Day 8: A Tuscan Tapestry: Vineyards, Views, and Vino Nobile in Montepulciano
Immerse yourself in the heart of Tuscany: Explore cypress-lined roads, historic cellars, and savor the flavors of Montepulciano's culinary gems.
A Day of Tuscan Dreams
Today was a day of pure Tuscan indulgence, a symphony of sights, smells, and tastes that will linger in my memory long after we've left this beautiful region. From the iconic cypress trees to the depths of ancient wine cellars, Montepulciano and its surroundings offered a sensory feast. I am starting to think that maybe I should consider relocating to Italy, maybe start a new career here, perhaps as a tour guide.
Our Sunday began with a hearty breakfast at Fra L'Altro - Osteria & Bottiglieria. The osteria is nestled away in a quiet street, Borgo Buio, offering a true immersion into the authentic flavors of Tuscan cuisine. The family opted for a selection of pastries and strong Italian coffee, while I decided on baccalà, polenta, and turnip greens. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration. The blend of traditional Tuscan cuisine with modern culinary techniques was simply amazing. The staff were very friendly and welcoming, making our dining experience even more memorable.

With our stomachs full and spirits high, we set off to capture the quintessential Tuscan landscape at Cipressi di San Quirico d'Orcia. The drive itself was a treat, winding through rolling hills dotted with vineyards and olive groves. As we approached San Quirico d'Orcia, the anticipation grew, and then, there they were – the iconic cypress trees, standing proudly against the backdrop of the golden countryside. I have seen many pictures of it, but seeing it with my own eyes made it even more special. We parked the car and walked along the gravel road to get the best view. The family and I spent a good hour taking photos and simply soaking in the beauty of the scene. The children were amazed by the trees and ran around them, laughing and playing. Even Aisha, who is not usually one for landscapes, was captivated by the view.

The beauty of Tuscany lies not just in its landscapes, but in the way it nourishes the soul.
Next on our itinerary was a visit to the De' Ricci Cantine Storiche in Montepulciano, a journey into the heart of Vino Nobile production. As an archivist, I am always fascinated by history, and this cellar was a living museum. The sheer scale of the place was impressive, with massive Slavonian oak barrels lining the walls, each one holding a piece of Tuscan history. The tour guide was incredibly knowledgeable, sharing the secrets of winemaking passed down through generations. We learned about the different types of grapes used, the fermentation process, and the aging techniques that give Vino Nobile its unique character.

Of course, no visit to a wine cellar would be complete without a tasting. We sampled several of De' Ricci's finest wines, each one a testament to the terroir and the skill of the winemakers. The Vino Nobile di Montepulciano was particularly memorable, with its rich, complex flavors and smooth finish. I even bought a bottle to take back home, a souvenir that will transport me back to Tuscany with every sip. The tour guide was very helpful and patient, answering all of our questions and making sure we had a great time. Farah and Imani enjoyed the tour as well, although they were more interested in the history and architecture of the cellar than the wine itself.
After our wine-tasting adventure, we drove to Radda in Chianti, a charming hilltop village that exudes medieval charm. The drive was scenic, offering panoramic views of the Chianti Classico region. Radda itself is a maze of narrow cobblestone streets, lined with artisan shops, enotecas, and restaurants. We parked the car outside the city walls and wandered through the town, soaking in the atmosphere. We visited the Palazzo del Podestà, with its heraldic shields, and walked along the medieval walkways, enjoying the quiet and evocative atmosphere. The children enjoyed playing in the public park area, while Aisha and I browsed the local shops.

We spent some time exploring the town walls and medieval passageways, imagining what life must have been like centuries ago. Radda is known as the heart of Chianti Classico, and it was easy to see why. The town is surrounded by vineyards and olive groves, and the air is filled with the scent of wine and rosemary. We stopped at a local enoteca for a glass of Chianti Classico, savoring the flavors of the region. The wine was excellent, and the atmosphere was cozy and inviting.
Before heading back to Montepulciano, we stopped at Maledetti Toscani Montepulciano, a leather shop that is steeped in history. The shop is located in an ancient building in the heart of Montepulciano, and it is designed to showcase the beauty and uniqueness of the leather products. I purchased a beautiful leather-bound journal, a perfect place to record my travel memories. Aisha bought a stylish leather handbag, while Farah and Imani picked out some smaller souvenirs. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and they told us about the history of the shop and the Maledetti Toscani brand.

As the sun began to set, we made our way back to Montepulciano, ready for a delicious dinner at Baccano Hostarìa Montepulciano. This charming restaurant is known for its authentic Tuscan cuisine and warm hospitality. We started with a selection of antipasti, including bruschetta, cured meats, and cheeses. For our main courses, we ordered pici pasta with tomato sauce, grilled steak, and roasted vegetables. Everything was cooked to perfection, and the flavors were incredible. The pasta was perfectly al dente, the steak was tender and juicy, and the vegetables were bursting with flavor. The service was excellent, and the staff made us feel like we were part of their family.

For dinner, I opted for their pici all'aglione, while Aisha enjoyed a classic Florentine steak. The kids, predictably, went for pasta. The atmosphere was lively and convivial, a perfect end to a day of Tuscan adventures. The restaurant is family-run, and the owner was very kind and hospitable. He told us about the history of the restaurant and the local area.
As I sit here now, reflecting on the day, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and contentment. Tuscany has a way of captivating the soul, of slowing down time and allowing you to appreciate the simple pleasures of life. The beauty of the landscape, the richness of the culture, and the warmth of the people have all left an indelible mark on my heart.
Tomorrow, our last day in Montepulciano, we plan to explore the Viewpoint on Montepulciano, Porta delle Farine, and Riserva naturale Lucciola Bella. I am looking forward to another day of discovery and adventure, savoring every moment of our Tuscan escape. I am really looking forward to the Riserva naturale Lucciola Bella, as I have heard it is a great place to relax and enjoy nature. I am also excited to see the Viewpoint on Montepulciano, as I am sure it will offer stunning views of the town and the surrounding countryside.
