A Day of Discovery

Today was a day of unexpected delights, a journey that took us beyond the caldera's edge and into the heart of Santorini's vibrant soul. From the creative pulse of an arts factory to the savory secrets of sun-dried tomatoes and the cool rhythms of a jazz bar, Santorini revealed a different side of itself, one that resonated deeply with my love for culture and authentic experiences.

Our day began in Pyrgos, where we enjoyed breakfast at Xeporto. Hans ordered a traditional Greek coffee, its rich aroma filling the air. I opted for a yogurt with local honey, a simple yet divine start to the day. Kati, ever the adventurous one, tried a spinach pie, declaring it the best she'd ever had. Fueled and ready, we set off to explore the island's hidden gems.

The first stop was the Santorini Arts Factory, housed in an old tomato processing plant in Vlychada. The location itself was striking, the industrial architecture a stark contrast to the azure sea nearby. As we wandered through the various exhibition spaces, I was struck by the diversity of artistic expression on display. From paintings and sculptures to photography and installations, the Arts Factory showcased the talents of both local and international artists.

Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.

Kati was particularly drawn to a series of abstract paintings, while Hans, with his architect's eye, appreciated the structural elements of the building itself. For me, it was the way the Arts Factory breathed new life into a space that had once been dedicated to a very different kind of production. It was a powerful reminder that creativity can flourish in the most unexpected of places. It seems the SAF is prioritizing the island and its inhabitants by providing immediate access to quality cultural events and educational programs throughout the year. The aim is to promote the island's ancient and modern history, its modern activities as well as the material and cultural goods that it can offer to the thousands of visitors from around the world that it hosts every year.

Next, we delved into Santorini's unique agricultural past at the Tomato Industrial Museum, D. Nomikos. This museum, also located in Vlychada, is dedicated to the history of tomato cultivation and processing on the island. I had no idea that Santorini was once a major producer of tomato paste! The museum is housed in a former tomato paste factory, and the exhibits showcase the machinery, tools, and techniques used in the production process. It's amazing to think that nine factories operated on the island until the late 1950s. The museum highlights the history of tomatoes from Santorini. First-hand stories from local farmers and factory workers are shared in audiovisual presentations, offering a genuine look into the struggles and victories faced by individuals working in the tomato business. We also learned about the unique characteristics of Santorini tomatoes, which are small, sweet, and intensely flavorful due to the island's volcanic soil and arid climate.

After immersing ourselves in tomato history, we were ready for lunch. We headed to Kantouni in Pyrgos, a restaurant recommended for its traditional Greek cuisine and charming atmosphere. The setting was lovely, with tables nestled under the shade of towering eucalyptus trees. We started with zucchini balls, light and crispy, followed by a mix of marinated meats with potatoes – a hearty and satisfying meal. Kati enjoyed a kebab with yogurt, while Hans opted for the kontosouvli pork. The friendly staff and generous portions made it a truly enjoyable experience.

As the afternoon waned, we decided to explore Fira, the island's bustling capital. While the caldera views are undeniably stunning, I was craving something a little different. So, we ventured off the beaten path and sought out Kira Thira Jazz Bar, a cozy spot known for its live music and laid-back vibe. Kira Thira is the oldest bar in Fira. The bar is actually a cave house and it is decorated with a variety of musical instruments. The Kira Thira is a bit of departure from the typical nightclubs in Santorini.

The bar was dimly lit, with walls adorned with musical instruments and vintage posters. A live jazz trio was playing, their music filling the space with soulful melodies. We settled into a corner table, ordered a round of drinks, and let the music wash over us. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploration. I savored a glass of local wine, while Hans enjoyed a beer and Kati, a vibrant Sangria. The atmosphere was electric, a mix of locals and tourists all united by their love of music.

Before heading back to our cottage, we decided to have dinner at Aktaion Restaurant in Firostefani. It is said to be the oldest taverna on the island and it truly is a traditional Greek experience. The restaurant overlooks the Caldera and the Aegean Sea, while serving the finest products from the land and sea of the island of Santorini. We shared a variety of traditional dishes, including moussaka, fava, and grilled octopus. The food was delicious, the service friendly, and the views breathtaking. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm struck by the diversity of experiences that Santorini has to offer. It's not just about the sunsets and the white-washed buildings; it's about the art, the history, the food, and the music. It's about connecting with the island's soul and discovering its hidden gems. And tomorrow, we are off to the Museum of Prehistoric Thera and the Cable car of Santorini, so more adventures await.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Museum of Prehistoric Thera and take a ride on the Cable car of Santorini. I'm particularly excited about the museum, as I'm eager to learn more about the island's ancient history. And of course, I'm always up for a scenic adventure, so the cable car ride should be a treat. Before that, we will have breakfast at Selene Restaurant, lunch at KooKoo Bar Restaurant Sunset Rooftop and dinner at The Athenian House. And if there is time, we might visit Theotokaki Art, a shop I've heard great things about.

Back at our cottage, I sit on the porch, the stars twinkling above me. The air is filled with the scent of jasmine and the distant sound of the sea. I feel grateful for this opportunity to explore Santorini with my family, to create memories that will last a lifetime. And as I drift off to sleep, I dream of art, tomatoes, and jazzy nights.
