Exploring the Enchanting Island of Santorini with Friends
Day 11: A Day of Serenity and Hidden Gems in Santorini
Discover the tranquil beauty of Imerovigli and the historical Panagia Episkopi, savoring local flavors and artistic treasures.

Finding Peace in Imerovigli and Ancient Echoes
Today was a day of exploration that took me away from the bustling crowds and into the serene heart of Santorini. It’s amazing how much the island has to offer beyond the iconic caldera views, and I was eager to discover some of its more secluded treasures. With my friends in tow, I set out to explore Imerovigli and the ancient Panagia Episkopi, hoping to find a different side of this enchanting island.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Cosi Italian Restaurant in Kamari. I know, I know, Italian in Greece? But sometimes you just crave a taste of home, and Cosi came highly recommended. The restaurant had a lovely, cozy atmosphere, and the aromas of freshly baked bread and simmering sauces filled the air. I opted for a classic cappuccino and a flaky croissant, while my friends indulged in some of the more hearty Italian offerings. It was a perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring. I must admit it reminded me of Priya's amazing pasta back home, which I was missing dearly.
With our appetites satisfied, we made our way to Imerovigli. Perched on the highest point of the caldera, Imerovigli offered breathtaking views that rivaled even those of Oia. The village itself was a maze of narrow, winding streets, lined with charming white-washed houses and vibrant bougainvillea. It felt like stepping into a postcard, but without the throngs of tourists that often crowded the more popular spots. We wandered aimlessly, soaking in the tranquility and snapping photos of the stunning scenery. The views of Skaros Rock were particularly impressive, jutting out into the Aegean Sea like a defiant sentinel.

Sometimes, the most rewarding experiences are found in the quiet corners, away from the well-trodden paths.
We decided to take a leisurely stroll along the coastal path that connects Imerovigli to Fira. The trail offered panoramic views of the caldera, with the sparkling blue waters stretching out as far as the eye could see. The path was dotted with small churches and chapels, each one a testament to the island's rich religious heritage. As we walked, we couldn't help but feel a sense of peace and serenity wash over us. It was a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
For lunch, we stopped at Almira Restaurant, enticed by its idyllic waterfront location and the promise of fresh seafood. The restaurant was buzzing with activity, but we managed to snag a table right by the water's edge. The menu was filled with traditional Greek dishes, and we decided to share a selection of mezes, including grilled octopus, fried calamari, and a refreshing Greek salad. The food was delicious, and the setting was simply perfect. With the sun shining down and the gentle sea breeze in our hair, it felt like we were living a dream.

After lunch, we ventured inland to visit Panagia Episkopi, one of the oldest churches in Santorini. Built in the 11th century, the church is a testament to the island's Byzantine past. The road leading to the church was a bit bumpy, but the journey was well worth it. As we approached the church, we were struck by its simple yet elegant architecture. The orange-tiled roof and faded facade gave it a sense of timelessness, as if it had stood there for centuries, watching over the island. The church was originally used as an Orthodox Metropolis, later belonging to the Catholics during the Venetian times, before finally returning to the Orthodox people.

Inside, the church was filled with ancient frescoes and holy icons, dating back to the 11th and 12th centuries. Although photography was not allowed, I made sure to take it all in so I could remember this moment. The atmosphere was hushed and reverent, and we spent some time admiring the intricate artwork and soaking in the spiritual ambiance. It was a humbling experience, to stand in a place that had witnessed so much history and so much faith. I thought of my parents and how much they would have appreciated this place.
Before heading back to Fira, we decided to do a little shopping at Koukla Art, a charming little shop in Fira. The shop featured a collection of handmade jewelry and paintings by local Greek artists. I was immediately drawn to the unique designs and the vibrant colors. I ended up purchasing a beautiful silver necklace with a blue stone, a reminder of the Aegean Sea and the beautiful island of Santorini. My friends also found some lovely souvenirs to take back home. I always appreciate supporting local artisans, and Koukla Art was the perfect place to do so.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Kantouni for dinner. Located in Pyrgos, this restaurant came highly recommended for its traditional Greek cuisine and its charming garden setting. We were not disappointed. The restaurant was nestled in a leafy courtyard, with towering trees providing shade and a sense of tranquility. The menu featured a range of classic Greek dishes, and we decided to try the moussaka, the souvlaki, and the grilled lamb chops. The food was absolutely delicious, and the portions were generous. We savored every bite, accompanied by a bottle of local wine.

As we sat there, enjoying our meal and basking in the warm evening air, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences of the day. We had discovered a different side of Santorini, away from the crowds and the tourist traps. We had found peace in Imerovigli, history in Panagia Episkopi, and art in Koukla Art. And we had savored the flavors of Greece at Almira and Kantouni. It was a day that I would cherish for a long time to come.
Tomorrow, we are off to explore Pyrgos Kallistis and the Boutari Winery. I am excited to see more of the island and taste some of Santorini's famous wines. I'm also looking forward to a relaxing evening at Lux Bar Santorini.
As I reflect on my journey, I am reminded that travel is not just about seeing famous landmarks and ticking off bucket-list items. It's about immersing yourself in the local culture, connecting with the people, and discovering the hidden gems that make each destination unique. And it's about finding peace and serenity in the midst of the chaos, and appreciating the simple pleasures of life.
And with that, I bid you goodnight from the enchanting island of Santorini. Until tomorrow!
