Chasing Waterfalls and Touching the Sky

Today was a day of embracing the raw, untamed beauty of Chapada dos Veadeiros. We ventured to stunning waterfalls and ascended to breathtaking heights, all while soaking in the unique energy of this incredible place. It was a day filled with challenges, rewards, and moments of pure awe, experiences that I am eager to share with you.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at La Parrilla. As usual, Fatou was up before everyone, eager to get going. I appreciate her enthusiasm, even if I prefer a slower start. The breakfast was simple but satisfying, fueling us for the day's adventures. Ebrima, of course, complained that they didn't have any of his favorite German bread, but he quickly perked up when he saw the fresh fruit.

Our first stop was Cachoeira dos Arcanjos. The drive there took us through the charming village of Moinho, about 14 kilometers from Alto Paraíso. The road was a bit rough, typical of the area, but nothing our rented vehicle couldn't handle. As we approached, the anticipation grew. I'd heard so much about these waterfalls, and I was eager to see them for myself. The entrance fee was reasonable, and thankfully, children didn't have to pay.

The hike to Cachoeira dos Arcanjos was moderate, with a few steep sections that required some careful footing. Fatou, ever the cautious one, took her time, while Ebrima bounded ahead, eager to reach the water. The trail wound through lush vegetation, and the air was filled with the sounds of birds and insects. It was a welcome change from the noise and bustle of Bielefeld.

The first waterfall we encountered was Cachoeira dos Anjos. It was a beautiful sight, with water cascading down about 30 meters into a clear, inviting pool. The rock formations around the waterfall created a dramatic backdrop, and the water was refreshingly cold. Ebrima immediately jumped in, while Fatou and I dipped our toes in, enjoying the cool spray on our faces. We spent some time here, soaking in the tranquility and snapping photos.

We then continued to Cachoeira dos Arcanjos, which was a bit more challenging to reach. The trail became steeper and rockier, and we had to use ropes in some sections to navigate the terrain. But the effort was well worth it. Cachoeira dos Arcanjos was even more majestic than the first, with water cascading down a series of natural steps into a larger, deeper pool. The water had a slightly darker hue, but it was still incredibly clean and inviting. Ebrima, of course, couldn't resist another swim. Fatou and I sat on the rocks, marveling at the beauty of the scene. It was a moment of pure bliss, a reminder of why we embarked on this journey in the first place.

Sometimes, the most rewarding experiences are the ones that require a little extra effort.

After our refreshing dip, we continued our journey to Cachoeira do Sertão Zen. Unlike many attractions in Chapada dos Veadeiros, Sertão Zen is located within the Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park itself and is free to enter. The trail to Sertão Zen is known for being a longer and more challenging hike. The new trail is approximately 8.5 kilometers long and passes through a completely wild area. Given the length and difficulty, and knowing my family's varying levels of hiking enthusiasm, I was a bit hesitant. However, Ebrima was insistent, and Fatou, ever the supportive wife, agreed that we should give it a try. So, with a mix of excitement and trepidation, we set off.

The hike to Sertão Zen was indeed challenging. The trail wound through the cerrado, with its unique vegetation and panoramic views. The altitude reached about 1,450 meters, adding to the physical exertion. There were steep climbs and rocky descents, testing our endurance and agility. At times, the trail wasn't well-marked, and we had to rely on our instincts and a bit of luck to stay on course.

Despite the challenges, the hike was incredibly rewarding. The scenery was breathtaking, with views of rolling hills and distant plateaus. We passed through areas that resembled Japanese Zen gardens, with their serene beauty and minimalist landscapes. The air was fresh and clean, and the silence was broken only by the sounds of nature. It was a truly immersive experience, a chance to connect with the natural world and escape the stresses of modern life.

Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, we reached Cachoeira do Sertão Zen. The waterfall was stunning, cascading down from a height of 150 meters. The water was crystal clear and inviting, and we eagerly jumped in for a swim. The pool at the base of the waterfall was deep and refreshing, and we spent a blissful hour swimming and relaxing in the cool water.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, we reluctantly began our hike back. The return journey was just as challenging as the ascent, but we were buoyed by the memories of the beautiful waterfall and the sense of accomplishment we felt. We made it back to the trailhead just as darkness fell, exhausted but exhilarated.

Our final adventure for the day was Pico Pouso Alto. Being the highest point in the Central Plateau at 1,676 meters, it promised a panoramic view of the region. Fortunately, it's easily accessible, located right off the highway. I was a bit weary from our earlier hikes, but the allure of the view was too strong to resist. The drive to Pico Pouso Alto was uneventful, and we soon found ourselves at the base of the peak. The hike to the summit was short but steep, and we had to scramble over rocks and through dense vegetation to reach the top.

As we ascended, the views became increasingly spectacular. We could see for miles in every direction, with the rolling hills and plateaus of Chapada dos Veadeiros stretching out before us. The sun was beginning to set, casting a golden glow over the landscape. It was a truly magical moment, a chance to appreciate the vastness and beauty of the natural world.

At the summit, we took some time to soak in the view and snap photos. Ebrima, of course, climbed to the highest point, while Fatou and I found a comfortable spot to sit and watch the sunset. The air was crisp and cool, and the silence was broken only by the sound of the wind. It was a moment of pure serenity, a chance to reflect on the day's adventures and appreciate the blessings in our lives.

After descending from Pico Pouso Alto, we were all famished. We decided to treat ourselves to dinner at Zu's Bistro culinária italiana. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, and the aroma of Italian food filled the air. We ordered a variety of dishes, including pasta, pizza, and seafood. The food was delicious, and we devoured every last bite. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.

Before heading back to our accommodation, we made a quick stop at I.S.A Pedras e Artesanatos. Fatou wanted to pick up a few souvenirs for her friends back in Bielefeld. The shop was filled with beautiful stones and handicrafts, and Fatou spent a happy hour browsing the shelves. She eventually settled on a few small trinkets, and we headed back to our pousada, tired but content.

As I sit here writing this, I can't help but feel grateful for the experiences we had today. We saw stunning waterfalls, ascended to breathtaking heights, and connected with the natural world in a way that I never thought possible. It was a day of adventure, challenge, and reward, a day that I will cherish for the rest of my life.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Cachoeira do Segredo, Mirante do Loquinhas, and Carioquinhas. I'm excited to see what these new adventures will bring. And perhaps we'll stop by Dendê na Chapada (Acarajé) for a taste of local flavor. Until then, I bid you goodnight from Chapada dos Veadeiros.

As I reflect on the day, I realize that Chapada dos Veadeiros is more than just a beautiful place. It's a place that challenges you, inspires you, and connects you with something larger than yourself. It's a place that reminds you of the importance of nature, family, and adventure. And it's a place that I will never forget.
