A Fond Farewell to Naples

As my two-week adventure in Naples draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences I’ve had. From the bustling streets to the historical landmarks and, of course, the mouthwatering cuisine, Naples has truly captured my heart. Today, on April 18, 2025, I embarked on a final day of exploration with my friends, determined to soak in as much of this vibrant city as possible before heading back to Berlin.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Baccalaria. I’d heard so much about their unique take on traditional Neapolitan cuisine, especially their cod-based dishes, and I was eager to try it out. The restaurant was charming, with a cozy atmosphere that made us feel right at home. I decided on a classic Neapolitan breakfast, a sfogliatella and a strong espresso. The pastry was flaky and sweet, perfectly complementing the bitter coffee. It was the perfect way to start our last day, fueling us for the adventures ahead. Baccalaria is known for its elegant table settings and attention to detail, and I can see why it has such a strong reputation. The staff were friendly, and the ambiance was perfect for a relaxed morning meal. I made a mental note to try their lunch or dinner menu next time I'm in Naples.

The beauty of Naples lies not just in its landmarks, but in the everyday moments that capture its vibrant soul.

Our first stop was the Cappella Palatina del Maschio Angioino, also known as the Angevin Keep. This 13th-century castle, known to locals as Maschio Angioino, is an iconic symbol of Naples. The Cappella Palatina, or Palatine Chapel, is the only surviving element of the original fourteenth-century Angevin castle. As we approached the castle, its imposing structure dominated the Piazza Municipio. The architecture was stunning, a mix of Gothic and Renaissance styles that spoke volumes about the city’s rich history. Inside the chapel, I was immediately struck by the intricate frescoes and the sense of history that permeated the air. The guide explained that the chapel had been frescoed with scenes from the Old and New Testament by Giotto. Although only fragments remain, they offered a glimpse into the artistic grandeur of the 14th century. The chapel's marble portal, crafted by Andrea dell'Aquila, and the rose window, designed by the Catalan Matteo Forcimanya, were particularly impressive. The Cappella Palatina has served various purposes over the centuries, including hosting significant events such as the abdication of Pope Celestine V in 1294. Walking through the halls, I couldn't help but feel a connection to the countless historical figures who had walked these same floors. The view from the ramparts was breathtaking, offering a panoramic vista of the city and the sea. It was a perfect spot to reflect on the layers of history that make Naples so unique. The Maschio Angioino stands as a testament to Naples' resilience and grandeur, a must-visit for anyone exploring the city's cultural heritage.

Next, we made our way to the Complesso Monumentale di Santa Chiara. This monumental complex is one of the most significant religious and historical landmarks in Naples. Commissioned in 1310 by Robert of Anjou, King of Naples, and his wife, Queen Sancha of Majorca, the complex was intended as a royal burial site and a place of worship for the Franciscan order. Situated in the heart of the city's historic center, this monumental complex is a stunning blend of architecture, history, and art. Renowned for its iconic Majolica Cloister, Gothic church, and on-site archaeological museum, it offers visitors a profound glimpse into Naples' rich cultural heritage. The basilica has a Latin cross layout, with a spacious nave and a serene ambiance. Inside, visitors can marvel at the tombs of Robert of Anjou, Queen Sancha, and other members of the Neapolitan royal family. The Majolica Cloister is decorated with over 64 vibrant hand-painted majolica tiles. The vibrant colors and intricate designs depicted scenes of daily life, landscapes, and religious symbols, creating a serene and visually stunning space. Walking through the cloisters, I felt a sense of peace and tranquility wash over me, a welcome respite from the bustling city outside. For lunch, we chose Ristorante Amici Miei, a place recommended by several locals. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, and the staff greeted us with warm smiles. I opted for the fettuccine ai funghi porcini, a classic Italian dish that I knew I had to try before leaving Naples. The pasta was perfectly cooked, and the creamy mushroom sauce was rich and flavorful. My friends tried the seafood dishes, which they raved about. The service was excellent, and the overall experience was delightful. It was the perfect spot to relax and recharge after a morning of sightseeing. I’d definitely recommend Ristorante Amici Miei to anyone looking for authentic Neapolitan cuisine in a welcoming setting.

After lunch, we decided to do some last-minute souvenir shopping at Nel Cuore di Napoli. This charming shop offered a wide array of local crafts, artisanal products, and unique souvenirs. I picked up a few small gifts for my family and friends back in Berlin, as well as a couple of items for myself to remember my trip. The shopkeepers were friendly and helpful, offering insights into the history and craftsmanship behind each item. It was a great way to support local artisans and bring a piece of Naples back home with me. The shop is located in a vibrant area of the city, making it a perfect stop during an afternoon stroll.

As the day wound down, we stopped by Cammarota Spritz for a pre-dinner drink. This lively bar is known for its incredibly affordable Aperol Spritzes, and it was the perfect spot to soak in the local atmosphere. The bar was buzzing with activity, locals and tourists alike mingling and enjoying the cheap and cheerful drinks. I ordered a small Aperol Spritz for just 1 euro and joined the lively crowd. The atmosphere was infectious, and it was a great way to unwind after a busy day. Cammarota Spritz is a must-visit for anyone looking for a fun and budget-friendly aperitivo experience in Naples. I felt a bit like I was back in my student days in Glasgow, enjoying cheap drinks and a jovial atmosphere.

Our final meal in Naples was at Palazzo Petrucci Ristorante, a Michelin-starred restaurant that promised a memorable culinary experience. The restaurant is nestled in the historic Villa Donn'Anna Palace overlooking Posillipo Bay. The setting was stunning, with panoramic views of the bay and Mount Vesuvius in the distance. The ambiance was elegant and refined, perfect for a special occasion. I opted for the tasting menu, which featured a selection of the chef’s signature dishes. Each course was a work of art, beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. The menu had a heavy emphasis on raw seafood, and I went for the starter of chopped lobster and prawn tartare with ham of lamb and a fennel and lemon sauce. The service was impeccable, and the sommelier paired each course with a perfect wine. It was a truly unforgettable dining experience and a fitting end to my culinary adventures in Naples. The restaurant’s commitment to sustainable tourism and ecotourism was evident in every aspect of the establishment, from the locally sourced ingredients to the dedication to preserving the region’s culinary heritage.

As I packed my bags, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of gratitude for the incredible experiences I’ve had in Naples. From the historical landmarks to the delicious food and the warm hospitality of the locals, this city has truly captured my heart. I know that I will cherish these memories for years to come, and I can’t wait to return to Naples someday soon. Although my friends will be heading back to Berlin with me, I know that the memories we made together in Naples will last a lifetime. This trip has only strengthened our bond, and I’m grateful for their companionship and shared adventures. Until next time, Naples, arrivederci!
