Day 15: Farewell to Yakushima: Reflecting on a Mystical Solo Journey
Concluding my solo adventure in Yakushima with lighthouse views, sunset reflections, and heartfelt goodbyes to this magical island.
Saying Goodbye to Yakushima
As my journey in Yakushima draws to a close, I find myself filled with a mix of emotions. This island, with its ancient forests and serene landscapes, has captured a piece of my heart. It's a bittersweet feeling, leaving behind a place that has offered so much peace and inspiration. Today was all about soaking in the last moments, revisiting favorite spots, and preparing for the journey back to Berlin. I’m excited to share the final chapter of my Yakushima adventure.
The day began with a simple breakfast at Yakushima Airport Restaurant. It was nothing fancy, but it was hearty and did the trick. I needed the fuel for my last day of exploration. I enjoyed the last cup of Japanese coffee for a while, while watching the small planes take off, knowing I will be on one of them soon. I took some time to reflect on my time here, all the amazing things I have seen and done, and all the amazing food I have tasted.
My first stop was the Yakushima-todai Lighthouse. The drive there was beautiful, with winding roads offering glimpses of the coastline. When I arrived, the lighthouse stood tall and white against the clear blue sky. The views from the top were breathtaking. I could see the vast Pacific Ocean stretching out before me, and the rugged coastline of Yakushima curving away in both directions. I spent some time taking photos and just breathing in the fresh sea air. It was a perfect spot for contemplation, a moment to appreciate the beauty and solitude of the island. The Yakushima-todai Lighthouse is one of the few in the area and offers a serene and peaceful experience.

I took some time to walk around the lighthouse. The scent of the sea and the sound of waves crashing against the rocky shore filled the air. It was so calming and peaceful. I explored the nearby hiking trails, enjoying the rich biodiversity of the island. The ancient cedar trees were majestic and awe-inspiring. I was so glad I had the chance to see this beautiful place before leaving Yakushima.
From the lighthouse, I drove to やくすぎ屋, a local shop known for its Yakusugi crafts. I wanted to pick up a few souvenirs for friends and family back home. The shop was filled with beautiful wooden items, from small trinkets to larger pieces of furniture. I chose a few small gifts, each one a reminder of the island's unique beauty and craftsmanship. I even got a small piece for myself, a little carving of a cedar tree to remind me of the ancient forests I had explored.

For lunch, I decided to try Smiley, a cafe I had read about that was known for its cozy atmosphere and delicious sandwiches. It was located near the Anbo river mouth and had a comfortable atmosphere with wooden furniture and a pleasant view of the breakwater. I ordered a sandwich and a coffee, and sat by the window, enjoying the view. The sandwich was delicious, and the coffee was strong and flavorful. It was the perfect place to relax and recharge before my next adventure.

The afternoon was dedicated to the Sunset Hill Observation Deck. I wanted to catch one last Yakushima sunset before I left. I arrived early to secure a good spot, and as the sun began to dip below the horizon, the sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant hues. The colors reflected off the surrounding waters, creating a breathtaking scene. I took countless photos, trying to capture the beauty of the moment, but I knew that no photo could truly do it justice. The experience was magical, a perfect ending to my time on the island. Sunset Hill Observation Deck is a roadside observation deck with a nice view over the east china sea.

As I watched the sunset, I thought about all the things I had experienced during my time in Yakushima. I had hiked through ancient forests, explored rugged coastlines, and discovered hidden waterfalls. I had connected with nature in a way that I had never done before, and I had learned a lot about myself in the process. This solo journey had been a transformative experience, one that I would cherish for years to come.
Sometimes, the most profound journeys are those we take alone, allowing us to connect deeply with ourselves and the world around us.
Dinner was at Yakushima Gallery Restaurant, a place known for its delicious food and great service. I decided to try the flying fish ramen, a local specialty. The ramen was flavorful and satisfying, a perfect way to end my culinary adventures on the island. The restaurant had a cozy and artistic ambiance, adding to the overall experience. After dinner, I took one last walk along the beach, listening to the waves and breathing in the night air. I felt a sense of peace and contentment, knowing that I had made the most of my time in Yakushima.
