A Day of Icelandic Charms
As the sun began its slow ascent, casting a gentle glow over Snæfellsjökull National Park, I knew today would be special. After several days of traversing Iceland's magnificent landscapes, today promised a blend of serene exploration and culinary indulgence. With Hans by my side, I was eager to discover the hidden gems of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula.
Our day commenced with a hearty breakfast at Hlaðan Veitingahús. This charming restaurant, nestled in a beautifully renovated barn, exuded a cozy and inviting atmosphere. Inspired by Icelandic grandmothers' cooking, the chef expertly prepares delicious food using fresh, locally sourced ingredients. I savored every bite, feeling the warmth and care that went into each dish. The tofu steak and fish dish were excellent. Hans, ever the traditionalist, opted for the buffet, enjoying the meat and fish dishes with Icelandic sides. The rhubarb strawberry pie was a sweet end to a delightful breakfast.
With our appetites satisfied, we set off to Lýsuhóll, a family-run horse farm known for its unique riding tours along the beach and lava fields. I had heard about the therapeutic mineral water pool and hot tub nearby , but the thought of riding an Icelandic horse along the beach was too tempting to resist. As someone who enjoys new experiences, I was keen to try beach riding.
We chose the Lava and to the Beach tour, a beginner-friendly excursion that promised stunning views of the landscape and the iconic Snæfellsjökull glacier. The Icelandic horses were gentle and sure-footed, and the experienced guides ensured our safety and enjoyment. Riding through the lava fields was surreal, the rugged terrain contrasting with the serene beauty of the coastline. As we reached the beach, the crisp sea air filled my lungs, and the rhythmic sound of the waves created a sense of tranquility. Hans, with his sturdy frame and down-to-earth personality, was in his element, enjoying the connection with nature.

Sometimes, the most scenic roads in life are the detours you didn't mean to take.
After our invigorating ride, we drove to Keflavíkurvör, a historical landmark in Hellissandur. This site stands as a testament to the area's rich history and cultural significance, representing the stories and heritage of the local community. As we approached, the serene beauty of the surrounding landscapes welcomed us, with dramatic coastal views and rugged terrain. I found it a perfect spot for photography, capturing the essence of Iceland's natural and historical beauty. We took a leisurely walk around the site, enjoying the fresh ocean breeze and stunning views. The informative signage and local guides shared tales and insights about the landmark's past, enriching our understanding of the region.

For lunch, we stopped at Fosshotel Hellnar. The restaurant offered exceptional views of Hellnar's cliffed coasts, a favored haunt for orcas, although we didn't spot any during our visit. The traditional Icelandic dishes were a delight, and the organic wines and beers complemented our meal perfectly. The staff was friendly and helpful, making our dining experience even more enjoyable.

In the late afternoon, seeking a taste of something different, we decided to visit Ísey Skyr Bar. Although the Ísey Skyr Bar that we had read about was a bit of a drive away in Hafnarfjörður, we were able to find Ísey Skyr at a local shop. I was eager to try skyr, a traditional Icelandic dairy product known for being rich in protein and low in fat. We indulged in a variety of unique flavors and beautifully crafted smoothies, enjoying the refreshing and healthy treats. As someone who appreciates culinary arts and sustainable living, I was impressed by the bar's focus on quality ingredients and locally sourced products.

As evening approached, we made our way to Ólafsvík for dinner at Reks. This Scandinavian restaurant offered a cozy atmosphere and a menu featuring perfectly cooked lamb, fish soup, and cod. I chose the lamb, savoring the tender and flavorful meat. Hans opted for the fish soup, which he described as hearty and comforting. The hospitable staff and fine service added to the overall positive experience.

To cap off the evening, we considered a visit to Ísey Skyr Bar, but decided to turn in early to prepare for tomorrow's adventures. Tomorrow, we plan to visit The Torch and Whale mural.
As I reflect on today's experiences, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to explore the hidden gems of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. From the serene beaches and historical landmarks to the culinary delights and warm hospitality, every moment has been a treasure. I am reminded of the importance of embracing the unexpected and finding joy in the simple pleasures of life.
Snæfellsjökull National Park has truly captured my heart, and I eagerly anticipate the adventures that await us tomorrow.
The weather in November can be harsh, but it offers the best chance to see the Northern Lights. The average temperatures range from -1°C (30°F) to 4°C (39°F), and rain showers can be frequent, which can turn into snow as temperatures drop. Despite the cold, the beauty of the landscape makes it all worthwhile. The key is to be prepared and dress warmly.
I am so glad that I remembered to pack my warm clothing, hiking boots, and camera. However, I did forget my portable charger and thermal flask, which would have been useful during the day. I will make sure to remember them for tomorrow's adventures.
