Ancient Echoes and Artisan Crafts in Évora

Today was a day of immersing ourselves in the heart of Évora, a city that whispers stories from centuries past. From the architectural marvels that once supplied life-giving water to the delicate crafts that embody the spirit of the region, every corner held a new discovery. It’s days like these that remind me why I love sharing these journeys with my family, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Híbrido, a local spot known for its contemporary take on Portuguese cuisine. I always appreciate starting the day with a good meal; it fuels our adventures and sets a positive tone for what’s to come. Sophie was particularly excited about the fresh pastries, while Andreas enjoyed a strong coffee to kickstart his morning. It's these simple family moments that I cherish the most. I am always excited to try restaurants that offer a modern approach, mixing traditional elements with innovation.

Fueled and ready, our first stop was the Aqueduto de Évora, an impressive aqueduct that has been providing clean water to Évora since the 16th century. The sheer scale of the structure is awe-inspiring, and it’s fascinating to think about the ingenuity required to build such a system so long ago. We walked along a section of it, imagining what life must have been like when the aqueduct was first built, bringing life to this Alentejo city. Even Sophie, who usually prefers more modern attractions, was captivated by the aqueduct's history and presence. The aqueduct stretches for 18 kilometers, a testament to the engineering skills of the past. I was particularly impressed by the section on Rua do Cano, where houses are built between the arches.

The beauty of travel lies not just in seeing new places, but in understanding the stories they tell.

Next on our list was the Museum of Crafts and Design – MADE, a treasure trove of local artistry. The museum showcases a diverse range of items, from traditional pottery and textiles to contemporary design pieces. As someone who appreciates handmade items and the stories behind them, I found this museum particularly inspiring. Sophie was drawn to the intricate tapestries, while Andreas admired the craftsmanship of the cork and wood pieces. It's wonderful to see how traditional techniques are being reinterpreted in modern ways, keeping the region's cultural heritage alive. The museum is relatively new, founded in 2011, and is dedicated to preserving the artisanal heritage of the Alentejo region.

After the museum, we took a leisurely stroll through the streets of Évora, soaking in the atmosphere and popping into Jirau Handcraft Goods for a bit of shopping. I was on the lookout for unique souvenirs that would remind us of our time here. Jirau is a charming shop that features authentic Portuguese ceramics and handcrafted goods. I found a beautiful hand-painted ceramic bowl that will be perfect for displaying flowers back home in Bonn. Sophie picked out a colorful textile bracelet, and Andreas found a traditional Alentejo hat to add to his collection. Supporting local artisans is important to me, and it feels good to know that our purchases are contributing to the local economy. Jirau is based in Évora and works in partnership with local artisans.

For lunch, we headed to Restaurante Cozinha da Catarina, a charming restaurant known for its authentic Alentejo cuisine. The restaurant has a cozy atmosphere and a menu filled with traditional dishes. I decided to try the *porco preto* (black pork), a regional specialty, while Andreas opted for the *bacalhau* (codfish). Sophie, being a bit less adventurous, chose a simple grilled chicken dish. The food was delicious, and the service was warm and welcoming. It was a perfect spot to relax and refuel after a morning of exploring. The restaurant is well-regarded, with many positive reviews.

In the afternoon, we visited the Convento de Santa Clara, a former convent that now serves as a school. The convent, founded in the 15th century, has a rich history and beautiful architecture. The church, with its baroque decoration and frescoed ceiling, was particularly impressive. Although the cloister and other convent dependencies are not always open to the public, the church itself is worth a visit. Sophie was fascinated by the stories of the princesses who were once locked away here, while Andreas appreciated the artistic details of the interior. The convent has served various purposes over the years, including as a military barracks and a school.

As the day drew to a close, we decided to treat ourselves to a special dinner at Fialho, a renowned restaurant that has been serving traditional Alentejo cuisine for over 80 years. Fialho is known for its classic dishes and impeccable service. I had heard about their *perna de cabrito* (leg of lamb) and was eager to try it. Andreas chose the *arroz de lebre* (hare rice), another local specialty. The meal was exceptional, and the atmosphere was elegant and inviting. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and discovery. The restaurant has a long history and has hosted many famous visitors.

Today was a reminder of why we embarked on this family adventure in the first place: to immerse ourselves in new cultures, create lasting memories, and strengthen our bonds as a family. Évora has certainly delivered on all fronts, and I’m excited to see what tomorrow brings. We plan to visit Pátio de São Miguel, the Royal Palace of Évora, and Cartuxa - Quinta de Valbom - Fundação Eugénio de Almeida. And perhaps end the day with a glass of wine at ADC Wine & Food Bar. I am looking forward to it already!
