Giants of the Dolomites
Today was a day of embracing the grandeur of the Dolomites. From the moment we woke up, the crisp mountain air filled us with an invigorating energy, ready to explore the natural wonders that awaited. It was a day filled with breathtaking views, delicious food, and unforgettable moments shared with my family. I’m so grateful for these opportunities to connect with nature and with each other, especially as Kati is getting ready to leave the nest soon. It’s moments like these that I know we’ll cherish forever.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Rifugio self-service Serauta. Perched high up, the views were simply stunning, providing a perfect backdrop as we fueled up for our adventures. The reviews were mixed, but we found the warm service to be lovely. It was a self-service style restaurant, but the staff was friendly and the portions were generous. I had a large plate of pasta and Hans enjoyed a hearty beer. After breakfast, our first stop was Parco Naturale Puez Odle.
Explore the beauty of Parco Naturale Puez Odle, a breathtaking natural park in South Tyrol, where adventure and tranquility await in the heart of the Dolomites.
The park itself is a sprawling wonderland of jagged peaks and verdant valleys. As we drove closer, the dramatic spires of the Odle/Geisler Group pierced the sky, reminding us of nature's raw power and artistry. The park spans across almost 11,000 hectares, offering countless trails and paths to explore. We decided on a moderate hike, suitable for the whole family, which took us through meadows dotted with wildflowers and alongside babbling brooks. The air was filled with the scent of pine and damp earth, a fragrance that always brings back memories of my childhood summers in Võru. We spent hours simply wandering, stopping frequently to take photos and soak in the panoramic views. Kati, with her youthful energy, was particularly thrilled, snapping pictures at every turn. Even Hans, who usually prefers the comforts of a well-planned itinerary, seemed to relish the spontaneity of our exploration.
Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.
Next on our itinerary was Passo Cimabanche.
Explore Passo Cimabanche, a stunning mountain pass in the Dolomites, perfect for outdoor adventures, breathtaking views, and authentic Italian culture.
The drive there was an experience in itself, as the roads wound through dramatic mountain passes, each turn revealing a new vista more stunning than the last. As we climbed higher, the landscape transformed, the lush greenery giving way to rocky terrain and snow-capped peaks. Passo Cimabanche, with its stark beauty, felt like a world apart. We parked the car and took a short walk to a viewpoint, where we were rewarded with a breathtaking panorama of the surrounding Dolomites. The air was thin and crisp, carrying with it a sense of invigorating purity. We could see for miles in every direction, the majestic mountains stretching out like ancient sentinels guarding the land. It was a moment of profound peace and connection, a reminder of the humbling power of nature.
Our exploration continued to Cristallo.
Experience the breathtaking beauty of Cristallo in Auronzo di Cadore, a must-visit peak in the Dolomites for nature lovers and adventure seekers.
While we didn't ascend to the very top, as it would have been a bit too strenuous for a family hike, we admired its imposing presence from below. The mountain seemed to loom over us, its jagged peaks piercing the sky like the teeth of some mythical beast. We found a lovely spot near a small lake at the base of Cristallo and decided to stop for a picnic. I had packed some local cheeses, fresh bread, and a bottle of crisp white wine from a local vineyard. We spread out a blanket and enjoyed our simple meal, surrounded by the stunning beauty of the Dolomites. It was a perfect moment of contentment, a reminder of the simple joys of life – good food, good company, and breathtaking scenery.
Lunch was an experience at Dolomites Geyser Restaurant Apres Ski.
Discover exquisite alpine dining at Dolomites Geyser Restaurant Apres Ski in San Giovanni di Fassa – where flavor meets breathtaking views.
This unique restaurant, built partially underground, offered a delightful and modern take on traditional cuisine. The restaurant is located in the Buffaure ski area, and while we didn't come directly from the slopes, we enjoyed the vibrant atmosphere and the delicious food. The contemporary design, combined with the warm and bright environment, created a welcoming space. We started with a selection of local cheeses and cured meats, followed by hearty bowls of pasta and risotto. The flavors were rich and satisfying, a perfect complement to the crisp mountain air. Kati particularly enjoyed the cocktails, while Hans and I savored a bottle of local wine. It was a meal to remember, a culinary highlight of our Dolomites adventure.
As the day began to wind down, we made our way to Rosengarden for a relaxing drink.
Experience the vibrant nightlife at Rosengarden, a charming bar nestled in the stunning Dolomites of Canazei, offering delicious drinks and a warm atmosphere.
This charming bar offered stunning views and a cozy atmosphere. I opted for a glass of local wine, while Hans enjoyed a traditional German beer. Kati, ever the adventurous one, tried a local herbal liqueur. We sat on the terrace, watching as the sun began to set, casting a warm golden glow over the surrounding mountains. The air was filled with a sense of tranquility, a perfect ending to a day of exploration and adventure. It was a moment to reflect on the beauty we had witnessed, the memories we had created, and the bonds we had strengthened as a family.
Dinner was at GIGIO PICOL Baita Ristorante.

This traditional restaurant offered a warm and inviting atmosphere, with hearty, home-style cooking. The reviews were excellent, and we were eager to experience the authentic flavors of the Dolomites. We started with a selection of local appetizers, followed by a hearty main course of grilled meats and vegetables. The food was simple but delicious, cooked with love and care. The portions were generous, and the prices were reasonable. It was a perfect way to end our day, a culinary journey into the heart of the Dolomites. The warm and inviting atmosphere made us feel right at home, and we lingered over our meal, savoring every bite and every moment of togetherness. As we left the restaurant, the stars were beginning to appear in the night sky, twinkling like diamonds scattered across a velvet cloth. It was a magical sight, a fitting end to a day of wonder and adventure.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore Val di Fassa, Sass D'adam, and Cascate Schiavaneis. I’m particularly excited about visiting Val di Fassa, as I’ve heard so much about its stunning landscapes and charming villages. And of course, we’ll be sure to sample some more local cuisine along the way. I wonder what culinary delights await us tomorrow? I can’t wait to find out!
As I sit here now, writing this blog post, I can’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude. Gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty of the Dolomites with my family, gratitude for the delicious food we have enjoyed, and gratitude for the memories we have created. These are the moments that make life worth living, the moments that I will cherish forever. And as I look ahead to tomorrow, I am filled with a sense of excitement and anticipation, eager to discover what new adventures await us in this magical corner of the world.
I am so glad we remembered to pack our hiking boots, travel guidebooks and comfortable clothing. I am slightly annoyed we forgot the sunscreen and first-aid kit, though. I will have to make sure we find some tomorrow. Good thing we fly back home to Leipzig in two days, so we can restock then. It’s always something, isn’t it?
Until tomorrow!
