Adieu, Florence!

As our Florentine escapade draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the countless memories we've created as a family. Today was all about soaking in the last drops of this city's magic, from panoramic views to artistic masterpieces. It's bittersweet, but I'm so grateful for the experiences we've shared.

Our final day in Florence began, as always, with breakfast at Cuculia. It’s become our little tradition, a comforting start to the day with their delicious pastries and strong Italian coffee. Sophie, ever the early bird, was already buzzing with excitement about our plans for the day. Andreas and I savored the moment, knowing we’d soon be back to the familiar routines of Bonn. The anticipation of returning home mingled with the tinge of sadness that always accompanies the end of a good trip.

Our first stop was Giardino Bardini. The climb up was a bit of a workout, but oh, was it worth it! The gardens themselves are a beautiful mix of English and Italian styles, with blooming flowers even in February – a testament to Florence's mild winter. We strolled through the wisteria pergola, imagining it in full bloom during the spring. Sophie, ever the photographer, found endless inspiration in the garden's statues and fountains. I couldn't help but think about my own little garden back in Bonn, and how I could incorporate some of the ideas I saw here. Andreas, meanwhile, was busy capturing the panoramic views of the city, the Duomo standing proudly against the skyline.

The beauty of Florence isn't just in its monuments, but in the way it invites you to slow down and appreciate the simple joys of life.

Next on our list was Piazzale Michelangelo. I had seen countless photos of this iconic spot, but nothing could have prepared me for the sheer grandeur of the view. The entire city of Florence was laid out before us, bathed in the soft winter light. It was the perfect spot for a family photo, and we spent a good half hour just taking it all in. Street performers added to the lively atmosphere, their music echoing across the piazza. Sophie bought a small watercolor painting from a local artist, a memento of our time here.

For lunch, we ventured to Osteria La Dolce Vita Firenze, a charming little trattoria tucked away on a side street. The name says it all – the sweet life! We shared a plate of their homemade pasta, rich with truffle oil, and a bottle of local Chianti. It was the perfect fuel for our afternoon adventure. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, the kind of place where you feel like you could linger for hours. Andreas, always the conversationalist, struck up a chat with the owner, who shared stories of his family and the history of the restaurant.

Our final cultural stop was Palazzo Vecchio. The sheer scale of the building is breathtaking, a testament to the power and wealth of the Medici family. We wandered through the opulent halls, marveling at the intricate frescoes and sculptures. Sophie was particularly fascinated by the Hall of Five Hundred, the largest and most impressive room in the palace. I found myself drawn to the stories of the Medici, their rise to power, and their patronage of the arts. Andreas, ever the history buff, regaled us with tales of political intrigue and artistic genius.

Before our final dinner, we made a stop at Boutique Nadine. Sophie had been eyeing a beautiful leather handbag all week, and I decided to surprise her with it as a little souvenir. Her face lit up when she opened the box, a moment I'll cherish forever. It's these little moments of joy that make traveling with family so special.

For our farewell dinner, we chose Ristorante Santa Elisabetta, a Michelin-starred restaurant located inside a historic tower. It was a splurge, but well worth it. The food was exquisite, each dish a work of art. The service was impeccable, and the atmosphere was romantic and elegant. We toasted to our Florentine adventure, to the memories we'd made, and to the adventures yet to come. As we savored our last bites of Tuscan cuisine, I couldn't help but feel a sense of contentment.

As I sit here now, writing this final blog post from our Hotel Costantini room, I'm filled with a mix of emotions. I'm sad to leave Florence, a city that has captured my heart with its beauty and charm. But I'm also excited to return home to Bonn, to my garden, and to the familiar comforts of home. This trip has been a reminder of the importance of family, of slowing down and appreciating the simple things, and of always seeking out new adventures.
