A Day of Discovery on Capri

Our morning started with a hearty breakfast at Januarius. I grabbed a quick coffee and cornetto before we headed out. The plan was to visit the Certosa San Giacomo Capri, a Carthusian monastery with a rich history. The walk to the monastery was beautiful, with winding streets and stunning views of the island. It was a bit of a climb, but definitely worth it. The monastery itself was so peaceful, a stark contrast to the bustling streets of Naples. As I wandered through the cloisters and gardens, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of tranquility wash over me. The architecture was stunning, and the history of the place was palpable. I learned that the monastery was founded in the 14th century and has served various purposes over the centuries, including being used as a barracks and a prison. Now, it houses a museum and is used for cultural events. I could easily spend hours here but we had a full day ahead of us.

Next on the list was Villa Jovis, the ancient Roman palace built by Emperor Tiberius. Getting there involved another uphill walk, this time even more challenging than the first. But the views along the way were simply breathtaking. The island of Capri is so picturesque, with its rugged coastline, turquoise waters, and lush vegetation. I made sure to bring my camera to capture it all. When we finally reached Villa Jovis, I was in awe. The palace ruins are perched on a cliff overlooking the sea, offering panoramic views that stretched as far as the eye could see. It was easy to imagine what life must have been like for Emperor Tiberius, ruling the Roman Empire from this secluded paradise. The villa is massive, spanning several terraces and levels. I explored the remains of the living quarters, administrative areas, and reception halls, each with its own unique charm. The engineering feats of the Romans were impressive, especially the intricate system for collecting rainwater, which was essential for supplying the palace with fresh water.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quiet corners of the world, away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

After a morning of exploring historical sites, it was time for lunch. We headed to La Scialuppa Restaurant, nestled in Borgo Marinari. It was a delightful spot overlooking the harbor. I decided to try the seafood pasta, which was incredibly fresh and flavorful. The restaurant is known for its seafood, and I could definitely taste why. The paccheri alla Sasà, with prawns, octopus, and mussels, was a standout dish. My friends and I shared a bottle of local white wine, savoring the delicious food and stunning views. It was the perfect way to recharge before the next part of our adventure.

As the sun began to set, we decided to experience Capri's nightlife. We made our way to Hype Club, known for its lively atmosphere and great music. Now, I'm not usually one for clubbing, but I was curious to see what Capri had to offer. The club was buzzing with energy, and the music was infectious. I grabbed a drink and joined my friends on the dance floor. It was a fun and carefree way to end the day, letting loose and enjoying the vibrant atmosphere. I even met a few locals who shared some interesting stories about the island. Salsa dancing in Berlin is great, but dancing in Capri is a different experience altogether!

Before heading back to our accommodation, we took a stroll along the Marina Grande, soaking in the sights and sounds of the evening. The harbor was alive with activity, with boats coming and going, and people enjoying the cool night air. The lights of the town twinkled in the distance, creating a magical ambiance. I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience this beautiful island with my friends. It's moments like these that make travel so rewarding.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm filled with anticipation for what tomorrow holds. We will be heading back to the mainland for another day trip. Tomorrow, we are planning to explore the Royal Palace of Caserta and the Museo e Real Bosco di Capodimonte. I've heard great things about both places and I am excited to delve into more of the region's history and culture. The Royal Palace, in particular, sounds incredible. I can't wait to see its opulent interiors and sprawling gardens. It's going to be another early start, but I know it will be worth it. I'm also looking forward to trying some local cuisine in Caserta. I’ve heard that Agriturismo il Turuziello is a great spot for lunch, offering traditional dishes made with fresh, local ingredients. And of course, we’ll need to find a good place for dinner in the evening. I've got my eye on Mimì alla Ferrovia, which is supposed to be a classic Neapolitan restaurant. I'm eager to see what culinary delights await us!

Even though I forgot my travel adapter and sunscreen, I'm still managing to have an incredible time. It's a good reminder that sometimes the best experiences come when you least expect them. As I settle in for the night, I'm already dreaming of tomorrow's adventures. Naples and its surrounding areas continue to surprise and delight me at every turn. I can't wait to share more stories with you all soon!
