Naxos Beyond the Beaches

Today, I ventured into the heart of Naxos, leaving the sun-kissed beaches behind to explore its rugged interior. It was a day of contrasts, from the soothing sounds of cascading water to the silent whispers of ancient history etched in stone. I set out to discover the wilder side of this Cycladic gem, eager to uncover the secrets hidden within its valleys and mountains.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at 1926 Γεύσεις Νάξου - Naxos Restaurant. I savored a traditional Naxian omelet, made with local eggs and cheese, while overlooking the harbor. The restaurant's commitment to using only local ingredients is something I truly appreciate; it's a wonderful way to support the community and experience the authentic flavors of the island. Fueled up and ready for adventure, I set off towards my first destination: Routsouna's Waterfall.

The drive to Keramoti, the village closest to the waterfall, was scenic in itself. The October air was crisp and carried the scent of wild herbs and pine. As I wound my way through the hills, I couldn't help but reflect on how different this landscape was from the coastal scenes I'd grown accustomed to. It reminded me of hiking in the Odenwald forest back home in Heidelberg, a familiar comfort amidst the new and exciting.

Arriving in Keramoti, I parked my rental car and began the trek to Routsouna Waterfall. The trail, about 2 kilometers long, meandered along the Routsouna stream, leading me deeper into a small gorge. The path was well-marked but uneven, and I was glad I'd worn my comfortable walking shoes. The sound of rushing water grew louder with each step, building anticipation for the natural wonder that awaited.

The closer I got, the more vibrant the landscape became. Lush greenery blanketed the area, a stark contrast to the typical Cycladic scenery. Ferns clung to the rocks, and plane trees provided shade, creating a cool, inviting oasis. Finally, I reached the waterfall, a 20-meter cascade of water plunging into a small, natural pool.

The sight was truly breathtaking. I spent a long time simply admiring the scene, listening to the soothing sound of the water and feeling the cool mist on my skin. It was a welcome respite from the sun, and I couldn't resist dipping my toes into the refreshing pool. Although the water was a bit chilly, the experience was invigorating.

Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.

After leaving the falls, I was ready for lunch. I headed to Meze *2, a restaurant in Naxos Town known for its Greek and Mediterranean cuisine. I ordered a seafood salad and saganaki, both of which were delicious. The restaurant had a cool atmosphere and the staff was very friendly.

With renewed energy, I drove towards the Ancient Marble Quarries, eager to delve into Naxos' rich history. These quarries, located near Apollonas and in the Melanes region, were once a vital source of the island's renowned marble. As a translator with a passion for history, I was excited to see firsthand where so much of ancient Greek art and architecture originated.

I visited the quarry near Apollonas, where the colossal, unfinished Kouros of Apollonas still lies. The sheer size of the statue, over 10 meters long, was awe-inspiring. It was humbling to stand in the presence of this ancient relic, imagining the sculptors who had painstakingly carved it centuries ago. The Kouros, abandoned mid-creation, offered a tangible connection to the past, a silent testament to the ambition and artistry of the Naxian people.

Exploring the quarry, I noticed the marks from chisels and carved surfaces on the surrounding rocks, remnants of the ancient quarrying process. It was fascinating to see how the sculptors had extracted the marble, using wedges and other tools to shape the stone. The area was strewn with discarded marble, a reminder of the immense scale of the operation.

Standing there, surrounded by the echoes of the past, I felt a profound sense of connection to the ancient world. It was a reminder that Naxos is more than just a beautiful island; it's a place with a rich and fascinating history, a cradle of Cycladic civilization.

As the sun began to set, I drove back towards Naxos Town, my mind filled with the images and experiences of the day. I decided to treat myself to dinner at Yazoo Summer Bliss, a restaurant on Plaka Beach known for its Mediterranean dishes and beachfront setting. I savored a delicious meal of fresh seafood, enjoying the cool sea breeze and the sound of the waves. The service was excellent and the staff was friendly.

To cap off the evening, I headed to Swing Bar in Naxos Town. I ordered one of their molecular cocktails and enjoyed the music and the view of the Old Castle of Naxos. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and discovery.

Reflecting on my adventures, I realized that Naxos has so much more to offer than just its beaches. The island's interior is a treasure trove of natural beauty and ancient history, waiting to be explored. Tomorrow, I plan to continue my journey of discovery, heading to Filoti and the Church of Saint George Diasoritis. I'm eager to see what other hidden gems Naxos has in store. Until then, I'll cherish the memories of today, the soothing sounds of Routsouna's Waterfall and the silent echoes of the Ancient Marble Quarries.

I am so grateful to be able to travel and experience these unique places. I am also grateful for Hans and Sofia, who support my dreams and passions from afar. I think of them often during my travels. I know Sofia would have loved to see the waterfall and Hans would have been fascinated by the marble quarries. Perhaps one day, we can all come back here together.

Before I turn in for the night, I must remember to find a power adapter. I realized today I forgot to pack one. I also need to find a reusable water bottle. It is important to stay hydrated, especially when hiking. I will try to find both of these items tomorrow while I am out exploring.
