Reaching New Heights in Huayhuash
Today was a day of physical challenge and immense reward. As a restoration technician, I'm used to working with my hands, but the mountains demand a different kind of strength. Today, the Huayhuash Circuit tested our limits, pushing us to climb higher and dig deeper. The views, however, were more than worth it, painting a picture of Andean majesty that will forever be etched in my memory.
The day began, as always, with a hearty breakfast at our campsite courtesy of Cordillera Huayhuash, fuelling us for the trek ahead. The air was crisp and cool, a typical May morning in the Andes. I made sure Mateo had his layers on; the mountains can be deceiving, with the sun warm on your face but the wind biting at your ears. Sophie, ever the organized one, checked our packs one last time, ensuring we had enough water and snacks to keep us going. As a family, we’ve learned the importance of preparation, especially in these remote areas. It reminded me of preparing for a challenging restoration project back in Montreal, every detail meticulously planned to ensure success.
Our goal for the day was the Peruvian Mountains Trek Climb, a significant ascent that promised panoramic views of the Cordillera Huayhuash.

As we started our trek, I couldn't help but feel a sense of pride sharing this part of my heritage with my family. I told Mateo stories of my childhood in Huancavelica, of how the mountains were not just geographical features but living entities, revered and respected by the Andean people.
The climb was arduous, no doubt about it. The altitude, well over 4,000 meters, made each step a conscious effort. Mateo, bless his heart, started strong, his youthful energy boundless. But even he began to feel the strain as we gained elevation. Sophie and I took turns encouraging him, reminding him of the stunning views that awaited us at the top. I remembered my grandfather's words, a skilled carpenter from Huancavelica, who always said, "The greatest rewards come after the hardest work." It’s a philosophy I’ve carried with me throughout my life, and one I try to instill in Mateo.
The mountains are a testament to the enduring strength and beauty of the natural world, a place where we can disconnect from the noise of modern life and reconnect with ourselves and our loved ones.
As we climbed higher, the landscape transformed. The lush green valleys gave way to rocky terrain, patches of snow clinging to the steep slopes. The air grew thinner, and the wind howled like a restless spirit. We paused frequently, catching our breath and taking in the awe-inspiring scenery. The towering peaks, draped in snow and ice, seemed to pierce the sky, their jagged edges silhouetted against the azure canvas. I pointed out the different peaks to Mateo, sharing their names and the stories associated with them. These mountains, I explained, are considered sacred by the local communities, protectors and providers of life.
At one point, Mateo stumbled, his face etched with exhaustion. I knelt beside him, offering him water and a piece of chocolate. "Papa, I don't know if I can go on," he said, his voice barely a whisper. I looked into his eyes, seeing a flicker of doubt. I told him about the restoration projects I've worked on, how sometimes the most challenging part is not the physical labor but the mental fortitude required to keep going when things get tough. I reminded him that we were doing this together, as a family, and that we would reach the top, one step at a time.
Fueled by renewed determination, Mateo pushed on, his small legs churning with surprising strength. Sophie and I flanked him, offering words of encouragement and support. Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, we reached the summit. The view was simply breathtaking. The entire Cordillera Huayhuash stretched before us, a vast expanse of snow-capped peaks, turquoise lakes, and verdant valleys. The world seemed to fall away, leaving us suspended in a realm of pure, unadulterated beauty.
We spent a long time at the summit, simply soaking in the scenery. Mateo, his exhaustion forgotten, ran around excitedly, pointing out the different landmarks. Sophie, her eyes shining with joy, took countless photos, capturing the moment for posterity. I felt a profound sense of gratitude, for the opportunity to share this experience with my family, for the strength to overcome the challenges, and for the sheer, unadulterated beauty of the Andes.
As the sun began its descent, we started our trek back down, our hearts full of memories and our bodies weary but satisfied. We stopped at Cordillera Huayhuash for lunch and dinner, savoring every bite. Even Mateo, usually a picky eater, devoured his meal with gusto. As we sat around the campfire that evening, sharing stories and laughter, I realized that this trip was more than just a vacation; it was a journey of discovery, a chance to connect with each other and with the natural world.
Back at the campsite, under a blanket of stars, I reflected on the day's events. The climb had been tough, but it had also been incredibly rewarding. We had pushed ourselves to our limits, both physically and mentally, and had emerged stronger, more resilient, and more connected as a family. The mountains had tested us, but they had also revealed our inner strength. They reminded me of the historical buildings I restore in Montreal; both demand respect, patience, and a deep appreciation for their enduring beauty.
Tomorrow, we continue our adventure, exploring more of the Huayhuash Circuit. According to the itinerary, we will visit HIGH SUMMIT PERU SAC - Huaraz/Peru and HUAYHUASH TREK PERÚ. I am excited to see what new challenges and wonders await us. But for now, I am content to rest, knowing that we have conquered another peak and created memories that will last a lifetime. I am also thinking of getting Mateo a small souvenir at the shop in Cordillera Huayhuash as a reward for his efforts.
Good night from the heart of the Andes.
