Family Adventure in the Dolomites: Exploring Italy's Natural Wonders

A Dolomite Dream Realized

After months of anticipation, our family adventure in the Dolomites has officially begun! Leaving Leipzig behind for a week of Italian mountain air felt like stepping into a dream. The journey itself was smooth, with our flight into Venice followed by a scenic drive that offered tantalizing glimpses of the majestic peaks awaiting us. The kids were buzzing with excitement, and even Hans, ever the pragmatist, couldn't help but be impressed by the views unfolding outside the car window.



Our first day was packed with exploration, starting with a hearty breakfast at Rifugio Fuciade. The rifugio itself was charming, with a rustic feel that immediately made us feel at home. We fueled up with homemade bread and jams, local cheeses, and cold cuts. Kati, of course, went straight for the pastries, while Hans and I savored the strong Italian coffee. It was the perfect start to a day of hiking and sightseeing.

With our bellies full and spirits high, we set off to tackle Forca Rossa. The trek was invigorating, with the crisp mountain air filling our lungs. The trails were well-maintained, and the scenery was simply stunning. Towering peaks, lush meadows, and glimpses of distant villages kept us captivated every step of the way. I made sure to take tons of pictures, trying to capture the grandeur of the landscape. I want to make sure I remember every detail of this trip. I have a feeling it is going to be one of our best family trips ever.

After conquering Forca Rossa, we were ready for a change of pace, so we headed to Cascate di Barezze. The hike to the waterfalls was relatively easy. It was perfect for a leisurely afternoon stroll. The sound of the cascading water grew louder as we approached, and soon we were greeted by the sight of the Barezze waterfalls. The water cascaded down the rocks, creating a refreshing mist that cooled us down after our earlier hike. The kids were fascinated by the power of the falls, and we spent a good hour simply admiring their beauty. We took some photos here as well, of course. Hans even managed to capture a few shots with a rainbow forming in the mist.

Lunch was at Albergo Ristorante Baita Dovich , a cozy restaurant with a menu full of traditional dishes. We decided to try some local specialties. Hans and I shared a hearty plate of casunziei (beetroot ravioli), while Kati opted for the gnocchi with butter and sage. The food was delicious, and the service was warm and welcoming. It felt like we were dining in someone's home. The restaurant is family run, which I always love.

Our final stop for the day was Vista Panoramica Campitello , a viewpoint that promised breathtaking views of the surrounding area. And it certainly delivered! As we arrived, the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the valley. The panoramic vista was simply awe-inspiring. We could see for miles in every direction, with the jagged peaks of the Dolomites painted in hues of orange and pink. It was the perfect way to end our first day in the Dolomites. It made me feel so relaxed and grateful for this opportunity to share this beautiful place with my family.

Before dinner we did a little shopping at Arte del Bosco. I always like to get a souvenir from our trips, and I thought it would be nice to get something from a local artisan. It was nice to see how passionate the locals were about their work. I ended up buying a small wooden carving of an edelweiss flower. Edelweiss always reminds me of my childhood.

For dinner, we chose Osteria La Montanara , a charming restaurant in town known for its authentic cuisine and cozy atmosphere. We shared a variety of local dishes, including polenta with cheese, gnocchi, and a hearty meat stew. Everything was delicious, and the service was friendly and attentive. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring the Dolomites.

As I sit here writing this, I can't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience such beauty with my family. The Dolomites are truly a special place, and I'm already looking forward to what tomorrow brings. We are planning to see Terrazza delle Dolomiti, Val Pettorina and Passo Pordoi. I am really looking forward to seeing more of this beautiful area. I'm also excited to try the Wine Bar Oma tomorrow. It sounds like it will be a fun experience.



Tonight, as I reflect on our first day, I'm filled with a sense of wonder and gratitude. The Dolomites have already captured my heart, and I know that this is just the beginning of an unforgettable adventure. It’s moments like these that remind me why I started this blog in the first place – to share the beauty of the world and the joy of travel with others.
