Seeking Solace and Savoring Flavors on Mount Olympus

Today was a day of spiritual exploration and culinary delight here on Mount Olympus. Sophie and I ventured into the heart of Greek Orthodoxy, visiting significant religious sites and indulging in the local cuisine. It was a day that nourished both our souls and our appetites, leaving us with a deeper appreciation for the rich culture and history of this region.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Stavros Refuge - Shelter D. The crisp mountain air had worked up quite an appetite, and the refuge provided the perfect setting to fuel up for the day's adventures. The panoramic views of the coast were simply breathtaking, a tranquil backdrop as we enjoyed a simple, yet satisfying meal. I had heard they were known for their goat soup, but decided to try something different, and it was delicious. Sophie enjoyed a traditional Greek coffee, savoring the strong, rich flavor as she gazed out at the stunning vista.

With our bellies full and spirits high, we set off to explore the New Holy Monastery of Saint Dionysios of Olympus. The monastery is located a few kilometers from Litochoro and has a close connection to the Old Monastery. The original monastery suffered damage during the Greek uprising against the Ottoman Empire in 1821 and was almost completely destroyed by Nazi forces in 1943. Fortunately, the monks preserved many items, icons and relics, keeping them safe until the New Monastery was constructed in 1950. As a restoration technician, I was particularly interested in the architecture and the preservation efforts that went into rebuilding this sacred place. Sophie, ever the librarian, was drawn to the historical documents and icons housed in the monastery museum.

It was interesting to learn about Saint Dionysios, who lived in the 16th century and was known for his missionary work. The monastery has a ban on women entering certain areas, a tradition established by Saint Dionysios, but thankfully, Sophie was able to visit the new church dedicated to the Saint, the exhibition hall, and the monastery shop. I found myself reflecting on the dedication and resilience of the monks who have kept the spirit of this place alive through centuries of turmoil.

The spirit of a place resides not only in its stones and structures but also in the stories and traditions that echo through its halls.

Next on our itinerary was the Sacred Cave of Saint Dionysios of Olympus. This cave was once the hermitage of Saint Dionysios, a place of solitude and contemplation. The walk to the cave was a peaceful pilgrimage, a gentle path winding through lush greenery and dramatic rock formations. The air was filled with the scent of pine and damp earth, and the only sounds were the rustling of leaves and the distant trickle of water. It was a truly serene experience, a chance to disconnect from the world and connect with something deeper.

Inside the cave, we found a small chapel, a testament to the enduring faith of the pilgrims who have visited this site for centuries. We lit candles in homage to the saint, feeling a sense of connection to the spiritual heritage of this area. It was a humbling experience, a reminder of the power of faith and the importance of preserving these sacred spaces.

After our spiritual sojourn, it was time to indulge in some more earthly delights. We headed to Ta Mezedakia for lunch, a local restaurant known for its traditional Greek cuisine. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the aroma of grilled meats and fresh herbs filled the air. We ordered a selection of mezedes, small plates of local specialties, and savored each bite. The flavors were bold and authentic, a true taste of Greece. I especially enjoyed the moussaka, while Sophie raved about the dolmades.

As the afternoon sun began to dip behind the mountains, we decided to do some souvenir shopping at the Greek Unique Concept Gift Store. I was hoping to find a quena, similar to the one I play back in Montreal, but instead found some lovely ceramics. Sophie picked out a beautiful hand-painted bowl, while I opted for a set of olive oil and vinegar dispensers. It's always a pleasure to find unique, locally crafted items that reflect the culture of a place.

For dinner, we chose To Pazari, another local favorite. The restaurant was bustling with activity, filled with locals and tourists alike. We ordered fresh seafood, grilled to perfection, and enjoyed it with a crisp Greek salad. The meal was a celebration of the flavors of the sea, a perfect ending to a day of exploration and discovery.

As we walked back to our lodging, hand in hand, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences we had shared today. Mount Olympus is more than just a mountain; it's a place of spiritual significance, natural beauty, and culinary delights. It's a place that nourishes the soul and awakens the senses.

Tomorrow, we plan to ascend further, aiming for the Muses Plateau and the Skala Summit. I'm eager to see what new perspectives and vistas await us as we continue our journey into the heart of this mythical mountain. We might even stop by the Different All Day Bar for a nightcap, depending on how strenuous the hike is! Until then, goodnight from Mount Olympus.

Looking ahead, I realize I forgot to pack a raincoat! I'll need to find one at the store tomorrow, just in case the weather turns. It's always something, isn't it?
