Family Adventure to Cradle Mountain
Day 12: A Day of Discovery: Waterfalls, Wilderness, and Warm Tasmanian Hospitality
Immersing ourselves in Cradle Mountain's natural beauty, from Hartnett Falls to New Pelion Hut, topped off with local Tasmanian flavors.
Chasing Waterfalls and Wilderness Wonders
Today was a day of embracing the raw beauty of Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, a journey that took us through cascading waterfalls, serene wilderness, and the welcoming embrace of Tasmanian hospitality. It’s days like these that remind me why I started this blog – to share the stories and experiences that touch the soul, and hopefully inspire others to seek out their own adventures.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Elements Cafe near Cradle Mountain. Aisha and the kids were eager to fuel up before our trek, and the cafe's cozy atmosphere and locally-sourced menu were just what we needed. I opted for the classic eggs and bacon, while Aisha enjoyed a fresh sandwich. The kids, of course, went straight for the pastries. It's amazing how a good breakfast can set the tone for the entire day, especially when you're surrounded by the promise of natural beauty.
With our appetites satisfied, we set off towards Hartnett Falls, one of the three striking waterfalls along the Mersey River. The trail was a delightful mix of gentle descents and lush greenery, a perfect introduction to the Tasmanian wilderness. Farah, ever the adventurous one, led the way, while Imani kept a watchful eye on the trail, pointing out interesting flora and fauna. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of eucalyptus and damp earth. It was a refreshing change from the bustling streets of London, a reminder of the simple joys of nature.
As we approached the falls, the sound of cascading water grew louder, building anticipation for the spectacle that awaited us. And Hartnett Falls did not disappoint. The water plunged 20 meters into a narrow gorge, creating a mesmerizing display of power and beauty. The kids were captivated, their eyes wide with wonder as they watched the water crash against the rocks below. I couldn't resist snapping a few photos, trying to capture the essence of this natural masterpiece. Even Aisha, who usually prefers the comfort of a museum, was impressed, admitting that the falls were truly breathtaking.

The journey is the destination, and today's journey through Cradle Mountain was a testament to the beauty of simplicity and the power of nature.
After spending some time soaking in the beauty of Hartnett Falls, we continued our journey towards New Pelion Hut. The hike was a bit more challenging, with steeper inclines and more rugged terrain. But the views along the way were well worth the effort. We passed through ancient forests, crossed crystal-clear streams, and marveled at the towering peaks that surrounded us. It was a true immersion into the heart of Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park.
We eventually reached New Pelion Hut, the largest alpine hut in the park. It was a welcome sight after our long trek. The hut offered basic but comfortable accommodations, and we quickly settled in, claiming a few bunks for the night. The kids were excited to explore the hut, discovering its various nooks and crannies. I took the opportunity to chat with some of the other hikers, sharing stories and experiences from our respective journeys.

New Pelion Hut is more than just a shelter; it's a community hub, a place where travelers from all walks of life come together to share their love of the outdoors. I met a couple from Germany who were hiking the entire Overland Track, a solo traveler from Japan who was documenting his journey through photography, and a group of local Tasmanians who were simply enjoying a weekend getaway. It was inspiring to see so many people connected by their passion for nature.
As the sun began to set, we gathered in the hut's common area, sharing a simple but satisfying meal of pasta and vegetables. The gas heater in the hut provided a welcome source of warmth, and the atmosphere was cozy and convivial. We spent the evening playing cards, telling stories, and simply enjoying each other's company. It was a reminder that the best moments in life are often the simplest ones, shared with the people we love in a beautiful setting.
Before turning in for the night, I stepped outside to take one last look at the stars. The sky was ablaze with a million twinkling lights, a breathtaking display of cosmic beauty. I felt a sense of peace and gratitude wash over me, a feeling that I was exactly where I was supposed to be. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day.
Today’s adventure wouldn’t have been complete without experiencing the local flavors of Tasmania. For lunch, we stopped at Tullah Lakeside Bar & Grill. The kids enjoyed some classic burgers while Aisha tried the fresh salad. I opted for the Tasmanian rib eye fillet. The Tullah Lakeside Bar & Grill has a beautiful view of the lake too.

As the day wound down, we made a quick stop at The Top Pub in Tullah. It was a great way to experience the local atmosphere and unwind after a long day of hiking. The kids enjoyed some non-alcoholic beverages while Aisha and I sampled some local Tasmanian beers. It was a perfect end to a day filled with adventure and discovery.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we plan to explore Reynolds Falls and Frog Flats. I’m excited to see what other natural wonders Cradle Mountain has in store for us. We’ll be having breakfast at Hungry Wombat Cafe, lunch at Villarett Gardens, and dinner at Tavern Bar & Bistro. I’m also planning to visit Reliquaire, a local shop, to pick up some souvenirs.
As I reflect on today's journey, I'm reminded of the importance of embracing the unexpected, of stepping outside of our comfort zones and allowing ourselves to be amazed by the world around us. Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park has a way of stripping away the distractions and revealing the essence of what truly matters: connection, appreciation, and a sense of wonder. And as we continue our adventure, I'm excited to see what other lessons this remarkable place has in store for us.
Perhaps I will find some oysters, as I have read that some species of oyster are commonly consumed and are regarded as a delicacy in some localities. I will have to be sure to inquire at one of the local restaurants to see if they have any on the menu.
I am also reminded of the trees in Leicester that are being felled because they have become infected with a harmful fungal spore that turns them black. It is a reminder that we must take care of our environment and protect it from harmful diseases. I am grateful that the trees in Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park are healthy and thriving.
