A Solo Adventure in Peneda-Gerês National Park
Day 2: Chasing Waterfalls and Serenity in Gerês: A Day of Solo Exploration
Discover the hidden gems of Peneda-Gerês National Park on a solo journey, from turquoise pools to ancient forests and local flavors.
Finding My Bliss in Gerês: Waterfalls, Woods, and Wonders
Today was exactly the kind of day I envisioned when I booked this solo trip to Peneda-Gerês National Park. It was a day filled with the raw beauty of nature, the thrill of exploration, and moments of quiet reflection that nourished my soul. Leaving behind the familiar buzz of Berlin, even just for a week, does wonders for my spirit. It allows me to reconnect with the earth, something that’s deeply important to me, especially given my passion for beekeeping. Today, Gerês unveiled some of its most precious secrets, and I’m eager to share them with you.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Vai... Vai Gerês. I opted for some simple scrambled eggs and toast, fueling up for the adventures ahead. The reviews online mentioned their vegetarian pizza and burgers, so I made a mental note to try them if I found myself back in the area.
Diving into the Azure Depths of Poço Azul
My first stop was Poço Azul, a spot I had been eagerly anticipating since I first saw photos of its mesmerizing turquoise waters. The drive there was scenic, winding through the park's lush landscapes. The hike to the lagoon was relatively short, about 4 km each way, but definitely made me break a sweat. As I descended, the anticipation grew with each step, and when I finally arrived, the sight was simply breathtaking.
The water was even more vibrant in person, a stunning shade of blue that seemed almost surreal. I couldn't resist diving in, and the cool water was incredibly refreshing after the hike. I spent a good hour swimming and simply soaking in the tranquility of the surroundings. It was the perfect way to connect with nature and feel a sense of peace wash over me. I could see why so many people are drawn to this spot, even though I can imagine that it gets crowded in the summer months. I was glad that I came in May, as it allowed me to enjoy the place almost to myself.

Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.
Wandering Through the Ancient Woodlands of Mata de Albergaria
Next on my list was Mata de Albergaria, an ancient forest that promised a serene escape into nature. The drive from Poço Azul was short, and soon I found myself surrounded by towering oak trees, their branches reaching towards the sky like ancient arms. The forest floor was covered in a thick carpet of moss and ferns, creating a magical atmosphere.
As I walked deeper into the forest, I felt a sense of timelessness wash over me. The air was cool and damp, and the only sounds were the rustling of leaves and the occasional birdsong. I imagined what it must have been like to walk through these woods centuries ago, when Roman soldiers marched along the nearby Via Romana.
Mata de Albergaria is known for its biodiversity, and I kept my eyes peeled for signs of wildlife. Although I didn't spot any deer or wolves, I did see several interesting birds and insects, which was fascinating. As an urban beekeeper, I always appreciate the chance to observe different ecosystems and learn about the interconnectedness of life. The forest is extensive, covering over 1500 hectares, and I only explored a small part of it. I made a mental note to return someday and delve deeper into its hidden corners.

Chasing the Cascades at Cascata da Rajada
My final stop of the day was Cascata da Rajada, a waterfall nestled in the hills near the village of Ermida. The hike to the waterfall was a bit more challenging than the previous ones, with some steep inclines and rocky paths. However, the stunning views along the way made it well worth the effort. From the Miradouro da Vela and Miradouro das Silhas, I could see the Arado valley stretched out before me, a tapestry of green fields and rolling hills.
As I approached the waterfall, I could hear the rushing water, and soon the cascade came into view. Cascata da Rajada is not a huge waterfall, but its beauty lies in its setting. The water plunges into a small pool surrounded by mossy rocks and lush vegetation, creating a peaceful and inviting spot. I took some time to sit by the pool, enjoying the cool spray and the sounds of nature. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and adventure.

A Culinary Conclusion
After a day of hiking and exploring, I was ready for a hearty meal. I drove to O Abocanhado for lunch, a restaurant known for its traditional Portuguese cuisine and stunning views. The restaurant is located in the village of Brufe, at an altitude of about 800 meters, and the building is designed to blend in with the landscape.
I ordered the *Bacalhau com Migas*, a traditional cod dish with breadcrumbs, and it was absolutely delicious. The cod was juicy and flavorful, and the *migas* were perfectly seasoned. The service was attentive, and the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. It was the perfect place to relax and reflect on the day's adventures. O Abocanhado is also known for its commitment to sustainability, using local ingredients and implementing good environmental practices. This aligns perfectly with my values, and I appreciated the effort they put into preserving the environment.

For dinner, I decided to try Espreita, a restaurant in Gerês known for its kebabs and grilled meats. The restaurant had good reviews, and I was curious to see what it was like. I ordered the *Kebab Espreita*, which was a large portion of grilled meat with vegetables and sauce. It was tasty and satisfying, and the prices were reasonable. Espreita seems like a popular spot, and it was quite busy when I arrived. The atmosphere was lively and casual, and the service was friendly.

Before heading back to my accommodation, I stopped by Lurdes Capela, a local bar, for a quick drink. It seemed like a popular spot, and there were quite a few people inside. I ordered a glass of local wine and chatted with some of the locals. It was a nice way to end the day and experience the local culture.

Reflections on a Day Well-Spent
As I drove back, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the experiences of the day. Peneda-Gerês National Park had exceeded my expectations, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty, outdoor adventure, and cultural immersion. I realized how much I needed this solo trip to reconnect with myself and with nature. It reminded me of the importance of slowing down, appreciating the simple things, and finding joy in the present moment.
I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's itinerary, which includes a visit to Miradouro de Junceda, Pico da Nevosa, and Cascata de Cela Cavalos. I'm also planning to have breakfast at Restaurante Cantinho do Antigamente, lunch at Essentia do Gerês, and dinner at Restaurante Pedra Bela Gerês. And, if time allows, I'm hoping to stop by Peneda Gerês Adventure Center by Tobogã to pick up some souvenirs. I am also aware that Braga is Portugal's Capital of Culture in 2025, so I might consider a visit.
It's comforting to know that even in our modern, fast-paced world, places like Peneda-Gerês still exist, where nature reigns supreme and the human spirit can find solace and inspiration. I encourage anyone who is seeking a similar experience to consider a visit to this magical corner of Portugal. You won't be disappointed.
Until tomorrow!
