A Fond Farewell to the Dolomites

As our family adventure in the Dolomites draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences we’ve shared over the past six days. From the moment we arrived, this region has captivated us with its stunning landscapes, charming villages, and rich culture. Today, our final day, was no exception, offering us a few more glimpses of the Dolomite’s breathtaking beauty before we begin our journey back to Leipzig.



Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Malga Contrin. The morning air was crisp and cool, a refreshing contrast to the warmth inside the malga. Surrounded by grazing cows and the stunning peaks of the Marmolada, Col Ombretta, and Gran Vernel, we enjoyed a traditional breakfast of fresh ricotta, thyme cheese, and homemade yogurt. Kati especially loved the Kaiserschmarren, while Hans savored the local speck. It was the perfect way to fuel up for our final day of exploration. I made sure to take a few extra photos, trying to capture the serene beauty of the valley as a lasting memory.

After breakfast, we set off along the Strada Dolomites, a scenic route known for its panoramic views. The drive itself was an experience, with every turn revealing a new vista of towering peaks and lush valleys. We stopped frequently to take photos, each of us trying to capture the perfect shot of the majestic landscape. The Strada Dolomites truly lives up to its reputation as one of the most beautiful roads in the world.

The Dolomites are a symphony of stone and sky, a place where nature composes masterpieces that linger in the heart long after you've departed.

Our next stop was the Belvedere di Canazei, a viewpoint offering unparalleled views of the surrounding mountains. The name Belvedere truly fits, as the panorama from this vantage point was simply breathtaking. We could see the Catinaccio, Sella, and Marmolada peaks in all their glory. Kati, ever the adventurous one, wanted to try the Diego slope in the Belvedere di Canazei ski area, but it seems that skiing season ended in early April. Instead, we took our time soaking in the views, identifying the various peaks and valleys, and committing the scene to memory. I felt a sense of peace and gratitude, thankful for the opportunity to share this incredible experience with my family.

From Belvedere di Canazei, we drove towards Cima Uomo, eager to experience one last hike in the Dolomites. The trails around Cima Uomo offered a variety of options, from gentle walks to more challenging climbs. We opted for a moderate trail that allowed us to enjoy the scenery without pushing ourselves too hard. As we hiked, we were surrounded by wildflowers and the sounds of nature. The air was fresh and clean, and the views from the trail were simply stunning.

For lunch, we stopped at La Stua Dei Ladins in Canazei, eager to savor some authentic Ladin cuisine. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. We ordered a variety of dishes, including traditional dumplings, homemade pasta, and local cheeses. The food was delicious, and the service was excellent. It was the perfect way to refuel after our hike and to experience the local culture. Hans particularly enjoyed the local wines, while Kati was thrilled with the delicious desserts.

In the late afternoon, as the sun began to dip behind the mountains, we decided to treat ourselves to a relaxing drink at the Dolcevita Lounge Bar - Moena. The bar had a lively and welcoming atmosphere, and we enjoyed a selection of cocktails and local wines. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring and to reflect on our incredible journey. Kati enjoyed the vibrant atmosphere, while Hans and I savored the local wines.

For our final dinner in the Dolomites, we chose Albergo Ombrettola in Falcade, drawn by its traditional cuisine and cozy atmosphere. The restaurant did not disappoint, serving up hearty dishes made with local ingredients. We savored every bite, knowing that this was our last taste of the Dolomites for now. The gnocchi with smoked ricotta and the capriolo with polenta were particular highlights, showcasing the rich culinary heritage of the region. It was a fitting end to our culinary journey through the Dolomites.

As I sit here now, writing this blog post, I can't help but feel a sense of melancholy. Our family adventure in the Dolomites has come to an end, but the memories we've made will last a lifetime.
