A Day of Discovery in Arraiolos

Today’s journey took us to Arraiolos, a town that immediately charmed me with its blend of history, art, and gastronomy. It’s amazing how a single day can offer such a rich tapestry of experiences, weaving together the threads of the past and present. The crisp December air added a touch of magic as we explored this gem in the Alentejo region.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Tragos E Condutos. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong Portuguese coffee filled the air, a perfect start to fuel our explorations. I opted for a traditional *pão com chouriço*, while Andreas enjoyed the *torradas* with local cheese. Sophie, of course, chose a *pastel de nata*, her daily indulgence. It's these simple moments, sharing local flavors, that truly connect us to a place.

With our appetites satisfied, we set off to explore the iconic Castle of Arraiolos. Perched atop Monte de São Pedro, the castle offered panoramic views of the town and the surrounding Alentejo landscape. What struck me most was its unique circular architecture; I learned that it's one of the few circular castles in the world. Built in the early 14th century by King Dinis, the castle has a rich history, having served as a strategic military point and a royal residence. As we walked along the ancient walls, I imagined what life must have been like centuries ago, the wind carrying whispers of the past.

The beauty of travel lies not just in seeing new places, but in experiencing the stories they hold.

Inside the castle walls, we discovered the Igreja do Salvador, a church dating back to the 16th century. Its simple yet elegant architecture provided a serene contrast to the ruggedness of the castle walls. Sophie was particularly fascinated by the old tombstones and tried to decipher the inscriptions. It’s moments like these that spark her curiosity and make our family trips so rewarding. The castle has a square, inner castle, with a slender tall keep incorporated into the curtain wall, which was situated next to the south gate. This inner castle was called the Paço dos Alcaides (Mayor's Palace).

Next on our itinerary was the Interpretive Center of Arraiolos Carpet. As a floral designer, I have a deep appreciation for intricate patterns and craftsmanship, and I was eager to learn more about the renowned Arraiolos carpets. The center provided a comprehensive overview of the history, techniques, and artistry behind these beautiful hand-embroidered rugs. I was fascinated to discover that the art of Arraiolos carpets may have originated with the Moors in the 12th century and evolved over the centuries. The displays showcased a stunning array of carpets, each with its unique design and story. Sophie was particularly intrigued by the demonstrations of the traditional embroidery techniques.

After immersing ourselves in the world of carpets, our stomachs began to rumble, signaling it was time for lunch. We headed to Ervideira Winelounge, where we enjoyed a delightful meal paired with local Alentejo wines. I savored the *porco preto* (black pork), a regional specialty, while Andreas opted for the *bacalhau à brás* (codfish with scrambled eggs and potatoes). Sophie, ever adventurous, tried the *migas*, a traditional bread-based dish. The relaxed atmosphere and the friendly service made it a truly enjoyable experience. We learned that Arraiolos has several weeks dedicated to meat specialties, organizing tasting events and entertainment to attract tourists and to indulge locals as well.

In the late afternoon, we visited the Igreja e Mosteiro de São Francisco. Although the monastery has been largely lost to time, with the municipal cemetery taking its place after 1834, the church remains a testament to the region’s rich religious history. Founded in 1612, the church exemplifies the simple Franciscan architecture characteristic of the region. The church is of great simplicity, characteristic of the regional Franciscan architecture.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Bar Culpa Tua for a pre-dinner drink. This cozy bar is known for its vibrant ambiance and extensive gin selection. I enjoyed a refreshing gin and tonic with local botanicals, while Andreas sampled a craft beer. Sophie, of course, stuck to her usual *sumo de laranja natural* (fresh orange juice). It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploration.

For dinner, we chose A Choupana, a restaurant known for its traditional Alentejo cuisine. I indulged in the *ensopado de borrego* (lamb stew), a hearty and flavorful dish that warmed me from the inside out. Andreas opted for the *sopa de cação* (dogfish soup), a regional delicacy. Sophie, always a fan of seafood, enjoyed the grilled *lulas* (squid). The restaurant’s cozy atmosphere and attentive service made it a memorable dining experience.

As we strolled back to M'AR De AR Aqueduto, the stars twinkled above us, casting a magical glow on the ancient streets of Évora. It was a perfect end to a day filled with history, art, and culinary delights. Arraiolos had captured our hearts with its unique charm and warm hospitality. Tomorrow, we’re off to explore Monsaraz Castle and the Xerez Megalithic Enclosure. I’m particularly excited about visiting Herdade do Esporão, a renowned winery, where we’ll have the opportunity to taste some of the region’s finest wines. I'm sure Sophie will enjoy the shop D'Évora for you Artesanato, Gourmet e Vinhos. It promises to be another day of discovery and adventure in the beautiful Alentejo region.
