Santorini's Nectar: A Day Among Vineyards and Villages

Today was all about indulging in the fruits of Santorini, both literally and figuratively. From sipping exquisite wines with caldera views to exploring the charming village of Pyrgos, it was a day that perfectly captured the essence of this beautiful island. I was particularly excited to share this experience with my friends, making memories that we'll cherish long after we've left these shores.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Esperisma Bar-Restaurant in Fira. The restaurant is perched atop the striking cliffs of the Caldera, and the views were simply breathtaking. I opted for a traditional Greek yogurt with honey and nuts, while my friends tried the local pastries. The food was delicious, but honestly, the panoramic vistas of the Aegean Sea and the volcanic islands were the real highlight. The friendly staff and the elegant ambiance made it a truly memorable start to the day. I made a mental note to bring Priya here one day; she would absolutely adore the romantic setting.

With our appetites sated and spirits lifted, we set off to explore the wineries of Santorini. Our first stop was Santo Wines, a winery renowned not only for its exceptional wines but also for its stunning location. As we approached, the sprawling vineyards cascading down the hillside towards the azure waters created a mesmerizing scene. The winery itself is modern and well-organized, with a large terrace offering unparalleled views of the volcano. We opted for a wine-tasting experience, sampling a selection of Santo Wines' finest vintages. The knowledgeable staff guided us through each wine, explaining the unique characteristics of the local grape varieties and the volcanic terroir that gives Santorini wines their distinctive flavor. I particularly enjoyed the Assyrtiko, with its crisp acidity and mineral notes. It reminded me of the fresh, vibrant flavors of Mauritius, a nostalgic connection to home. My friends favored the Nykteri, with its delicious oaky flavor.

Wine is bottled poetry.

After Santo Wines, we made our way to Venetsanos Winery, Santorini's first industrial winery, located closer to the port. While Santo Wines boasts a larger, more modern setup, Venetsanos offers a more intimate and historic experience. The winery is built into the cliffside, and the views from the tasting terrace are equally spectacular. We took a guided tour of the winery, learning about the Venetsanos family's rich history and the traditional winemaking techniques they employ. The tour was very informative, and the guide spoke passionately about the unique terroir of Santorini and the challenges of cultivating vines on this volcanic island. Of course, no visit to Venetsanos would be complete without a wine tasting. We sampled a selection of their wines, each paired with delicious Greek and local delicacies. I was particularly impressed by their Mandilaria, a red wine with rich, fruity aromas and a smooth, velvety texture. Priya would have loved this one too; she always appreciates a good red. Jennifer Cueto mentioned that they had their wedding ceremony at Venetsanos and it is such a stunning and romantic place with amazing caldera views especially during sunset.

Following our wine-filled adventures, we decided to explore the village of Pyrgos, a hidden gem nestled in the heart of Santorini. Pyrgos is the highest village on the island, offering panoramic views of the entire landscape. As we wandered through the narrow, winding streets, we were captivated by the traditional Cycladic architecture, with its whitewashed houses, blue-domed churches, and colorful bougainvillea. The village exudes a sense of tranquility and authenticity that is a welcome contrast to the bustling tourist crowds of Oia and Fira. We stumbled upon The Traditional Cave Souvenirs, a charming little shop offering a variety of local crafts and souvenirs. I picked up a few small gifts for Priya and Aarav, wanting to bring them a piece of Santorini's beauty back home. The shop was a treasure trove of unique items, each telling a story of the island's rich culture and heritage.

Lunch was at Cava Alta, a restaurant in Pyrgos known for its Mediterranean cuisine and stunning views. The restaurant is housed in a restored century-old winery, adding to its charm and character. We sat on the rooftop terrace, soaking in the breathtaking views of the island and the Aegean Sea. The menu featured a variety of fresh, local ingredients, and we opted for a selection of traditional Greek dishes to share. The food was simply delicious, bursting with flavor and cooked to perfection. I particularly enjoyed the pork belly dish. The service was impeccable, and the staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome. Madeleine DeRosier mentioned that the service and food are absolutely out of this world. The food is Michelin star worthy and the view at sunset is breathtaking to say the least.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Pyrgos Restaurant, another gem in the village known for its stunning sunset views and traditional Santorinian cuisine. The restaurant is located on one of the highest points in Pyrgos, offering unparalleled views of the island. The atmosphere was magical, with soft lighting, elegant decor, and a gentle breeze rustling through the trees. We enjoyed a leisurely dinner, savoring the flavors of Santorini and reminiscing about our day's adventures. The sea bream was delicious and reasonably priced, and the service was quick and attentive. The whole side of the island looked amazing during sunset. We felt grateful for the opportunity to experience such beauty and camaraderie.

Tomorrow, we're planning to explore Nea Kameni and the Santorini Old Harbor. I'm particularly excited about visiting Nea Kameni, the volcanic island in the center of the caldera, and learning more about the geological history of Santorini. We'll also be having dinner at Ammoudi Fish Tavern, which I've heard is a must-visit for seafood lovers. I'm looking forward to another day of adventure and discovery on this enchanting island.

Today was a reminder of why I love to travel. It's not just about seeing new places; it's about experiencing new cultures, connecting with people, and creating memories that will last a lifetime. And sharing those experiences with friends makes them all the more special. As I reflect on our day of wine, views, and village charm, I feel grateful for the opportunity to explore this beautiful island and share its magic with my friends. Santorini, you have truly captured my heart.

Update on Santorini:
Cruise ships have resumed operations, with several docking in March and April, signaling a return to normal tourism. Generally, tourism businesses in Santorini expect fewer visitors compared to previous years. However, this presents a great opportunity for those who wish to explore the island with more comfort and fewer crowds!
Also, schools in Santorini, Anafi, Ios, and Amorgos are reopening today, Tuesday, after a month of closure for precautionary reasons due to the intense seismic activity in the Cyclades.
Also, the ports of Fira (Old Port) and Oia (Ammoudi Port) will remain closed or with controlled access until May. Cruise ships will approach Athinios Port, and leisure cruises (catamaran tours) will depart from Vlychada Port.
