Echoes of the Past in Évora

Today was a day of stepping back in time, tracing the echoes of civilizations long past. We ventured into the heart of the Alentejo to explore the ancient megalithic sites that dot the landscape around Évora. It’s a humbling experience to stand where people stood thousands of years ago, pondering the mysteries of life and the cosmos. The crisp December air and the rolling hills of the countryside provided the perfect backdrop for our journey into the past.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurante A Casa. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong Portuguese coffee filled the air, setting the perfect tone for a day of exploration. I opted for the *migas*, a traditional Alentejo dish made with bread, garlic, and olive oil. It was simple, yet incredibly satisfying, and fueled us up for our first stop: the Almendres Cromlech.

The drive to Almendres Cromlech was an experience in itself. The landscape unfolded before us like a painting, with rolling hills, cork oak trees, and olive groves stretching as far as the eye could see. As we neared the site, a sense of anticipation began to build. I had read about the Almendres Cromlech, but nothing could have prepared me for the sheer magnitude and mystical aura of the place.

The Almendres Cromlech, also known as Cromeleque dos Almendres, is a megalithic complex dating back to the Neolithic period. It is considered one of the largest and most important megalithic sites in the Iberian Peninsula, even predating Stonehenge. As we walked among the 95 standing stones, arranged in two distinct circles, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and wonder. The stones, weathered by time and etched with ancient symbols, seemed to whisper stories of rituals, beliefs, and a deep connection to the cosmos.

Sophie was particularly fascinated by the stones, running her hands over their rough surfaces and trying to decipher the mysterious carvings. Andreas, ever the pragmatist, was more interested in the engineering aspects of the site, marveling at how these massive stones were transported and erected thousands of years ago. As for me, I simply soaked in the atmosphere, letting the ancient energy of the place wash over me. It was a truly humbling experience, connecting us to the distant past and reminding us of the enduring human quest for meaning and understanding.

Standing among these ancient stones, I felt a profound connection to the past, a sense of continuity that transcended time and space.

Leaving Almendres Cromlech, we drove to our next destination: the Great Dolmen of Zambujeiro.

This megalithic monument is one of the largest dolmens in Europe, a testament to the ingenuity and communal spirit of Neolithic societies. As we approached the site, the sheer size of the dolmen was staggering. Seven stones and a closing slab create the chamber. Protected by a metal sheet roof, the structure stands in a field of wildflowers.

Inside, the cool, dark space felt like a sanctuary, a place where ancient rituals and ceremonies may have taken place. It was easy to imagine the dolmen as a portal to another world, a place where the living could connect with the spirits of the dead. The entire setting was magical, and it gave us a glimpse into the lives of the people who inhabited this land thousands of years ago.

After our exploration of the megalithic sites, we drove back to Évora, ready for a late lunch. We chose Cavalariça Évora, a restaurant that seamlessly blends traditional Portuguese flavors with modern culinary techniques.

The restaurant is in the Palácio dos Duques de Cadaval, adding to the ambiance. We sat outside under the trees and enjoyed the atmosphere. I decided on the vegetarian risotto with roasted cauliflower, while Andreas chose the pickled rabbit. Sophie enjoyed a simple pasta dish. The food was delicious, the service impeccable, and the setting simply enchanting.

With our appetites sated, we strolled through the charming streets of Évora, making our way to the Centro de Arte e Cultura - Fundação Eugénio de Almeida.

This cultural center is dedicated to promoting artistic and cultural initiatives, with a focus on contemporary art. The center has exhibitions, performative projects, and educational programs.

We explored the various galleries, admiring the diverse range of artworks on display. Sophie was drawn to the paintings, while Andreas was more interested in the sculptures. I appreciated the center's commitment to showcasing both established and emerging artists, providing a platform for creativity and dialogue. It was a stimulating and thought-provoking experience, reminding us of the power of art to challenge, inspire, and transform.

Before dinner, I wanted to find some authentic Alentejo crafts, so we stopped by Gente da Minha Terra.

This shop offers a beautiful selection of decorative objects and accessories, all made by local artisans who reinterpret Alentejo's traditional know-how. I bought a hand-painted ceramic bowl and a small cork sculpture, both of which will serve as reminders of our time in Évora.

For our final meal of the day, we had dinner at Origens Restaurante.

This restaurant is known for its Alentejo flavors with modern techniques. Chef Gonçalo Queiroz and his wife, Eugénia, invite guests to visit the Alentejo through traditional flavors with contemporary presentations. We started with a selection of local cheeses and cured meats, followed by the black pork cheeks and the codfish with cornbread. The food was exceptional, the wine list extensive, and the service warm and attentive. It was the perfect way to end our day of exploring Évora's ancient wonders.

As we walked back to M'AR De AR Aqueduto,

the stars twinkled above us, casting a magical glow over the city. I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences of the day, for the opportunity to connect with the past, and for the simple joys of good food, good company, and a shared sense of wonder.

Tomorrow, we're off to Arraiolos to explore its castle and famous carpets. I’m looking forward to discovering more of the Alentejo's hidden gems and sharing them with you all. Until then, *adeus*!
