Saturday's Charms in Moulay Idriss

Today, Hans and I immersed ourselves in the heart of Moulay Idriss, a town that whispers stories of faith, history, and breathtaking beauty. From exploring ancient gates to savoring authentic Moroccan flavors, every moment was a sensory delight. I am so happy to be able to share my experiences with all of you, and I hope you enjoy reading about our day.

Our day started with a hearty Moroccan breakfast at Café Restaurant Ksar Pharaon. The café was bustling with locals, and the aroma of freshly baked bread and mint tea filled the air. I opted for a traditional eggplant salad, while Hans enjoyed Moroccan chicken. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration.

Next on our itinerary was a visit to Bab Boujloud, although technically in Fez, it captured our attention with its intricate blue and green tilework. As the main entrance to Fes el Bali, the old city of Fez, it's an ornate city gate that was built in 1913 by the French colonial administration. The gate is a photographer's dream, and we spent a good hour capturing its beauty from every angle. The vibrant colors and the bustling atmosphere around the gate made it a truly immersive experience. We watched as donkeys, vendors and tourists mingled in the car-free zone.

After soaking in the sights of Bab Boujloud, we made our way back to Moulay Idriss to explore Kasabah Senhaji. This kasbah offered a tranquil escape from the bustling streets. The architecture was stunning, and the views from the kasbah were simply breathtaking. As we wandered through its corridors, I couldn't help but imagine the lives of those who once called this place home. We took many photos, wanting to capture the beauty of the building itself, as well as the surrounding nature.

For lunch, we decided to try Roman City, a restaurant that came highly recommended. The restaurant lived up to its reputation, serving up delicious Mediterranean and Moroccan cuisines. Hans and I shared a vegetable tagine, and we both agreed that it was one of the best we've ever had. The service was impeccable, and the staff were friendly and welcoming.

Our afternoon was dedicated to shopping, and we paid a visit to زيارة باب مولاي إدريس, an antique shop in the heart of town. The shop was a treasure trove of Moroccan artifacts, and I couldn't resist buying a few souvenirs to take back home. Hans, on the other hand, was more interested in the shop's collection of old maps and postcards. I ended up buying a beautiful, hand-painted ceramic bowl, while Hans found a vintage postcard of Moulay Idriss from the 1950s.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Al Andaloussiya Diyafa for dinner. This restaurant is known for its traditional Moroccan dishes, and we were eager to try it out. We were not disappointed. The ambiance was warm and inviting. I savored an aromatic tagine, while Hans enjoyed fluffy couscous. The flavors were rich and complex, and every bite was a culinary adventure. We enjoyed a very nice lamb tagine, which is apparently a local favorite.

After dinner, we took a leisurely stroll through the town, soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. The stars were out, and the air was crisp and cool. It was the perfect end to a perfect day.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Haroune Aqueduct and Small Terasse, and perhaps enjoy a drink at La Colombe Blanche. It's hard to believe our trip is drawing to a close. I will be sad to leave, but I will always have the wonderful memories we created here. I am so glad I got to experience this with Hans. I am also glad that I have the opportunity to share it with all of you.

I also realized today that I had forgotten to buy sunscreen and a local SIM card, both of which would have been useful. But I am still having a wonderful time.

Until next time,
