Yakushima's Hidden Stories
Today was about more than just seeing the sights; it was about understanding the soul of Yakushima. After days spent hiking through ancient forests, I wanted to delve deeper into the island’s history, geography, and culture. It was a day of learning, reflection, and a little bit of local flavor, perfectly rounding out my Yakushima adventure.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at the Yakushima Airport Restaurant. While airport food isn't usually something to write home about, this was a surprisingly delightful experience. Fuelled up, I made my way to the Yakushima Visitor Centre. It's a great place to start for anyone wanting to get a better understanding of the island. The centre offers a wealth of information about Yakushima's unique ecosystem, its history, and the conservation efforts in place to protect it. I spent a couple of hours exploring the exhibits, learning about the island's flora and fauna, and the geological processes that shaped its dramatic landscape. It was fascinating to see how Yakushima's unique environment has fostered such incredible biodiversity. The staff were incredibly helpful, answering my questions and providing insights into the best ways to explore the island respectfully.

From the Visitor Centre, I joined the Yakushima Geographic Tour. I was excited about this, as I'd read great reviews online, and it seemed like the perfect way to gain a deeper understanding of the island's geography and cultural significance. The tour, led by a local guide, took us to various points of interest around the island, each offering a different perspective on Yakushima's natural and human history. We explored coastal areas, learned about the island's unique rock formations, and visited small villages where traditional ways of life are still preserved. The guide shared stories passed down through generations, bringing the island's history to life.

The best journey in life is the journey inward.
One of the highlights of the tour was learning about the impact of the island’s heavy rainfall – apparently, it rains 35 days a month here! I learned how the abundant water nourishes the forests and creates the many stunning waterfalls that Yakushima is known for. It was also interesting to hear about the challenges faced by the local communities in balancing tourism with the need to preserve the island's fragile ecosystem. The tour really opened my eyes to the complexities of Yakushima, making me appreciate its beauty even more.

In the evening, I decided to check out the local nightlife. I ventured to hiyoriya for dinner, a restaurant recommended by several locals. The atmosphere was cozy and intimate, with soft lighting and traditional Japanese décor. I tried some local dishes, including flying fish sashimi, a Yakushima specialty. It was an adventure for my taste buds, and I enjoyed every bite! Later, I found myself at Cafe&Bar RainTree. This place was a surprise! It was a quirky mix of a café and a karaoke bar, with a lively atmosphere and friendly staff. I even plucked up the courage to sing a couple of songs – my rendition of a classic Puerto Rican salsa tune was definitely a hit (or at least, people were very polite!). It was a fun way to unwind and celebrate my last night on this magical island. I met some interesting people, both locals and fellow travelers, and we shared stories and laughter over drinks. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and discovery.

As I sit here reflecting on my day, I feel a deep sense of gratitude for the experiences I’ve had in Yakushima. This island has touched my soul in a way I never expected. From the ancient forests to the warm hospitality of the locals, every moment has been a gift. I'm already looking forward to my final day here, where I plan to visit the Yakushima-todai Lighthouse and the Sunset Hill Observation Deck. I'm also hoping to pick up a few souvenirs at the local shop, Yakusugi-ya, before heading back to Berlin.
Before heading back to my guesthouse, I took a moment to appreciate the night sky. The stars here seem brighter, more vibrant, perhaps because of the island's remote location and lack of light pollution. I made a mental note to bring my travel pillow next time, as I'd forgotten it at home and could have used it on the long ferry ride.
Tomorrow marks the end of my solo journey in Yakushima, and I'm already feeling a pang of sadness. This island has captured my heart, and I know I'll be back someday. But for now, I'm grateful for the memories I've made and the lessons I've learned. Yakushima has taught me the importance of connecting with nature, embracing new experiences, and appreciating the beauty of simplicity. As I prepare to leave this enchanted forest, I carry with me a piece of its magic, ready to share its stories with the world.
