Solo Adventure in Chapada Diamantina: Exploring Brazil's Natural Wonders
Day 14: Discovering Chapada's Hidden Gems: Roncador and Samuel Falls
A day of tranquil canoe rides and refreshing waterfall hikes in Chapada Diamantina, unveiling the region's serene beauty and local artistry.
A Day of Rivers and Falls
Today was a day of gentle exploration and hidden paradises. Leaving behind the familiar trails, I ventured into the heart of Chapada Diamantina National Park to discover the serene beauty of Roncador and the cascading heights of Cachoeira do Samuel. It was a day that reminded me why I traded the bustling streets of Berlin for the raw, untamed landscapes of Brazil.
My morning started with a hearty breakfast at Restaurante Sabor da Serra. Fueling up with some local delicacies was essential before embarking on today’s adventure. The restaurant, with its stunning views of the Serra, is quickly becoming a favorite of mine. After breakfast, I set off towards Roncador. The journey itself was an experience, driving through the winding roads that cut through the park's vast expanse. The air was fresh, carrying the scent of damp earth and blooming wildflowers. The weather in Chapada Diamantina in May is moderately humid, which was perfect for a day of hiking and being close to the water. The sun was out, but it wasn't too hot, making the conditions ideal for exploring.
Roncador was nothing short of magical. To get there, I traveled to Vila do Remanso, where I hopped into a canoe for a peaceful ride down the Rio Santo Antônio. The water was so clear, I could see the riverbed below, teeming with life. The canoe glided effortlessly, and the silence was broken only by the gentle lapping of water against the boat and the occasional call of a native bird. It felt like entering another world, a hidden sanctuary where time stood still. This area is known as the 'mini Pantanal' of Chapada Diamantina, and it truly lived up to the name.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures are not about conquering a summit, but about immersing yourself in the tranquility of nature.
After the canoe ride, I hiked a short distance to the Roncador River. The river is a series of natural pools and small waterfalls, perfect for a refreshing dip. The water was cool and invigorating, washing away any lingering stress. I spent a good hour swimming and basking in the sun, feeling utterly relaxed and rejuvenated. The Roncador River marks the boundary between the municipalities of Lençóis and Andaraí, and it’s accessed by different routes. I chose the one that starts from the Quilombola community of Remanso, which allowed me to experience a bit of the local culture.
For lunch, I packed a simple picnic to enjoy amidst the natural beauty of Chapada Diamantina National Park. There’s something incredibly satisfying about eating surrounded by such stunning scenery. After Roncador, it was time to head to Cachoeira do Samuel. This waterfall is located in Andaraí, and the journey there took me through some of the park's most remote and untouched landscapes. The drive along the Estrada Velha do Garimpo, an old mining road, was filled with history and stories. It's incredible to think that this area was once bustling with miners searching for diamonds, and now it's a protected natural paradise.
The hike to Cachoeira do Samuel was a bit more challenging than the morning’s canoe trip, a moderate trek of 11 km. The trail wound through dense forests and rocky terrain, requiring a bit of scrambling in some places. The anticipation grew with each step, fueled by the sound of the cascading water getting louder and louder. Finally, after about two hours of hiking, I arrived at the base of the waterfall. Cachoeira do Samuel is an impressive sight, with water plunging down from a height of 100 meters. The pool at the bottom was perfect for a swim, and I couldn't resist taking a dip in the cool, clear water. The waterfall is surrounded by lush vegetation, creating a secluded and serene atmosphere.

Before heading back to my accommodation, I stopped by Artesanato Natureza Criativa in Mucugê. This charming shop is filled with unique, handcrafted items made by local artisans. I picked up a few souvenirs, including a beautiful piece of pottery and a small woven tapestry. Supporting local businesses is important to me, and it’s a great way to take a piece of Chapada Diamantina home with me.
Back in my room, I enjoyed a simple dinner. I decided to eat at Restaurante Sabor da Serra again, since it was closer to my accommodation. As I sit here, reflecting on the day, I feel a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience such incredible natural beauty. Tomorrow is my last day in Chapada Diamantina, and I plan to make the most of it by visiting Cachoeira da Fumacinha. I’ve heard it’s a challenging hike, but the reward is well worth the effort. And perhaps, in the evening, I'll celebrate the end of my trip with a drink at Diamantino Art&bar in Mucugê.
