A Day of Tasmanian Tales
Today, the ninth day of our family adventure in Tasmania, was a delightful blend of art, history, and the stunning landscapes that define this corner of the world. It's days like these that remind me why Aisha and I wanted to bring Farah and Imani here – to immerse them in experiences that broaden their horizons and create lasting memories. While London holds a special place in our hearts, there's something about the raw beauty of Tasmania that captivates the soul.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at the Hungry Wombat Cafe. The name alone was enough to pique the kids’ interest, and the promise of tasty hamburgers, bacon rolls, and pancakes sealed the deal. It was a charming, down-to-earth countryside eatery with delicious food and great coffee. I opted for a classic Aussie burger, while Aisha enjoyed the French toast. Farah, ever the adventurous one, tried the curried prawn and chicken pie. Imani, predictably, went for the pancakes. Fueled up, we set off to capture a memorable photo at the Cradle365 Photo Holder. It's a quirky spot, perfect for a family snapshot with Cradle Mountain as a backdrop. I must admit, coordinating everyone for the photo took a few attempts, but the end result was worth it – a perfect memento of our time here.

Next on our itinerary was the Sheffield Murals Self-Guided Walking Tour. Sheffield, known as the 'Town of Murals,' is a short drive from Cradle Mountain. As an archivist, I am naturally drawn to historical narratives, and these murals offered a unique way to connect with Tasmania's past and present. Each mural tells a story, reflecting the town's rich history and the creativity of local and visiting artists.
Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
The self-guided tour allowed us to explore at our own pace. Aisha, with her designer’s eye, was particularly fascinated by the artistic techniques and the stories behind each mural. Farah, always keen on photography, found endless inspiration in the vibrant colors and intricate details. Imani, surprisingly, was quite engaged, asking questions about the historical events depicted in the murals. It was heartening to see him connect with the stories in such a meaningful way. We learned that Sheffield has over 60 murals, each a testament to the town's history and artistic spirit. The first mural, Stillness & Warmth, depicts Gustav Weindorfer sharing his fire with native wildlife. It was a poignant reminder of the importance of conservation and our connection to nature.

After immersing ourselves in Sheffield's art scene, we drove to Villarett Gardens for lunch. The gardens themselves were a sight to behold – a peaceful oasis with beautiful flowers and stunning views. We enjoyed a delightful meal amidst the lovely garden setting. Aisha was particularly impressed with the exceptional Tasmanian wines. As we savored our lunch, we reflected on the morning's adventures. It was a perfect blend of culture and nature, a testament to the diverse experiences Tasmania has to offer.

In the afternoon, we visited the Blue Tree Gallery in Moina. This contemporary art gallery, housed in a converted shipping container, focuses on mental well-being and emotion. The gallery showcases many artisan gifts and souvenirs all made right here in Tasmania. As someone who appreciates the power of visual arts, I found the gallery's mission particularly compelling. The artist, Aimee Rowland, uses her work to raise awareness for mental illness, normalizing vulnerability through her art. It was a thought-provoking experience, reminding us of the importance of empathy and connection in our lives. Aisha found inspiration in the use of colour and form, while Farah was drawn to the underlying messages of hope and resilience.

Before heading back to our accommodation, we made a stop at the Cradle Mountain Wilderness Village Restaurant for dinner. Situated in temperate rainforest, the village offered a tranquil setting for our evening meal. The restaurant prides itself on using local and fresh produce, and the menu was a delightful showcase of Tasmanian cuisine. We shared a selection of small plates, savoring the flavors of the region. The kids particularly enjoyed the desserts, a sweet ending to a day filled with exploration and discovery.

As we drove back, the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the landscape. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of eucalyptus and damp earth. It was a moment of perfect serenity, a reminder of the simple joys of life – family, nature, and shared experiences. Imani was already fast asleep, dreaming of wombats and murals, while Farah was busy editing her photos, eager to share them with her friends back home. Aisha and I exchanged a knowing glance, grateful for the opportunity to create these memories with our children.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Mole Creek Caves and Marakoopa Cave. I am particularly excited about this, as I have always been fascinated by geology and the hidden wonders beneath our feet. It will be another opportunity to learn and explore, to connect with nature and each other. As I reflect on today's adventures, I am reminded of the importance of slowing down and appreciating the beauty around us. It's easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of everyday life, but moments like these – surrounded by family and immersed in nature – are what truly matter. And as we continue our journey through Tasmania, I am filled with anticipation for the discoveries that await us, and the memories we will create together.
I am also glad that we remembered to pack our rain jackets, as the weather in Cradle Mountain can be unpredictable. However, I am kicking myself for forgetting the insect repellent – the mozzies have been quite persistent in the evenings. We'll definitely need to pick some up before our next adventure.
As I sit here writing this, the sounds of the Tasmanian wilderness lull me into a peaceful state. The gentle rustling of leaves, the distant call of a native bird – it's a symphony of nature that soothes the soul. I feel a deep sense of gratitude for this opportunity to explore such a remarkable place with my family. And as we continue our journey, I am committed to sharing our experiences with you, in the hope that it inspires you to embark on your own adventures, to discover the beauty and wonder that awaits you in every corner of the world.
