A Solo Adventure to Ghana's Wli Nature Reserve

A Day of Primates and Plunging Water

Today was a day of incredible contrasts, a blend of playful wildlife encounters and the awe-inspiring power of nature. It’s days like these that remind me why I embarked on this solo journey in the first place – to witness the raw beauty of our planet and connect with its diverse inhabitants. Leaving my temporary campsite near Wli, I was excited to see what the day would bring, and Ghana certainly didn't disappoint.

My day started with a hearty breakfast at ANTI BEE WAKYE SPECIAL. I fueled up with some traditional Ghanaian wakye, a flavorful rice and beans dish. It was the perfect way to prepare for the adventures ahead. After breakfast, I made my way to the Tourist Reception Office for the Wli Agumatsa Waterfall. I wanted to get an early start and make the most of the day exploring the falls. The air was thick with humidity, but the anticipation of seeing West Africa's tallest waterfall spurred me onward.

The hike to the falls was invigorating. The trail wound through lush forest, alive with the sounds of exotic birds and insects. I could feel the spray of the waterfall long before I saw it, a refreshing mist that hinted at the spectacle to come. And then, there it was – Wli Waterfall, cascading down the cliff face in a thunderous display of natural power. I chose to view the lower falls, as the hike to the upper falls is quite strenuous and I wanted to conserve some energy for the Monkey Sanctuary. The sheer scale of the waterfall was breathtaking, and I spent a good hour simply soaking in the view and capturing its beauty with my camera. I even took a moment to journal my thoughts, reflecting on the immensity of nature and my place within it. It's moments like these that make me feel truly alive, connected to something far greater than myself.

After the awe-inspiring experience at Wli Waterfall, I set off for the Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary And Cultural Village. The drive was scenic, passing through small villages and verdant landscapes. I arrived at Tafi Atome eager to meet the sanctuary's famous residents.

As I entered the sanctuary, I was immediately greeted by the playful antics of the Mona monkeys. These primates are considered sacred by the local community, and it's easy to see why. They are intelligent, curious creatures, and they seemed just as interested in me as I was in them. I spent the afternoon observing the monkeys in their natural habitat, learning about their behavior and the sanctuary's conservation efforts. The sanctuary is a testament to community-led conservation, and it was inspiring to see how the local people have worked to protect these animals and their forest home.

I learned that for over two centuries, the monkeys living in the forest around Tafi-Atome have been considered sacred, believed to be messengers from the gods. In 1996, the village started making greater efforts to protect the forest and monkeys, also offering tours to visitors. It was created by a coalition of villagers, public institutions, and NGOs.

The cultural aspect of Tafi Atome was equally enriching. I had the opportunity to engage with local artisans, witness traditional weaving demonstrations, and listen to the rhythmic beats of Ewe music. It was a vibrant and immersive experience, offering a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the region. I even picked up a small, hand-woven basket as a souvenir, a reminder of the day's cultural exchange.

For lunch, I stopped by Odo Ho Special Fufu Joint, where I enjoyed a delicious plate of fufu, a staple Ghanaian dish made from pounded yam or cassava. It was a hearty and satisfying meal, and the perfect complement to the day's adventures. I was struck by the warmth and hospitality of the local people. Their smiles were infectious, and their willingness to share their culture was truly heartwarming.

Before heading back to my campsite, I made a quick stop at Jewel's Gift shop. I wanted to find a small memento of my time in Wli, something to remind me of the incredible experiences I'd had. I found a beautiful, hand-carved wooden sculpture of a monkey, a perfect symbol of the day's adventures.

As the sun began to set, I made my way to Lemon Beach Restaurant for dinner. The restaurant was situated right on the beach, and the sound of the waves provided a soothing backdrop to my meal. I enjoyed a freshly caught fish, grilled to perfection, and reflected on the day's events. From the thundering Wli Waterfall to the playful monkeys of Tafi Atome, it had been a day of unforgettable encounters with nature and culture.

Reflecting on my background, growing up in Tanzania, I've always felt a deep connection to nature and wildlife. My work as an archivist specializing in African history at the British Library has further deepened my appreciation for the continent's rich cultural heritage. Today's experiences at Wli Waterfall and Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary were a perfect blend of these two passions, a reminder of the importance of preserving both our natural and cultural treasures.

Tomorrow, I am planning on visiting Umbrella Rock [Ifadzato South District]. I'm looking forward to another day of exploration and discovery in this beautiful corner of Ghana. I am also planning on stopping by The Republic Bar & Grill in the evening, to mingle with the locals.

As I settle into my tent for the night, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences of the day. This solo journey to Ghana is proving to be everything I hoped for and more – a chance to connect with nature, immerse myself in a new culture, and discover a deeper understanding of myself and the world around me.
