Exploring the Mystical Snaefellsnes Peninsula
Day 9: A Farewell to Snaefellsnes: Reflections on Iceland's Magical Peninsula
Reflecting on a journey through Snaefellsnes, Iceland, filled with art, history, and unforgettable culinary experiences. A perfect ending.
Reflections on Snaefellsnes
As our journey through the Snaefellsnes Peninsula draws to a close, I find myself filled with a bittersweet mix of gratitude and nostalgia. Today was a day of reflection, a final immersion into the culture and artistry that defines this magical corner of Iceland. It's hard to believe our nine days here are already over; it feels like just yesterday we were marveling at the dramatic landscapes and breathing in the crisp, clean air.
Our final day began with a hearty breakfast at Hlaðan Veitingahús. I opted for a traditional Icelandic breakfast, eager to savor the local flavors one last time. Hans, ever the architect, enjoyed a more simple meal. Hlaðan Veitingahús is known for its cozy atmosphere and home-cooked meals, making it a perfect start to the day. They had a variety of options, and I ended up having a delicious lamb stew. I was able to admire the surrounding landscapes, which made the experience all the more special. After breakfast, we set out to explore the cultural gems of Stykkishólmur, starting with Vatnasafn.
Discover the Library of Water in Stykkishólmur, a modern art museum that harmoniously merges contemporary art with Iceland's breathtaking landscapes.
Vatnasafn, also known as the Library of Water, is a museum that I found to be very unique. Created by American artist Roni Horn, it houses a collection of water from Iceland's major glaciers. The water is displayed in glass columns, each representing a different glacier. The museum also features audio recordings of locals discussing the weather, adding another layer to the experience.
The architecture of the building itself is very modern and sleek, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes. As we wandered through the exhibits, I was struck by the thoughtfulness and creativity of the installations. The serene atmosphere made it easy to connect with the art on a deeper level. It was a very interesting experience to walk around and see the different waters from the glaciers; some were murky, and some were very clear.
Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
After Vatnasafn, we made our way to the Norwegian House, a regional museum with a rich history. Built in 1832, it was the first two-story wood-frame house in Iceland, constructed with timber imported from Norway. The house now serves as a museum, showcasing the history and culture of the Snaefellsnes region. The first level features art exhibits and a gift shop, while the upper floor offers a glimpse into the house's past.

As we explored the Norwegian House, I was struck by the contrast between the modern art of Vatnasafn and the historical artifacts here. It was fascinating to learn about the people who once lived in this house and the role it played in the community. Hans, with his architectural background, was particularly interested in the construction of the house and the use of Norwegian timber. The Norwegian House provided a window into the past, connecting us to the stories and traditions of this unique region.
For lunch, we decided to try Sjávarkjallarinn, a restaurant recommended for its seafood. Although Sjávarkjallarinn is located in Reykjavik, I had read about it and wanted to try some great seafood before we left Iceland. The restaurant is known for its fusion of Asian flavors with fresh Icelandic fish, and the menu changes frequently. Unfortunately, getting to Reykjavik and back to the peninsula for our other activities proved too difficult, but I still made a mental note to visit next time we're in Iceland. Instead, we found a cozy spot in Stykkishólmur and enjoyed some fresh fish and chips.
In the late afternoon, we stopped by Hjá Góðu Fólki, a charming café and art house in Stykkishólmur. The café works with local produce from Snaefellsnes, using salad, herbs, and flowers from nearby greenhouses. We enjoyed some coffee and homemade pastries, soaking in the cozy atmosphere of the café. The café is known for its warm and welcoming environment, making it a popular spot for both locals and tourists. It was a lovely way to relax and reflect on our journey. I enjoyed a cup of coffee and a slice of traditional Icelandic cake, while Hans admired the local artwork on display. The café provided a perfect ending to our day of exploration.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Hótel Snaefellsnes for our final dinner. The hotel restaurant is known for its traditional Icelandic dinners, using organic ingredients, wines, and beers. We savored each bite, reminiscing about our favorite moments from the trip. The restaurant had a diverse menu with Icelandic cuisine and international favorites. The hotel also provides views of the fairways and greens of the surrounding area. The cozy atmosphere made it the perfect place to celebrate our last night on the peninsula.
