Day 4: Gardens and Fairytales: A Day of Enchantment in Villandry and L'Islette
Discover the stunning gardens of Villandry and the fairytale charm of Château de l'Islette, a perfect day in the Loire Valley.
A Daydream in Bloom
Today was like stepping into a painting, a blend of manicured artistry and romantic history. The Loire Valley continues to enchant, revealing layer upon layer of its captivating charm. Today, Katarzyna, Zofia and I explored meticulously designed gardens and a castle steeped in stories of love and intrigue. It was a day where the beauty of nature and the echoes of the past intertwined, creating memories we'll cherish.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant le 36 in Amboise. The restaurant is located in an enchanting 18th-century building and I can see why it has such great reviews. I had a wonderful omelette and Katarzyna enjoyed some pastries, while Zofia had some delicious fresh fruit. Fully energised, we set off to explore the day's itinerary.
Villandry's Verdant Tapestry
The first stop was the Château de Villandry, a place where the gardens are not just an accompaniment to the castle, but a star in their own right. As an automotive mechatronics technician, I usually deal with precise engineering and functionality. However, there's something incredibly satisfying about witnessing the same level of precision applied to nature. The gardens at Villandry are a testament to human artistry, transforming nature into a breathtaking spectacle.

Wandering through the gardens, I was struck by the geometric precision of the vegetable garden, or *potager*. Each square was a riot of colors, with lettuces, cabbages, and herbs arranged in patterns that were both beautiful and practical. Zofia was particularly fascinated, pointing out the different shapes and colors, and asking endless questions about what each plant was. I found myself explaining the principles of crop rotation and companion planting, turning a simple garden visit into an impromptu science lesson.
The beauty of Villandry lies not just in its visual appeal but in the harmony between nature and human design.
The ornamental gardens were equally impressive, with sculpted hedges, vibrant flowerbeds, and serene water features. Katarzyna, with her librarian's eye for detail, appreciated the historical accuracy of the Renaissance designs. We learned about the different garden styles, from the love gardens, with their symbolic hearts and masks, to the water garden, offering a tranquil space for reflection. The morning was spent wandering through these meticulously crafted spaces, each turn revealing a new perspective and a fresh burst of color.
A Romantic Interlude at Château de l'Islette
After immersing ourselves in the grandeur of Villandry, we drove to Château de l'Islette, a smaller, more intimate castle with a fascinating history. Known as the Castle of the Lovers, it was once the meeting place for Camille Claudel and Auguste Rodin, two of the most influential sculptors of their time. The castle exudes a sense of romance, its reflection shimmering in the waters of the Indre River.

We enjoyed lunch at Auberge du Prieuré. The restaurant had great reviews and we were not disappointed. The food was delicious and the service was excellent. I tried the local fish, Katarzyna had a wonderful salad and Zofia enjoyed some chicken.
As we walked through the castle, I imagined Camille and Auguste finding inspiration in the serene surroundings. The rooms were filled with period furniture and artwork, offering a glimpse into the lives of the castle's former inhabitants. Zofia was particularly captivated by the story of the lovers, and Katarzyna and I found ourselves discussing the impact of their passionate relationship on their art.
The grounds of Château de l'Islette were perfect for a leisurely stroll. We walked along the riverbank, watching the swans glide gracefully through the water. Zofia collected colorful stones, while Katarzyna sketched the castle in her notebook. I took the opportunity to explain the castle's architecture, pointing out the defensive features and the elegant Renaissance additions.
It appears there are Easter activities at the Château de l'Islette until May 18th, with a Treasure Hunt in Search of Animals. Zofia would have loved that, but she was happy enough just exploring the castle grounds.
Culinary Delights and Evening Ambiance
As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Auberge Pom'Poire for dinner. This restaurant, recommended by several locals, promised a taste of authentic Loire Valley cuisine. The drive was lovely, the sun was setting and the views were beautiful.

The meal was a delightful experience, each dish showcasing the region's fresh, seasonal ingredients. I savored the *rillons*, a local specialty of slow-cooked pork belly, while Katarzyna enjoyed a vegetarian dish featuring asparagus and local cheeses. Zofia, always a fan of simple fare, devoured a plate of perfectly cooked chicken and potatoes. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, the perfect end to a day of exploration and discovery. The restaurant has one Michelin star and I can see why. The food was delicious and the service was impeccable.
To cap off the evening, we stopped by Crêperie Bar Cocktails La Cour in Tours for a nightcap. I had a local beer, while Katarzyna enjoyed a glass of wine. Zofia, of course, had a crepe. The atmosphere was lively and fun, the perfect way to end a perfect day.
