A Day of Iconic Views and Local Brews
Today's adventure was all about capturing the essence of Iceland's beauty and charm. We embraced the iconic landscapes and savored the tastes of the region. It was a day filled with stunning vistas, delightful meals, and the warmth of Icelandic hospitality.
Our day began with the anticipation of witnessing one of Iceland’s most photographed landmarks: Kirkjufell Mountain and its accompanying waterfalls, Kirkjufellsfossar. After a hearty breakfast, we set off, eager to immerse ourselves in this iconic scenery. It's hard to believe this is only the second day of our nine-day adventure around the Snæfellsnes Peninsula with Hans. It already feels like we've seen so much!
As we approached Grundarfjörður, the weather was crisp and clear, perfect for photography. The drive itself was a treat, with the rugged coastline and charming villages providing a constant stream of picturesque views. I made a mental note to remember to charge my camera tonight, as I don't want to miss a single shot! We decided to head to Kirkjufell first.
Kirkjufell, also known as “Church Mountain,” truly lived up to its reputation. Its unique, conical shape dominated the landscape, a testament to the raw, untamed beauty of Iceland. The mountain's geological features were fascinating, with visible strata showcasing layers of lava, sandstone, and tuff. I could see why Danish sailors once called it “Sukkertoppen” (Sugar Top).

To walk in nature is to witness a thousand miracles.
We then strolled towards Kirkjufellsfossar, the series of cascades that complement Kirkjufell so perfectly. The falls weren't massive, but their charm lay in the way they framed the mountain, creating a picture-postcard scene. The water flowed gracefully down the steps, creating a delicate veil against the rugged backdrop. I found myself captivated by the interplay between the falls and the mountain, each enhancing the beauty of the other. I took countless photos, trying to capture the essence of this magical place. Summer is definitely the best time to visit, with the lush greenery providing a vibrant contrast to the cascading water.

After soaking in the views, it was time for a hearty Icelandic breakfast at Samkomuhúsið Arnarstapa. This charming restaurant exuded a cozy, traditional atmosphere. The friendly staff welcomed us warmly, making us feel right at home. I ordered the mashed potatoes with broth and cod, while Hans opted for the classic lamb soup. Both dishes were incredibly flavorful, showcasing the fresh, local ingredients. I savored every bite, feeling the warmth of the soup spread through me. The restaurant also had a selection of local art and crafts, adding to its charm. It was the perfect start to our day, fueling us for the adventures ahead.

I even overheard the Hotel Manager mention that they bake fresh bread and cakes daily!

As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves in Olafsvik, a charming town on the peninsula. We decided to have dinner at Stapinn, a family-run restaurant known for its traditional Icelandic cuisine. The restaurant had a warm and inviting ambiance, and the staff were incredibly friendly. We both opted for seafood dishes, eager to taste the fresh catch of the day. The meal was delicious, and we savored every bite while enjoying the cozy atmosphere. To cap off our day, we decided to visit Kaffi 59, a local bar in Olafsvik. It was a typical diner bar, offering a relaxed atmosphere and a chance to mingle with the locals. We ordered a couple of Icelandic beers and chatted with some friendly locals, learning more about the area and its history. It was a great way to unwind and soak in the local culture. Looking ahead to tomorrow, we plan to explore Rauðfeldsgjá Gorge and Lýsuhóll [insert links to these attractions]. I'm particularly excited about Rauðfeldsgjá Gorge, as I've heard it's a hidden gem with a dramatic, narrow canyon [if possible insert a link to this attraction]. We will be having breakfast at Lýsuhóll, lunch at Hlaðan Veitingahús, and dinner at Arnarstapi Center and Snjófell Restaurant. We might even do some knitting shopping at Kirkjufell knitting.
Today was a reminder of the simple pleasures of travel: breathtaking scenery, delicious food, and the warmth of human connection. As I reflect on our adventures, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to explore this incredible country and share it with all of you. I'm also grateful to be sharing it with Hans. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures!
I forgot to pack a portable charger and binoculars! I'll have to remember to pick those up tomorrow.
