a condor. His enthusiasm is infectious, and it sets a positive tone for the entire day. Sophie and I exchanged knowing glances, grateful for these moments of family bonding amidst such spectacular scenery.

Our main destination for the day was Laguna de Wilcacocha [itinerary]. Unlike some of the more strenuous treks we’ve undertaken, reaching this serene lake was relatively easy, allowing us to focus on soaking in the views and enjoying each other's company. The trail meandered through small Andean villages, offering glimpses into the traditional way of life of the locals. It always strikes me how these communities manage to thrive in such a rugged environment, their colorful clothing a stark contrast to the muted tones of the mountains. Mateo was particularly intrigued by the animals we encountered along the way—cows, sheep, donkeys, and horses grazing peacefully on the surrounding grass. He peppered me with questions about their care and their role in the local economy, showcasing his ever-growing curiosity about the world around him.

As we ascended, the panorama of the Cordillera Blanca slowly unfolded before us. The towering peaks, draped in snow and ice, were simply breathtaking. I tried to capture the scene with my camera, but no photograph could truly do justice to the sheer scale and grandeur of the landscape. It’s a view that imprints itself on your memory, a reminder of the raw, untamed beauty of nature. We found a perfect spot on a hill overlooking the lake and the Cordillera Blanca. We sat there for what seemed like hours, simply absorbing the view and enjoying the peaceful silence. Mateo skipped stones on the lake's surface, while Sophie sketched in her notebook, capturing the essence of the scene in her own artistic way. I closed my eyes and listened to the wind whispering through the tall grass, feeling a sense of profound connection to this ancient land.

For lunch, we enjoyed a simple picnic prepared by Cordillera Huayhuash [itinerary]. Sandwiches, fresh fruit, and some local snacks gave us the energy to continue our exploration. After lunch, we took a leisurely stroll around the lake. The water was crystal clear, reflecting the surrounding mountains like a mirror. We spotted flocks of ducks swimming gracefully on the surface, adding to the idyllic scene. Mateo tried to get closer to them, but they remained elusive, always just out of reach.

In the afternoon, we took some time to explore the local shops in the Cordillera Huayhuash [itinerary]. I was hoping to find a traditional quena, the Andean flute, but unfortunately, my search was unsuccessful. However, we did find some beautiful hand-woven textiles and Mateo picked out a small llama figurine as a souvenir. Supporting the local artisans is important to us, and it’s a way to give back to the communities that have welcomed us with such warmth and hospitality.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way back to our campsite, our hearts full of gratitude for the beauty and tranquility we had experienced. The sunset painted the sky in vibrant hues of orange and purple, casting a magical glow on the mountains. We sat around the campfire, sharing stories and laughter, and roasting marshmallows. These are the moments I cherish the most—the simple joys of family life, amplified by the stunning backdrop of the Huayhuash Circuit.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, our itinerary takes us to Callejón de Huaylas [itinerary]. I am excited to see what new adventures await us, but I will always remember this day of quiet reflection at Laguna de Wilcacocha. It was a reminder that sometimes, the most profound experiences are found not in conquering peaks, but in simply being present and appreciating the beauty that surrounds us. As we prepare for the next leg of our journey, I feel a renewed sense of energy and determination, ready to embrace whatever challenges and wonders lie ahead.

Before drifting off to sleep, I checked our gear, making sure everything was in order for tomorrow’s travels. I was a bit disappointed that I had forgotten to pack insect repellent and extra batteries for my flashlight [TripDetails]. It’s a small oversight, but one that could potentially cause some discomfort. I made a mental note to purchase these items as soon as we have the opportunity. Despite this minor setback, I am filled with a sense of contentment and anticipation. The Huayhuash Circuit has already exceeded my expectations, and I can’t wait to see what the remaining days have in store for us.

Tomorrow, we venture into the Callejón de Huaylas [itinerary], a valley known for its stunning scenery and vibrant culture. We’re planning to visit some local markets and perhaps even try our hand at preparing some traditional Peruvian dishes. Sophie is particularly excited about this, as she loves to immerse herself in the culinary traditions of the places we visit. And of course, Mateo is always up for trying new foods, especially if they involve chocolate! We’ll also be stopping by a local bar in Cordillera Huayhuash [itinerary], where I hope to sample some of the local brews and perhaps even strike up a conversation with some of the locals. I’m always eager to learn more about the history and culture of the places we visit, and there’s no better way to do that than by connecting with the people who call these places home.

As I close my eyes and drift off to sleep, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for this incredible journey. The Huayhuash Circuit has challenged us, inspired us, and brought us closer together as a family. And as I look forward to the adventures that await us in the days to come, I know that these memories will stay with us long after we return to Montreal. This trip has been more than just a vacation; it’s been a transformative experience that has enriched our lives in countless ways.
