First Steps in Huayhuash National Park
Today marked the beginning of our family's grand adventure in the Peruvian Andes. Leaving behind the familiar streets of Montreal, we stepped into a world of towering peaks and vibrant culture, a stark yet beautiful contrast to our everyday lives. The air is crisp, the scenery breathtaking, and the anticipation palpable as we embark on this 11-day trek through the Huayhuash Circuit.

The journey began long before our boots hit the trail. After months of planning and packing, the day finally arrived when we boarded our flight from Montreal to Lima, a bittersweet moment of leaving home yet eagerly anticipating the unknown. The connecting domestic flight to Huaraz was smooth, offering us glimpses of the vast landscapes that awaited us. As we descended into Huaraz, the city nestled in the mountains, I couldn't help but feel a surge of excitement mixed with a touch of nervousness. This was it – the start of our family trekking adventure.
Touching down in Huaraz, the altitude was immediately noticeable. Even Mateo, full of youthful energy, seemed to take a moment to adjust to the thinner air. Sophie and I exchanged knowing glances, reminding each other to take it slow and steady, a mantra we would likely repeat throughout our journey. Huaraz, sitting at nearly 10,000 feet, is the perfect place to acclimatize before a big trek.
After gathering our bags, we made our way to the Cordillera Huayhuash, a cozy spot where we planned to have breakfast, lunch, and dinner today. It was a welcome sight after our travels. The aroma of local spices filled the air, a comforting invitation to immerse ourselves in Peruvian cuisine. Over a hearty breakfast of mate de coca and fresh bread, we discussed our plans for the day, a mix of excitement and nervous anticipation filling the conversation. We would also be doing some shopping today at Cordillera Huayhuash, making sure we had all the essentials.

The mountains are calling and I must go. - John Muir
Our first official stop was Huayhuash National Park. The park itself is stunning, and as we walked through it, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the sheer scale of nature's grandeur. The towering peaks, the crisp air, and the vibrant flora created a sensory overload that was both invigorating and humbling. Mateo was particularly fascinated by the local wildlife, his eyes wide with wonder as he spotted various birds and insects along the trail.
As we ventured further into the park, I couldn't help but reflect on the cultural significance of this region. The Cordillera Huayhuash has been home to indigenous communities for centuries, their traditions and way of life deeply intertwined with the land. I shared stories with Mateo about my own upbringing in Huancavelica, Peru, and the importance of respecting and preserving our cultural heritage. I told him about how the Incas considered the Cordillera Huayhuash sacred and divine. The local Quechua-speaking people maintain a close connection to the land, practicing traditional agriculture and pastoralism that have been passed down through generations.
Lunch was a simple yet satisfying affair, enjoyed amidst the breathtaking scenery of the Huayhuash National Park. We savored every bite of our sandwiches, the flavors enhanced by the fresh mountain air and the stunning views. As we ate, we observed other trekkers passing by, a diverse group of adventurers from all corners of the globe, all drawn to this remote corner of the Andes.
The afternoon was dedicated to exploring more of Huayhuash National Park, taking in its hidden gems and less-traveled paths. We stumbled upon a secluded waterfall, its cascading waters creating a mesmerizing spectacle. Mateo couldn't resist dipping his hands in the icy stream, his laughter echoing through the valley. It was moments like these that reminded me of the importance of disconnecting from our digital lives and reconnecting with nature.
As the day drew to a close, we returned to our campsite, the setting sun casting a warm golden glow over the mountains. Dinner was a hearty stew, cooked over an open fire, its comforting aroma filling the air. We shared stories and laughter around the campfire, our bond as a family growing stronger with each passing moment. Even Sophie, who initially had reservations about camping, seemed to be embracing the experience, her eyes sparkling with contentment.
Before settling into our tents, I took a moment to gaze up at the night sky, the stars shining with an intensity I had rarely witnessed in Montreal. The vastness of the universe seemed to mirror the magnitude of our adventure, a reminder of the infinite possibilities that lay ahead. As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this opportunity to explore the Huayhuash Circuit with my family, a journey that promised to be both challenging and transformative.
The weather today was mild, with light rain and temperatures around 20°F (-7°C). We were well-prepared with our layers of warm clothing, but I made a mental note to purchase some insect repellent in Cordillera Huayhuash, as I had forgotten it back in Montreal. It seems the insects are enjoying the Peruvian wilderness just as much as we are!
Tomorrow, we are planning to visit Cordillera Huayhuash and Huayhash. We will also try to find a bar at Paso trapecio, cordillera Huayhuash, for a relaxing drink after a long day of trekking. I am looking forward to continuing our trek and seeing what other wonders this beautiful region has in store for us. It is also important to ascend gradually to avoid altitude sickness.
Today was more than just the first day of our trek; it was a day of connection – connection with nature, connection with each other, and connection with the rich cultural heritage of Peru. As we continue our journey, I am excited to see what other lessons and experiences await us in the heart of the Andes. This trip is not just a vacation; it's an opportunity for Mateo to learn about his heritage and for us to create lasting memories as a family. I am grateful for this experience and excited for what lies ahead.
I am especially grateful to be sharing this experience with my family. Sophie's support and Mateo's boundless enthusiasm make every challenge worthwhile. I hope our journey inspires others to step outside their comfort zones and explore the world with their loved ones.
The Huayhuash Circuit is more than just a trek; it's an immersion into the heart of the Andes, a chance to disconnect from the modern world and reconnect with the raw beauty of nature. As we continue our journey, I am eager to share our experiences and insights with you, hoping to inspire your own adventures and explorations. Stay tuned for more updates from the trail!
